What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Level, estate and specialties

Desktop support technician II, Windows 11, Intune and classroom AV across twenty-six schools. A school district screener sees the tier, the platform and the size of the estate in the first line.

  2. 2

An upgrade beaten to the deadline

Fourteen hundred fifty laptops moved to Windows 11 through Intune and Autopilot before Windows 10 support ended, with four custom images retired. It names the end-of-support deadline every IT team faced and the tooling used to meet it.

  3. 3

    Tickets held to an SLA

Eleven hundred Tier 2 tickets a year with ninety-four percent inside a two-business-day SLA. Postings measure support work by service levels more than by ticket counts, and this bullet gives both.

  4. 4

    Onboarding scripted, weeks to days

PowerShell creates accounts, groups, multi-factor authentication and licenses for four hundred twenty August hires in three days instead of two weeks. Scripting is the skill that moves a technician from Tier 2 toward systems work.

  5. 5

    Refresh judged on day one

Twenty-two thousand student Chromebooks refreshed over the summer, with devices still in repair on the first day of school cut from six hundred forty to ninety. It measures the work by what teachers noticed.

  6. 6

    Classroom AV on one standard

One hundred eighty rooms on a single AV kit with a one-page guide, and AV tickets down thirty-seven percent. Classroom and meeting-room technology shows up in many support postings and on few resumes.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The associate degree and A+ come first, then a Tier 1 desk sized in contacts a day and first contact resolution. Each bullet names a support object: resets with identity checks, knowledge articles with the repeat tickets they removed, and laptops ready on day one. The home lab shows a domain built by hand.

Typical titles: Service desk analyst I, Help desk technician, IT support specialist

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

Tier 2 scope replaces the phone queue. The bullets carry a Windows 11 upgrade finished before support ended, tickets closed inside the SLA, onboarding automated in PowerShell, a Chromebook refresh measured on the first day of school and classroom AV standardized. The hospital years keep two lines.

Typical titles: Desktop support technician II, IT support specialist II, Field services technician

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from tickets to the desk itself: fifteen people across forty-eight branches, SLA compliance raised through queue discipline, identity checks added after a peer breach, self-service that removed tickets and new analysts trained faster. Earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: IT service desk supervisor, Service desk lead, Senior IT support specialist

04Summary

Weak

Detail-oriented IT support specialist with strong troubleshooting skills and a passion for helping users resolve hardware, software and network issues in a fast-paced environment.

Strong

IT support specialist with five years across a hospital service desk and K-12 desktop support, now a Tier 2 technician for 26 schools and 3,100 staff. Upgraded 1,450 staff laptops to Windows 11 with Intune and Autopilot before Windows 10 support ended, and keeps 94% of tickets inside SLA.

The strong version names the tier, the size of the estate, an upgrade finished before a hard deadline and the service level the tickets were held to. A hiring manager can ask how Autopilot replaced the images. The weak one describes every help desk applicant and gives the reader nothing to check.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for answering calls and resolving tickets for end users in a timely manner.

Strong

  • Completed 1,900 password and MFA resets with a callback identity check, passing all 4 quarterly security audits of the reset process.

It counts the work, names the control that makes resets safe and shows an auditor checked it. Help desks now verify identity before a reset because attackers call in posing as staff, so a reader sees a Tier 1 analyst who can be trusted with accounts. The weak bullet repeats the job title and shows nothing done in it.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Bullets copied from the job posting

Fix: Help desk hiring managers describe resumes written to mirror their own ad, followed by candidates who could not do the work at the test bench. Keep a posting's tool names only where you used them, and back each one with a ticket count, a device count or a result.

  2. A wall of products used once

Fix: Hiring managers on IT forums say they would rather see a few tools known well than a list of everything touched. Group the tools you use every week: the ticket system, the directory, the endpoint manager. Leave out languages and platforms you could not defend in an interview.

  3. Resolution rates no desk would believe

Fix: Example resumes online claim first-call resolution above ninety-five percent, far past the targets industry benchmarks set, so the number reads as invented. Report the rate your desk actually tracked, next to the desk's own target, and say which channel it covers.

  4. Experience stated larger than it was

Fix: Interviewers check. One hiring manager found two years of configuration management work that turned out to be an apprenticeship, another a certification that was still being studied for. Label trainee and part-time work honestly, and list a certification only once it is earned.

  5. Troubleshooting shown only as outcomes

Fix: Hiring managers test help desk candidates on method, and some reject anyone who shuts a broken machine down and calls it solved. On the resume, show how you worked a problem, such as the pattern you found in repeat tickets and the article that ended them.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills and certifications. Put the tier or level and the ticket tool in the headline. Size the work with users, devices, sites and tickets, and report service levels the way the desk measured them. List current certifications with dates, since both A+ and ITIL need renewal. 09Questions IT support specialists ask

Do I need a degree to get an IT support job?

Often not. The BLS says user support specialists typically complete some college courses, but a high school diploma plus relevant IT certifications can qualify, and large software companies may ask for a bachelor's. O*NET places the job in Job Zone Three, where most workers have vocational training, related experience or an associate's degree. Without a degree, put the certification and a hands-on lab near the top.

Is CompTIA A+ still worth getting?

For a first help desk job, usually yes. Entry postings list it as preferred, and some city employers accept it in place of a year of college. CareerOneStop's list for the occupation leans toward ITIL and HDI credentials, and defense contractors ask for Security+. Hiring managers add that a certification without hands-on work carries little weight, so pair it with a lab or a support job.

Will AI chatbots replace help desk jobs?

Fewer routine tickets will reach people. The BLS projects computer user support employment to fall 3 percent from 2025 to 2035 because organizations use chatbots for troubleshooting, though openings continue as people leave the field. Show the work automation hands back to humans: escalations, device rollouts, identity checks and the knowledge articles that feed self-service. If you review or tune AI answers, say so with a number.

How do I move from help desk into systems administration?

Take on Tier 2 and Tier 3 work where you are, then show it. Postings for senior support roles ask for PowerShell, Group Policy, endpoint management and software packaging, and the BLS lists network and systems administrators among the usual next steps. Put a script you wrote with the hours it saved, an Intune or Group Policy change you owned, and a home lab domain if your job gives you none.

Can I find a remote IT support job?

Some, but most support roles are on site. The BLS notes that some specialists telework while others must be on site or travel to clients, and many postings require lifting equipment, a driver's license and time between locations. Remote roles cluster at managed service providers and phone-based desks. For one of those, show chat and remote-control volume, written knowledge articles and tickets resolved without a site visit.
