What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Two engines and two duties

SQL Server and PostgreSQL, high availability and audit. A bank screener checks the engines and the regulated duties first, and the headline gives them before the reader reaches the summary.

  2. 2

    Estate count and size

One hundred forty databases and twenty-two terabytes across clusters and managed cloud. Public and private screeners both ask for the number and size of databases, because it sizes the job in one line.

  3. 3

    Recovery objective, before and after

Four hours down to fifteen minutes on core banking after the move to availability groups. A recovery time objective is the number the business signs off on, so it is the one a DBA should lead with.

  4. 4

    Tuning traced to query plans

Fourteen procedures rewritten from their plans and nine indexes added, with the response-time cut. Naming the method is what separates tuning experience from the claim every DBA resume already makes.

  5. 5

    Audits passed with automation

Two SOX audits with zero database findings, backed by quarterly access reviews for twelve hundred accounts. Banks hire DBAs partly to pass audits, and this shows the controls were built rather than documented.

  6. 6

    Migration with downtime stated

Thirty-six databases to managed cloud over three weekends, each under twenty minutes down. Stating the downtime is what makes a migration claim credible, because it is the part the business remembers.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree sits first, then two years of supervised operations written as results: a database count and alert tickets, backup checks automated, a real restore timed against its target and a patch record. The student help desk job stays because the SQL behind its reports is database work.

Typical titles: Database administrator I, Junior database administrator, Database analyst

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

Ownership of an estate replaces supervised work. The bullets give the database count and size, a recovery time objective with its before and after, a tuning result traced to query plans, audits passed with the automation behind them and a cloud migration with its downtime. The utility years keep two lines.

Typical titles: Database administrator, Database administrator II, Database engineer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from an estate to a team and a platform decision: three DBAs, four hundred twenty databases, a cloud migration priced in retired cost, restore testing made routine and proved in a ransomware exercise, and patching automated across the fleet. Two earlier employers shrink to one line each.

Typical titles: Senior database administrator, Database reliability engineer, Database administration manager

04Summary

Weak

Detail-oriented database administrator with extensive experience managing, optimizing and securing databases to ensure high availability and peak performance for mission-critical systems.

Strong

Database administrator with six years in utilities and banking, owning 140 SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases (22 TB) at a regional bank with $9B in assets. Rebuilt high availability on Always On, cut the recovery time objective from 4 hours to 15 minutes and cleared two SOX audits with no database findings.

The strong version gives the platforms, the database count and size, the setting, a recovery target with its before and after, and an audit result. A hiring manager can ask how the availability groups were built or what the auditors checked. The weak one claims availability and performance without a single number behind either.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Performed daily database backups and monitored database performance to ensure system reliability.

Strong

  • Tested the first full restore of the billing database to a standby server, recovering 380 GB in 2 hours against a 4-hour target.

A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a recovery plan. The strong bullet names the system, the size, the time it took and the target it was measured against, which is exactly what a screener asks a DBA to prove. The weak one lists a daily duty that every DBA performs.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Every SQL Server feature in one list

Fix: A well-known SQL Server trainer suggests dividing the weeks you were employed by the features you list. Fifty features in one year means none of them are known well. Name the few you ran in production and put one result beside each.

  2. Backups taken, restores never mentioned

Fix: Public-sector DBA screening questions ask for a recovery you personally performed and how you checked it. Write the restore: the database, its size, the time it took and the target it had to beat. A backup schedule alone proves nothing.

  3. No count or size for the estate

Fix: Screeners ask for the number and size of the databases you ran, because it sizes the job in one line. Give instances, databases and terabytes, and the versions you supported. Without them a reader cannot tell a two-database shop from a two-hundred-database one.

  4. Tuning claimed without the method

Fix: Performance tuning is on every DBA resume, so the claim alone carries no weight. Name the system, the tool you used to find the problem, such as query plans or wait statistics, the fix and the before and after. That is the interview answer written down.

  5. On-call and audits left out

Fix: Postings for banks, hospitals and government name on-call rotations, change windows and audit duties again and again. If you carried a pager, passed a SOX or HIPAA audit or remediated security findings, say so with the count. It is often the tiebreaker.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills and certifications. Put the platforms and versions in the headline, because screeners match those first, and keep database counts, sizes and recovery times as text in the bullets. Name the employers plainly, since public employers verify experience claims. This example uses The Jake's template. Standard, Executive Classic and Warm Classic hold the same content in one column.

09Questions database administrators ask

Is database administration a dying job?

It is changing more than it is disappearing. BLS projects no change in the number of database administrator jobs from 2025 to 2035 and explains that cloud platforms let fewer administrators serve more companies. Database architects are projected to grow 9 percent over the same years. Banks, hospitals and government still hire DBAs by that title. Show automation, cloud platforms and recovery work to stay on the growing side.

Which DBA certification is worth listing?

The one that matches the platform in the posting. CareerOneStop lists 198 certifications for the occupation, and Microsoft's Azure Database Administrator Associate is tagged in demand among them. Federal and defense postings may also require a security certification such as Security+ under DoD rules. Practitioners who hire DBAs call certifications icing rather than cake, so never let one stand in for a restore or a migration you actually ran.

Should a SQL Server DBA learn PostgreSQL?

Yes, if you want more of the postings. In 2025 job postings for the occupation, PostgreSQL appeared in 11 percent and Microsoft SQL Server in 9 percent, and many employers now run both. Put PostgreSQL on the resume only after you have run it somewhere real, such as a migration, a replica or a managed instance, and say what you did with it.

What is the difference between a DBA and a database reliability engineer?

Mostly the employer. Technology companies call the senior version a database reliability engineer and expect automation in code, infrastructure as code and deep internals knowledge for one or two engines. Banks, hospitals and government keep the DBA title and weight recovery, audit and change control. Write the resume for the title in the posting, and move the matching work to the top of each role.

How do I get my first DBA job?

Usually from next door. Practitioners describe the common route as developer or systems administrator work close to the database, becoming the accidental DBA and then taking the title. Entry postings in government ask for supervised operations work, so show backups you verified, patches you applied, tickets you closed and the SQL you wrote, each with a number. Ask to shadow the DBA on call while you are still in the neighboring role.
