Web developer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three web developer resumes at first-year, five-year and lead level, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each reads the way an engineering manager reads: sites shipped, performance scores, conversion moved, accessibility audits passed, and the stack shown at work.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

Storefront, stack and the two metrics

Web developer, e-commerce, Next.js and Shopify, five years, Core Web Vitals and accessibility named. The headline says which kind of web work and which two measures the developer is judged on, before the summary starts.

  2. 2

    Revenue, conversion and vitals first

A $14 million storefront rebuilt headless, checkout conversion up 24%, all Core Web Vitals passing on mobile, 38 sites shipped with WCAG 2.1 AA since 2022. The summary reads as the store owner's dashboard, not a skills list.

  3. 3

    Rebuild stated as conversion

A headless Next.js and TypeScript front end on Shopify, checkout conversion from 2.1% to 2.6% in six months. The architecture decision is tied to the number the business tracks, which is how a developer proves the rebuild paid.

  4. 4

    Vitals on real traffic

All three Core Web Vitals passing for 96% of page views, median Largest Contentful Paint from 3.4 seconds to 1.5, layout shift 0.02. Field data rather than a lab score, and the three figures Google reports by name.

  5. 5

    Design system sized and shared

Forty-six components in React with Storybook and Tailwind CSS, used on the storefront, the blog and three microsites by four developers. A component count with adopters is how a design system is measured.

  6. 6

    Tests measured by errors prevented

Checkout errors down 61% after 180 Playwright scenarios joined the release pipeline, running in under nine minutes on every pull request. The test suite is described by what it caught and what it costs, which is what a lead wants to know.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Experience leads because the first agency year produced numbers a lead can check: sites shipped with their platforms, Lighthouse before and after, block libraries with time saved, pull requests and rollbacks, a conversion lift on a client page. The campus web job reads as accessibility work, the project carries users and a score, and the degree closes the page.

Typical titles: Web developer, Junior front-end developer, WordPress developer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. A web developer's page in the units an e-commerce team tracks: revenue behind the storefront, checkout conversion, Core Web Vitals on real traffic, a design system with adopters, tests measured by errors prevented, organic traffic, developers mentored. The agency years keep two lines with their site count, and the cloud and accessibility credentials are dated below.

Typical titles: Front-end developer, Full-stack web developer, E-commerce developer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces site lists: a platform's site count, traffic and uptime, conformance reached and verified, page weight and paint cut with the methods, a design system with adopters, a migration with its savings. The retailer years keep two lines with a conversion result and a pipeline, the agency years keep the title, and the credentials are dated at the bottom.

Typical titles: Lead web developer, Senior front-end engineer, Web platform lead

04Summary

Weak

Passionate and detail-oriented web developer with strong skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and modern frameworks, eager to build responsive, user-friendly websites for a growing team.

Strong

Web developer with five years across a digital agency and an outdoor retailer: rebuilt a $14 million-a-year Shopify storefront as a headless Next.js and TypeScript front end with checkout conversion up 24%, all three Core Web Vitals passing on mobile, a 46-component design system in React and Storybook, 38 sites shipped with WCAG 2.1 AA on every launch since 2022.

Revenue behind the site, the stack named with the work it did, conversion and Core Web Vitals as results, a design system with its component count, and the accessibility record. Engineering managers say resumes that list frameworks tell them nothing, and the weak version is that list with adjectives.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Developed and maintained responsive websites using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React, collaborating with designers to deliver high-quality user experiences.

Strong

  • Brought all three Core Web Vitals to passing on mobile for 96% of page views, cutting median Largest Contentful Paint from 3.4 seconds to 1.5 and layout shift to 0.02.

The metrics Google publishes and every site owner watches, measured on real traffic, with before and after. The occupation's own tasks include evaluating code for validity and device compatibility and testing after every revision, and this line is that work with a result. The weak bullet is every bootcamp graduate's first line.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Frameworks listed, nothing they built

Fix: Hiring managers on developer forums say a resume that lists TypeScript, React, Next.js and AWS means nothing when the candidate cannot discuss them, and that they hire the person who explains trade-offs. Put every framework inside a bullet with the site, the metric and the decision it drove.

