What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Domain and architecture up front

Online banking, React, TypeScript and micro-frontends. A bank screener sees the regulated domain and the architecture in one line, which is what separates this candidate from a marketing-site developer.

  2. 2

    Two flows, one owner

Transfers and bill pay for one point four million customers, from design review to on-call. Ownership of a flow end to end is the mid-level expectation, and the customer count sizes the risk.

  3. 3

    INP with the technique named

Interaction latency from four hundred sixty milliseconds to one hundred fifty at p75, by moving validation off the main thread and virtualizing a list. The method is the part an interviewer will probe.

  4. 4

    Visual regression that caught changes

Screenshot tests on one hundred forty components, catching sixty unintended changes before release. It shows a testing strategy chosen for a component-heavy frontend, with a count that proves it earns its keep.

  5. 5

    Error states that cut contacts

Failed-transfer screens rewritten around support's top ten reasons, and contacts fell twenty-eight percent. It ties interface work to an operational cost a bank tracks closely.

  6. 6

    Field service years, two lines

The dispatch board and the library consolidation stay, each with its number. They show where the component habits started without taking space from the banking work this reader is hiring for.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree and a merged open-source contribution frame two years on one application screen. The bullets give the users it serves, a library migration counted in deleted code, a test suite with its effect on escaped bugs and an accessibility audit closed out. The internship keeps one line.

Typical titles: Software engineer I, frontend, Frontend engineer, Front end developer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

Ownership of two flows replaces one screen. The bullets carry interaction latency with its method, a framework migration measured in release lead time, visual regression tests with what they caught and support contacts reduced by better error states. The field service years keep two lines.

Typical titles: Frontend engineer, Senior frontend engineer, Front end software engineer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from flows to an architecture: fourteen teams and seventy engineers, a component API with adoption measured before and after, performance budgets enforced in CI, a build migration timed in seconds and code review at volume. Two earlier employers keep one line each.

Typical titles: Staff frontend engineer, Principal frontend engineer, Design engineer

04Summary

Weak

Creative front end developer with a passion for crafting beautiful, pixel-perfect and responsive user interfaces using the latest JavaScript frameworks.

Strong

Frontend engineer with five years in field service and banking software, owning the transfers and bill pay screens of an online banking app used by 1.4M customers. Split the app into micro-frontends, cut transfer interaction latency from 460 ms to 150 ms and brought both flows to WCAG 2.2 AA.

The strong version names the flows owned, the customer count, an architecture change, a latency number with its baseline and an accessibility standard met. A hiring manager can ask how the latency was measured or how the micro-frontends share state. The weak one promises beauty and pixels, which the interview will not test.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Developed responsive and reusable UI components with React and optimized application performance.

Strong

  • Cut interaction latency (INP) on transfers from 460 ms to 150 ms at p75 by moving validation off the main thread and virtualizing the payee list.

It names the metric, the percentile and the two techniques, which shows an engineer who understands the browser rather than one who reached for a library. Interaction latency is the responsiveness measure Google now reports for real users, so a hiring manager recognizes it at once. The weak line claims optimization without a number or a method.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. A resume laid out in a design tool

Fix: Hiring guides written by senior front end engineers note that recruiters judge a front end candidate's resume as a piece of design, and that files exported from design software often parse badly. Use a clean one-column layout and let spacing and hierarchy show the care.

  2. Utility libraries listed beside frameworks

Fix: A skills line that mixes React with a date library and an HTTP client reads as padding. Keep one or two entries per category at the level of frameworks, languages and test runners, and let the bullets show the smaller tools in context.

  3. Nothing about state, data or the browser

Fix: Practitioners call it the backend of the frontend: state management, caching, optimistic updates and how the browser renders. Postings for senior roles ask for it directly. Give one bullet to a hard client-side problem and how you solved it.

  4. Tests mentioned, strategy missing

Fix: Most front end postings mention testing, and several ask who defines the testing strategy. Say which layers you cover, unit, integration, end to end or visual regression, which tools you use and what happened to escaped bugs afterwards.

  5. Team features with no part named

Fix: Design engineering postings now ask to see what you personally identified, built, shipped and learned after launch. On a shared component library or a team feature, say which piece was yours and what it changed, or the reader credits the team.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, projects, education, skills. Put the framework and TypeScript in the headline and keep latency, adoption and test numbers as text in the bullets. Link a portfolio or repository only when it shows production-quality work. Recruiters read a front end resume's own layout as a sample of the craft, so keep it clean. This example uses The Jake's template. Standard, Minimal Dark and Executive Classic hold the same content in one column.

09Questions front end developers ask

Is there a career ceiling for front end developers?

Not at companies that treat the frontend as engineering. Current postings include staff frontend engineer roles that govern design systems, set performance budgets and lead architecture migrations across many teams. The ceiling people describe comes from roles limited to building screens from mockups. To climb, take on work other teams depend on, such as a shared library, a build system or a testing strategy.

Do I need backend skills to get hired as a front end developer?

Some, not a second career. Many front end postings ask for familiarity with APIs and data, and some expect you to own a backend-for-frontend layer. Show that you can shape the data your interface needs and handle loading, errors and caching well. If a posting asks for services, queues and databases, it is a full stack role and needs that resume instead.

React, Vue or Angular: which should my resume lead with?

The one you have shipped the most in production, named in the headline. In 2025 postings for web developers, React appeared in 35 percent, Angular in 18 percent and Vue.js in 9 percent. If the target employer uses a different framework, lead with the problem you solved and show the framework you know second. Hiring managers care more about the browser fundamentals underneath.

What is a design engineer, and should I apply for those roles?

It is a front end role with design ownership, and the title is spreading at product-led companies. Those postings ask for a portfolio of shipped interface work, often including animation and marketing pages, and expect you to move from a design file to production code yourself. Apply if you already make design decisions rather than only implementing them, and show those decisions.

Which front end certifications are worth listing?

Few employers ask for any. CareerOneStop lists 49 certifications for web developers, including Pearson's HTML and CSS and JavaScript exams and CIW's JavaScript Specialist. Accessibility credentials from IAAP carry weight where accessibility is regulated. Government contractors may require Security+ for cleared roles. List a certification only when the posting names it, and below your shipped work, because the interview will test the work rather than the exam.
