What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Book size, then the renewals

Eleven point two million across thirty-eight accounts. Everything else on this page is read against those two numbers, which is why they sit in the title line rather than three bullets down.

  2. 2

    Renewals given as a fraction

Thirty-six of thirty-eight. A retention percentage hides how many accounts there were and how big the ones that left were. The fraction, with the top ten named separately, hides nothing.

  3. 3

    Growth from the shrinking accounts

One point three million of the year's growth came from four accounts that had been going backwards. Turning a declining account is the hardest thing in this job and the most convincing thing on the page.

  4. 4

    Margin moved by changing pricing

Ninety basis points, by moving twenty-two accounts from spot pricing to annual agreements. Margin on an account resume is rare, and giving the lever behind it makes the claim checkable.

  5. 5

A recovery written as a recovery

A one point nine million account saved after a nine-week supply failure, and it signed again. Every account manager has lived through one of these. Almost none of them put it on the page.

  6. 6

    Packaging years kept to two

The earlier book keeps retention and the error-rate fix, and drops the rest. The industrial book is what this reader is hiring against, so that is where the lines were spent.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The headline gives accounts and book size. The summary pairs retention with the pressure it was held under. The bullets carry growth with its mechanism, reviews with their output and an error rate with its fix, and the support year stays because clearing a migration backlog counts.

Typical titles: Account coordinator, Associate account manager, Inside account manager

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline is the book. The summary gives renewals as a fraction, growth and margin together. The bullets name where growth came from, the pricing lever behind the margin, and an account recovered after a supply failure. The packaging years keep two lines.

Typical titles: Account manager, Client relationship manager, Sales account manager

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope narrows and deepens: nine accounts instead of thirty-eight, four plants, a book grown by a third, two customers moved to sole source, agreements indexed against metal increases, and a quality escalation count that fell. The earlier book keeps one line.

Typical titles: Strategic account manager, Key account manager, National account manager

04Summary

Weak

Dedicated account manager known for building trusted long-term client relationships, delivering exceptional service and consistently growing revenue across a diverse portfolio of accounts.

Strong

Account manager with six years in packaging and industrial distribution, holding an $11.2M book across 38 accounts. Renewed 36 of 38 last year and grew the book 17% while gross margin rose 90 basis points.

Two industries, a book size, an account count, renewals as a fraction, growth and margin. A hiring manager can size this candidate against their own open book before the end of the second sentence. The weak version builds trusted relationships across a diverse portfolio, which describes every account manager alive and none of them in particular.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Managed a portfolio of key accounts, building strong relationships and ensuring high levels of client satisfaction and retention year over year.

Strong

  • Grew the book 17% in a year, and $1.3M of that came from 4 accounts that had been shrinking.

A growth rate, the dollars inside it, and the fact that the dollars came from accounts going the wrong way. That is the hardest version of the job and an interviewer will want to know exactly how. The weak bullet has no book, no number, no denominator and no mechanism, and it fits every account resume in the stack without a word changed.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Retention claimed as a percentage with no book behind it

Fix: Ninety-five percent of four accounts and of forty are different achievements. Give the number of accounts, the dollars in the book, and how many renewed. The fraction is harder to write and impossible to argue with, which is exactly why it works.

  2. Relationship language standing in for commercial results

Fix: Trusted advisor, strong rapport and long-term partnership describe a feeling, not an outcome. Replace each with what the relationship produced: a renewal, a price increase accepted, a second line added, an escalation closed, a competitor kept out of the account.

  3. Growth reported without saying where it came from

Fix: A book can grow because the customer had a good year, because a competitor failed, or because you did something. Name the mechanism: items added, a line converted, spot pricing moved to contract, a shrinking account turned. Unattributed growth reads as luck.

  4. Nothing about margin, pricing or terms

Fix: Account managers hold price as much as they hold accounts. Put the margin rate, the increase you got accepted, the indexed agreement or the contract term next to the revenue. A page that never mentions price reads as service coordination rather than account ownership.

  5. Service failures and saves left off entirely

Fix: Every real book has had a bad quarter. A recovered account, with what went wrong, how long it took and whether it signed again, is more convincing than an unbroken record. It also gives the interviewer the story they were going to ask for anyway.

08Format and template

Reverse chronological, one page, with the book size and account count in the title line of every role. Keep renewals, growth and margin in the top third where a scanning manager finds them, and give fractions rather than bare percentages. Numbers belong in the text, never inside a graphic. This example uses Blue Professional. The same content works in Standard, Executive Classic and Beige Two Column.

09Questions account managers ask

What numbers belong on an account manager resume?

Book size in dollars, account count, renewals as a fraction rather than a rate, growth with the mechanism behind it, gross margin or the price increases you held, and the number of accounts you personally opened or recovered. For manufacturing and distribution books, add order accuracy, quality escalations closed and any move from second source to sole source. If a number would collapse under a reference call, leave it off.

What is the difference between an account manager and a sales representative?

Both sit in the same federal occupation, and the resumes should not look the same. A sales representative is measured on quota attainment and new business inside a territory. An account manager is measured on a named book: what renewed, what grew, at what margin, and what was recovered after something went wrong. If you are moving between the two, rewrite the metrics for the job you want rather than keeping the ones you were paid on.

How do I write this resume if I lost a major account?

Say what happened and what you did about it. Accounts leave because of price, a plant failure, an acquisition or a change of buyer, and hiring managers know it. Give the size of the loss, what you recovered elsewhere in the same year, and what changed in how you run a book afterwards. A page with no loss on it and no explanation of a flat year invites the question you were avoiding.

Do account managers need certifications?

Not for the job. The federal listing for this occupation shows no license on the seller and ten optional certifications from nine organizations, most of them tied to a specific product category rather than to account management as a discipline. Strategic account management credentials do exist outside that list and are worth a line if your employer paid for one. Nobody has been hired on the strength of one, and nobody has been rejected for lacking one.

Should I list my accounts by name?

Usually not. Customer names are often covered by a confidentiality clause, and a reader cannot verify them anyway. Describe them instead: three national grocery chains, nine tier-one automotive plants, a regional hospital group. That gives the scale and the complexity without the risk, and it travels better, because the reader cares what kind of buyer you can hold rather than whose logo was on the invoice.

How long should an account manager resume be?

One page. Even eleven years fits once earlier books shrink to a line carrying their size and their renewal record. Cut the relationship adjectives first, then the software list, then anything describing meeting cadence without an outcome. What survives is the book, the accounts, the renewals, the growth, the margin and the recoveries, which between them are the whole of what the interview is going to be about anyway.
