QA engineer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three QA engineer resumes at junior, mid and senior level, rendered in a real template and annotated. Each names the test stack and shows quality as results a team can measure: escaped defects, suite speed, flaky failures and release time.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Automation scope in the headline

QA automation engineer, Playwright, API and payments testing in CI. The headline tells a fintech screener the level of ownership, the stack and the domain in one line, before the summary adds scale.

  2. 2

A merge gate with its runtime

Twelve hundred fifty UI and API tests gate every merge and finish in fourteen minutes. A suite that fast is one developers keep, and naming the runtime shows the candidate designed for it.

  3. 3

    Flakiness fixed at the cause

Flaky failures cut from seven percent of runs to under one by fixing data isolation and waits. Flaky tests erode trust in automation, and naming the causes shows real debugging rather than retries.

  4. 4

    Escaped defects, before and after

Escaped defects down seventy-one percent through risk-based sprint plans and contract tests between payment services. It is the outcome a quality lead is judged on, with the two methods that produced it.

  5. 5

    Load tests tied to failures

Load tests at three times peak volume caught a connection-pool limit that would have failed twenty-four hundred payments an hour. Performance work reads best as the failure it prevented.

  6. 6

    Manual testers moved into automation

Three manual testers mentored into automation, each now owning a suite of more than one hundred fifty tests. Mid-level QA roles often include growing the team's skills, and this counts the result.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree comes first, then two years testing a property management platform. The bullets carry automation with the manual time it removed, API tests running on every pull request, an exploratory session that caught a payment bug and bug reports developers could act on. The accessibility audit adds a project.

Typical titles: QA engineer I, Software test engineer, QA analyst

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

Ownership of the automation replaces individual suites. The bullets carry a framework that gates every merge with its runtime, flaky failures cut below one percent, escaped defects reduced with contract tests, a load test that found a limit before peak and manual testers moved into automation.

Typical titles: QA automation engineer, Software development engineer in test, QA engineer II

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from suites to quality strategy in a regulated product: six teams, verification cut from weeks to days with traceable tests, AI-generated tests kept under human review, an evaluation set for an AI feature and accessibility issues closed before procurement. Earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Senior QA engineer, QA lead, Principal software engineer in test

04Summary

Weak

Detail-oriented QA engineer with a passion for quality, experienced in manual and automated testing, writing test cases and working in Agile teams to deliver bug-free software.

Strong

QA engineer with five years in property and payments software, now owning test automation for a payments platform that processes $3.2B a year for 18,000 merchants. Built the Playwright and API suites that gate every merge, cut flaky failures below 1% and brought escaped defects down from 14 a quarter to 4.

The strong version names the product's scale, the suites that gate merges and two measures a quality lead tracks, flaky failures and escaped defects, with the change over time. A hiring manager can ask how the flakiness was fixed. The weak one promises bug-free software, which no tester can deliver or prove.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Wrote and executed test cases and logged bugs in Jira.

Strong

  • Reduced flaky test failures from 7% of runs to under 1% by fixing test data isolation, replacing fixed waits and quarantining with an owner and a deadline.

Flaky tests are the reason teams stop trusting automation, and this bullet shows the causes fixed, not only the rate. A hiring manager for an automation role will ask about waits and test data, and the candidate has already answered. The weak bullet is the task list hiring managers say they throw away.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. A list of tasks every tester does

Fix: A test consultancy owner who reviews hundreds of applications says CVs with twenty bullets like wrote test cases, executed test cases and logged bugs go straight to the reject pile. Keep four or five bullets per role, each with a result a developer or manager would notice.

  2. Bug counts presented as achievements

Fix: Testers who hire warn against leading with the number of bugs raised, because it rewards noise. Show what the testing changed instead: escaped defects before and after, a critical bug caught before launch, reopened tickets cut or a release that went out on time.

  3. What you did, without saying why

Fix: One hiring manager who read more than two hundred QA automation resumes said a list of actions interested him less than the reason behind them or what they accomplished. For each suite or framework, name the risk it covered and the result it produced.

  4. Manual testing listed as a skill

Fix: Practitioners who screen QA CVs flag manual testing on its own as a weak line. Name the techniques instead, such as exploratory sessions, risk-based test plans, boundary and negative cases and accessibility checks. They show the thinking behind manual work that automation cannot replace.

  5. Certification logos in place of evidence

Fix: Some testers who hire reject a CV with a certification logo in the header, and others treat a foundation certificate as a basic filter. List ISTQB or similar with its level and date in the certifications section, and let the bullets carry the evidence of skill.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills and certifications. Put the test stack in the headline: the automation framework, the language and the kinds of testing you own. Give suite size, runtime, flaky rate and escaped defects as numbers, and name the regulation if the product has one. This example uses The Jake's template. Standard, Minimal Dark and Executive Classic hold the same content in one column.

09Questions QA engineers ask

Is manual QA testing dying?

Manual work is shrinking as a job on its own, not disappearing. The BLS projects QA analyst and tester jobs to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, and postings increasingly pair exploratory and risk-based testing with automation. Keep the manual skills that find real bugs, show them with results, and add at least one automated suite you built and maintain.

Should I learn Playwright, Cypress or Selenium?

Learn one well and know why teams pick the others. Selenium still appeared in 22 percent of 2025 postings for the occupation, while O*NET flags Playwright as in demand at 5 percent, and newer web teams lean toward it. Large enterprises keep long-running Selenium suites, so both appear in postings. Put the framework you have shipped tests with first on the resume.

Is ISTQB certification worth it?

Often as a filter, rarely as a deciding factor. CareerOneStop lists 118 certifications from 23 organizations for the occupation, including the ISTQB Foundation and Advanced levels offered through ASTQB, and some postings name ISTQB as desired. Testers who hire disagree about its value, so list it once with its level and date, and let the bullets on your resume prove the skill.

What is the difference between a QA engineer and an SDET?

Mostly how much code the job asks for. QA analysts and engineers own test plans, exploratory testing and automation of the product's main paths. SDET postings read like developer roles, asking for framework design, mocks, pipelines and programming experience. O*NET lists QA Engineer and Automation Tester among the occupation's titles but not SDET. Match the posting's title, then show the code you wrote.

Will AI replace QA engineers?

It is changing how tests get written. Test tools now include agents that plan, generate and repair tests, and postings have started asking for AI-assisted test generation and for testing AI features themselves. Someone still decides what matters, reviews generated tests and judges model output. Show that work on the resume: tests you reviewed, evaluation sets you built and what they caught.
