What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Platform and employer size

Windows Server, Hyper-V and Veeam for a four-hospital system. A healthcare IT screener sees the stack and the scale of the environment in the headline, before the summary adds servers and staff.

  2. 2

A hypervisor exit with its savings

Four hundred twenty servers moved from VMware to Hyper-V in seven months with no unplanned clinical downtime, avoiding a six hundred ten thousand dollar renewal increase. Many IT teams faced this decision after VMware's pricing changed.

  3. 3

Immutable backups proven in a drill

Backups rebuilt on immutable Linux repositories with monthly restore tests, and ninety-five percent of tier-one systems back within four hours in the drill. It answers the ransomware question hiring managers ask first.

  4. 4

    Patch rings, before and after

Four rings through Configuration Manager and Ansible, lifting patch compliance within twenty-one days from eighty-one percent to ninety-eight. Monthly patch volume has grown, and a staged method is how administrators keep pace safely.

  5. 5

    Admin access locked down

Separate privileged accounts, multi-factor authentication and LAPS on every server, closing three audit findings. Identity attacks now target administrators directly, and this shows the candidate treats their own access as a risk.

  6. 6

    Automation measured in hours

Twenty-six recurring tasks scripted in PowerShell, saving about thirty hours a month. Postings ask for automation at every level above junior, and hours returned to the team is the plainest proof of it.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree comes first, then two years at a manufacturer sized in servers, shifts and employees. The bullets carry a patch cycle with its compliance rate, restore tests with a recovery time, provisioning scripted in PowerShell and an upgrade finished before extended support ran out.

Typical titles: Junior systems administrator, Systems administrator I, Associate systems administrator

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

A virtual estate replaces the patch list. The bullets carry a hypervisor move with the renewal it avoided, immutable backups proven in a drill, patch rings with compliance before and after, locked-down admin access and recurring work automated. The plant years keep two lines.

Typical titles: Systems administrator II, Windows systems administrator, Infrastructure administrator

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from servers to the people and plans behind them: four administrators and two data centers, a failover timed against its RTO, an operating system upgrade beaten to its deadline, standing admin rights removed and juniors mentored onto automation. Earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Senior systems administrator, Systems administrator III, Windows infrastructure engineer

04Summary

Weak

Experienced systems administrator skilled in Windows, Linux, Active Directory and virtualization, dedicated to maintaining high availability and supporting business operations.

Strong

Systems administrator with five years in manufacturing and healthcare, running 420 virtual servers and Microsoft 365 for a health system with 7,800 staff across 4 hospitals. Moved the virtual estate from VMware to Hyper-V, made backups immutable after a ransomware drill and keeps 98% of servers patched within 21 days.

The strong version sizes the estate, names the hypervisor move and the backup change, and gives patch compliance as a number. A hiring manager can ask how the migration avoided downtime. The weak one lists skills in the form hiring managers say means nothing, with no system to point at.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for server maintenance, backups and patching in a Windows and Linux environment.

Strong

  • Standardized patching into 4 rings with Configuration Manager and Ansible, keeping 98% of servers patched within 21 days, up from 81%.

It names the method, the tools and the compliance rate before and after, measured against a deadline. Monthly patch volume has climbed sharply, and employers want administrators who keep up without breaking production. The weak bullet lists three duties and gives no sign that any of them went well, how many servers were involved or how often the work was done.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Skills claimed without saying what you did

Fix: A hiring manager on a sysadmin forum put it bluntly: skilled in Active Directory means nothing. Spell out the work instead, such as the forest you ran, the Group Policy you rebuilt, the accounts you provisioned by script and how many users depended on it.

  2. Uptime percentages with nothing behind them

Fix: Example resumes promise ninety-nine point nine percent uptime and forty percent faster servers with no method or baseline. Employers now want proof, such as a restore test inside a recovery target or patch compliance within a set number of days. Give the measure your team actually tracked.

  3. Backups listed but never restored

Fix: Recent industry surveys find most organizations confident in their backups, while far fewer recover all their data after an attack. A line saying you managed backups says little. Say how often you tested restores, how long recovery took against the target and whether the copies were immutable.

  4. A title bigger than the job

Fix: Practitioners who hire warn that a self-made or inflated title can do more harm than good, especially a specialist label on generalist work. Use your real title, then let the bullets show the scope, such as servers, sites and users, and the escalations you owned.

  5. Network and systems work blurred together

Fix: Larger employers split the jobs: systems administrators run servers, identity and backups, while network teams own switches and firewalls. If you did both in a small shop, say so plainly, then lead with the side the posting asks for rather than listing every device you touched.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills and certifications. Put the platforms in the headline, then size the estate with servers, virtual machines, users and sites. Give patch compliance, restore times and recovery targets as plain text in the bullets. List certifications with dates, since several Microsoft and Red Hat exams changed recently. This example uses The Jake's template. Standard, Minimal Dark and Executive Classic hold the same content in one column.

09Questions systems administrators ask

Is systems administration a dying career?

It is shrinking slowly, not disappearing. The BLS projects employment of network and computer systems administrators to fall 4 percent from 2025 to 2035, as DevOps developers and outsourced network services absorb some tasks and administrators automate routine work. It still projects about 13,400 openings a year. Resumes that show automation, cloud identity and tested recovery read as the part of the job that is holding up.

Should a systems administrator learn to code?

Scripting, yes. In 2025 postings for the occupation, PowerShell appeared in 12 percent and Python in 11, and senior postings routinely list automation. You do not need to build applications. Show scripts and playbooks that replaced manual work, with the hours saved or the servers they now manage, and name the tool: PowerShell for Windows and Microsoft 365, Ansible or Bash for Linux.

Which certifications help a systems administrator most?

The ones for the platforms you run. CareerOneStop lists 219 certifications from 43 organizations for the occupation, with Microsoft's Azure Administrator and Red Hat's RHCSA among those flagged as in demand. Federal contractors often require Security+. Microsoft and Red Hat both reworked their server exams recently, so check that a certification is current before you study for it, and date each one on the resume.

Do I need a degree to become a systems administrator?

Not always. The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as typical, but when O*NET surveyed people in the occupation, 30 percent said an associate's degree was required and 27 percent a bachelor's. Many postings accept experience or certifications in place of a degree, often year for year. Without one, lead with experience and certifications, and show the size of the environments you have run.

How do I move from help desk to systems administrator?

Take the escalations. Sysadmin postings describe the role as the Tier 3 escalation point for the help desk, so volunteer for server, directory and backup tickets, then write them up with numbers. Build a home lab with a domain controller, a hypervisor and a backup job you actually restore. Put any script you wrote for real users near the top, with what it saved.