  2. No performance or accessibility numbers

Fix: Postings for university and agency roles require WCAG 2.1 and performance optimization by name, and the occupation's tasks include testing after every revision. Write the Lighthouse or Core Web Vitals before and after, the audit findings closed and the conformance level reached, per site.

  3. A portfolio link with no context on the page

Fix: The handbook says employers may accept projects in place of credentials, and practitioners who hire ask candidates to walk through their work and its decisions. Give the project a line with the stack, the users or traffic, and one measured outcome, then link it.

  4. Sites counted but never sized

Fix: Eleven sites means little without the platform, the traffic or the revenue behind them. Postings name WordPress, Drupal, Next.js and React specifically, so write the platform each site ran on, the monthly visitors or dollars it carried, and whether it launched on time.

  5. The CMS years hidden to look like an engineer

Fix: The occupation's posting data puts WordPress among its in-demand technologies, and agency postings ask for block editor, theme and plugin work by name. Say you shipped 27 client sites, with the platform, the build time and the audit results, rather than burying it under a framework.

08Format and template

Jake's Resume is the plain, dense layout engineering teams pass around: a header with the site link, a skills block grouped by kind, tight bullets with the stack inside them and room for one project. It survives every applicant tracking system and reads well in a pull-request-style skim, which is how developers and their managers actually read resumes. The same content moves into Standard, Minimal Dark or Executive Classic. Whichever you choose, the shipped sites, the metrics and the portfolio link stay on the first screen.

09Questions web developers ask

What numbers should a web developer put on a resume?

The ones a site owner or engineering manager already watches: sites or features shipped, Lighthouse scores and Core Web Vitals before and after, page load and bundle size, conversion or sign-up rate on pages you touched, accessibility findings closed and the conformance level reached, uptime, test scenarios and rollbacks, pull requests merged, and the users or traffic behind each site. The occupation's tasks include evaluating code for validity and compatibility and testing after every revision, so measured results are the natural evidence. A bullet with a framework and no number is a skills-list entry in disguise.

Do I need a degree to be hired as a web developer?

Not always. The handbook says education ranges from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree, that some employers prefer a computer science degree, and that developers may not need specific credentials if they can show ability through prior work or projects. Postings in 2026 split the same way: university and corporate roles list a bachelor's, agency roles list years with the platform and a degree or equivalent. Practitioners also report that the market has tightened and degrees are asked for more often. Whatever your route, lead with shipped work and its metrics, and give the project section real numbers.

Which technologies should a web developer list in 2026?

The ones you have shipped with, named where they did work. The occupation's own posting data puts JavaScript in nearly half of postings, React in about a third, CSS, HTML and AWS in roughly a quarter, TypeScript, Git, Python and SQL in about a fifth, and Node.js and Angular behind them, with WordPress, Vue.js and GraphQL flagged as in demand. Developer surveys in 2025 show the same stack, with Node.js, React and Next.js leading the frameworks professionals use. Group the skills block by languages, frameworks, tools and practices, and make sure each name appears in a bullet above it.

Should a web developer resume include a portfolio and GitHub link?

Yes, in the header and again as one project with numbers. Practitioners who hire say they would rather have a candidate present their work and explain the decisions than solve a puzzle on a whiteboard, and the handbook notes that projects can stand in for credentials. Link the portfolio and the repository, then give the project a line: the stack, the users or traffic it serves, one measured outcome such as a Lighthouse score or monthly visitors, and what you decided and why. A link alone is a promise, and a line with numbers is evidence.

How do I move from WordPress and agency work into a product or lead role?

Show the engineering underneath the sites. Agency postings ask for block editor development in React, standardized workflows, Git, containers and pattern libraries, and product postings ask for the same with tests, performance budgets and a component library. Write the starter theme that cut build time, the block library in React, the Playwright suite in the release pipeline, the Core Web Vitals you moved on a storefront and the developers you mentored. The five-year example is that resume, and the lead example shows where it goes next.

How long should a web developer resume be?

One page, including the lead developer with twelve years and three employers. Engineering managers skim, and one who hires reports that the messy resumes belonged to sharp candidates and the polished ones to weak ones, so length saves no one. Give the current role five bullets with metrics, earlier roles two lines, one project with numbers, a skills block grouped by kind, and the certifications dated. Older stacks and older agencies go into one line or off the page.
