What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Sites and vendors up front

Network administrator II with SD-WAN, Palo Alto and Cisco across thirty-four sites. A utility or multi-site employer reads scale and platform in one line before the summary adds pump stations and plant systems.

  2. 2

    Circuits retired, savings counted

SD-WAN to thirty-four sites on two circuits each, retiring nine MPLS lines and saving one hundred eighty-six thousand dollars a year. WAN work reads best with the circuits it replaced and what they cost.

  3. 3

    Plant systems segmented

Twenty-six zone rules separating one hundred forty SCADA devices from the business network, with a clean utility audit. Segmenting operational technology is where network and security work meet, and utilities hire for exactly this.

  4. 4

    An exploited flaw closed fast

Twelve firewalls fixed within thirty-six hours of an advisory, through a staged upgrade with rollback. Emergency directives now set patch deadlines in days for edge devices, and this bullet shows the candidate can meet one safely.

  5. 5

    Access control on every port

802.1X with Cisco ISE on twenty-six hundred wired ports, blocking unknown devices at every site. Network access control appears in mid-level postings and shows the administrator owns security controls, not just connectivity.

  6. 6

    CCNA and a firewall credential

The CCNA and Palo Alto's security administrator credential, each with its date. Postings often require a networking certification, and the firewall credential matches the platform the bullets describe.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree and CCNA come first, then two years on a college network team sized in ports, VLANs and access points. Each bullet shows work done inside change control: switch changes without rollbacks, a survey-led Wi-Fi install, firewall rules cleaned up and an outage traced to its cause.

Typical titles: Network administrator I, Network technician, Junior network engineer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

A multi-site network replaces the campus. The bullets carry an SD-WAN rollout with the circuits it retired, plant systems segmented behind firewalls, outage recovery cut through monitoring, an exploited flaw closed within hours and network access control on every wired port.

Typical titles: Network administrator II, Network engineer I, Network and security administrator

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from sites to standards: three administrators and sixty-five facilities, a Wi-Fi 7 refresh held to a roaming target, configuration checks that cut outages, end-of-support gear removed and a design standard that speeds every new clinic. Earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Senior network administrator, Lead network administrator, Senior network engineer

04Summary

Weak

Motivated network administrator with hands-on experience in LAN/WAN, routing, switching, firewalls and wireless, committed to network security and high availability.

Strong

Network administrator with five years in higher education and utilities, running the network for a water district's 34 sites, from headquarters to pump stations. Brought SD-WAN to every site, segmented plant control systems behind Palo Alto firewalls and cut average outage recovery from 3 hours to 50 minutes.

The strong version gives the site count, the WAN change, the security work and a recovery time with its baseline. A hiring manager can ask how the circuits were chosen or what the firewall zones separate. The weak one lists the topics of a certification exam and nothing the candidate actually ran.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Maintained firewalls and applied security patches to network devices as needed.

Strong

  • Remediated an actively exploited firewall flaw on all 12 Palo Alto firewalls within 36 hours of the advisory, using a staged upgrade with rollback.

Edge devices are now a common way into networks, and emergency advisories arrive with deadlines measured in days. This bullet gives the device count, the time to fix and the method that kept the upgrade safe. The weak one says patches happened as needed, which is the phrase that worries a security reviewer most, because it hides how long each device stayed exposed.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Platforms listed that you only touched once

Fix: Network engineers who interview candidates say most of their questions come from the resume: which system, how you used it and what your role was. Name the vendors and platforms you configured yourself, and say whether you built, ran or only used each one.

  2. Outage and recovery numbers with no size

Fix: A hiring manager on an IT forum noted that a recovery time means nothing without the size of what was recovered. Put the scope next to every number, such as sites, switches, access points or users, so a reader can tell a wiring closet from a campus.

  3. Written like a ticket taker, not an owner

Fix: Reviewers of network resumes say many read like an employee doing tasks rather than someone who owns the environment. Show the decisions you made, such as a segmentation design, a circuit choice or a change standard, and what happened after each one.

  4. Exam topics in place of experience

Fix: Lists of protocols copied from a certification outline tell a hiring manager what you studied, not what you ran. Keep OSPF, BGP or 802.1X on the page only where a bullet shows them in use, and move lab-only work to a clearly labeled project.

  5. A resume sent where an application is required

Fix: Many city, county and state employers state that a resume will not replace the application's experience sections. Copy your dates, device counts and duties into those fields in full, or a screener scoring the form will mark the experience as missing.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills and certifications. Put the vendors and the scale in the headline. Size each role with sites, ports, access points, firewalls and circuits, and give recovery times and change results as plain text. Date certifications, since CCNA and CCNP each last three years. Government applicants should also copy the same details into the application form. This example uses The Jake's template. Standard, Minimal Dark and Executive Classic hold the same content in one column.

09Questions network administrators ask

Is the CCNA still worth it in 2026?

For network-heavy roles, yes. CareerOneStop flags both the CCNA and the CCNP as in demand for network and computer systems administrators, and many public-sector postings require a networking certification at hire or within months of starting. Practitioners add that a certification opens interviews while experience wins the job, so pair it with lab work or with real changes you made on a production network.

What is the difference between a network administrator and a network engineer?

Mostly scope, and the titles overlap. O*NET lists Network Engineer among the sample titles for network and computer systems administrators, and some employers call the same job by either name. Postings for engineers add design work, equipment lists and standards. Network architects, a separate occupation, earned a $134,050 median in May 2025 against $99,130 for administrators. Match your headline to the posting.

Is network administration disappearing because of the cloud?

It is changing more than disappearing. The BLS projects employment to fall 4 percent from 2025 to 2035, partly as organizations buy Networks-as-a-Service, yet every hybrid network still needs someone to run circuits, firewalls, wireless and cloud connections. Resumes that show SD-WAN, cloud links, automation and security work read as the version of the job that employers still hire for today.

Do network administrators need to learn Python?

Increasingly. Python appeared in 11 percent of 2025 postings for the occupation and Ansible in 7 percent, and senior network postings name configuration compliance and automation directly. You do not need to be a developer. Show one script or playbook that backs up configurations, checks them for drift or pushes a standard change, with the number of devices it covers.

How do I move from help desk into networking?

Take every network ticket you can, then count them. Port activations, VPN access and Wi-Fi problems are the network work a help desk sees first. Build a lab in Packet Tracer or Cisco Modeling Labs for routing practice, and earn the CCNA. Put the ticket share, the lab and the certification on the resume, and apply for technician or administrator I roles.
