What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Headline names the specialty

Payments and distributed systems tells a screener what to test for and which team to route the resume to. Software engineer alone matches every posting and none in particular.

  2. 2

    Summary leads with scale

Dollars cleared, transactions, uptime and one latency number, all in the first three lines. A hiring manager can picture the system before reading a bullet.

  3. 3

    Ownership stated as a service

Oversaw the settlement service, with its stack in parentheses, is the mid-level claim. It says what would break if this person left, which is what the level means.

  4. 4

    Before-and-after numbers on every change

840 ms to 210 ms, 31 pages to 9, 40% to 81% coverage. Each pair names the mechanism too, so the improvement reads as engineering rather than luck.

  5. 5

    Education cut to two lines

After six years of production services the degree stops being the story. School, degree and dates keep it for parsers that look for it and give the space back to the settlement work.

  6. 6

    One certification, dated

An AWS associate certification with an expiry date is a checkable fact that backs the infrastructure bullets above it. Listing three expired ones would say less than this one current one.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The three resumes are one person, shown as if he had graduated in 2025, 2020 and 2017. Education leads here, then the first job, the year-long internship and two projects that link to their code and carry adoption numbers. The headline stays plain until there is a specialty to name. Every bullet carries a unit: endpoints, coverage, minutes, stars.

Typical titles: Software engineer, Junior software engineer, Associate software engineer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline names a specialty. The summary carries the settlement service's scale and one before-and-after latency number. Each role opens with the service the person owned, then the changes they made to it, each with its mechanism and its measurement. Education drops to two lines.

Typical titles: Software engineer II, Senior software engineer, Backend engineer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces detail: team size, service count, patients served, dollars saved. Each bullet pairs a result with its method, from error budgets to a schema registry. The payments role keeps its two strongest numbers and the first role becomes one line, so nine years still fit on one sheet.

Typical titles: Staff software engineer, Principal software engineer, Engineering lead

04Summary

Weak

Passionate full-stack software engineer with strong problem-solving skills, seeking a challenging role at an innovative company where I can grow and make an impact.

Strong

Software engineer with six years building payment and reporting services in Go, TypeScript and PostgreSQL. Owns a settlement service that clears $1.4 billion a year at 99.98% uptime, and cut its p95 latency from 840 ms to 210 ms.

The stack, the domain and two numbers a hiring manager can picture. The weak version could open any software resume on earth and says nothing a screener can test.

Headline

Weak

Software Engineer

Strong

Software engineer, payments and distributed systems

Software engineer alone is the occupation, not the person. Adding payments and distributed systems tells a screener which interview loop to book and lets the resume surface on searches for either term.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining backend services, improving system performance and working with cross-functional teams to deliver features on time.

Strong

  • Cut p95 settlement latency from 840 ms to 210 ms on a service clearing 3.2 million transactions a year, by adding a Redis read-through cache and batching ledger writes in groups of 500.

A verb, a before-and-after measurement, and the mechanism. An interviewer can ask why 500, and the candidate can answer. The weak bullet describes the job title, could sit on any backend resume, and gives a screener nothing to check.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. A skills wall of 25 technologies, half of them touched once in a tutorial

Fix: List what you could be interviewed on this week, grouped by kind, and make sure each one also appears inside a bullet. A parser counts the list. A manager checks it against the work.

  2. Bullets that describe the job instead of the change

Fix: Developed features, maintained services and collaborated with stakeholders are the posting, not your work. Start with a verb, name what changed, and put the unit at the end: milliseconds, percent, dollars, users.

  3. No link to code for an entry-level candidate

Fix: With under two years of experience, a repository or a live project is the strongest evidence you have. Put the link in the header and give each project one line with its stack and a number people can check.

  4. Two columns with icons and skill-rating bars

Fix: A rating bar is an image to a parser and says nothing to a manager. A sidebar of tools can land above your first job in the text a recruiter searches. Use one column and plain headings, so the page reads in the order you chose.

  5. A senior resume that runs to three pages of every project since 2014

Fix: Keep the current role in full, give the previous role its two strongest numbers, and compress everything older to one line each. Scope and results are the case at this level, not the inventory.

08Format and template

Single column, standard headings, no photo, no skill bars. To a parser a rating bar is an image, and a sidebar can move your tools above your first job in the text a recruiter searches. One column keeps the order you chose, and a hiring manager reads that same order. This example uses The Jake's, a dense single-column template that fits six years of work on one page with room for a certification line. The same content works in Standard, Minimal Dark and Executive Classic, all single column. Keep the sections in the same order in any of them.

09Questions software engineers ask

Should a software engineer resume be one page?

One page through about ten years, and a second page only when there are systems to account for that would not fit: a staff or principal engineer with several platforms and teams. The mid-level example above holds six years, two employers and a certification on one page by keeping the older role to four bullets. If you are cutting, cut the oldest bullets first, never the numbers.

How do I list programming languages and frameworks?

Group them by kind (languages, frameworks, infrastructure, practices) and lead each group with what the posting names. Include only what you could be interviewed on now. Then make every item appear inside at least one bullet, next to a result. Python in the skills list and nowhere else is a keyword. Python in a bullet about a nightly pipeline that grew from 2 million to 190 million rows is experience.

Do I need a GitHub link on my resume?

Early in a career, yes: a repository with real commits is the best evidence you have, and the header is where a screener looks for it. Put the link beside your email. A personal site that lists your repositories works as well as a profile link, which is what the entry example's header does, and each project below it links straight to its code. After a few years of professional work the link matters less, and a portfolio of internal systems cannot be linked anyway.

How do I describe work that is under an NDA?

Describe the shape without the client. Give the scale in requests, users or data volume, the stack, your specific part, and the measurable outcome, the way the settlement bullets above give scale without naming a single merchant. Leave out product names and anything that identifies the customer. Interviewers expect this and will ask for detail in conversation, where you can judge what is safe to say.

Are certifications worth listing for a software engineer?

Cloud certifications such as the AWS solutions architect or the Kubernetes administrator credential are worth one dated line each. Amazon Web Services tooling sits on O*NET's list of the technologies employers post for most, and the senior example runs 60 services on Kubernetes, so both credentials back bullets on the page. No license exists for the occupation, so every certification is optional. List current ones with their expiry dates and leave out expired or entry-level certificates, which dilute the ones that matter.

How do I write a software engineer resume with no experience?

Lead with education and show the GPA only when it is above 3.5. Treat an internship as a job with the same kind of bullets: the entry example's year-long internship carries a retry queue that replayed 3,400 failed events and a coverage gain from 61% to 78%. Then give two projects with adoption numbers. Shiftquilt shows 340 stars and 11 outside contributors, and Latency probe shows 1,100 downloads, proof that people other than you ran the code. Link each project to its repository and put a link to your code in the header, where a screener looks first.
