What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    New revenue, said plainly

Nine point four million of new business and two verticals opened. Development work is judged on revenue that did not exist before, and the headline says exactly that rather than total revenue touched.

  2. 2

    Verticals opened from nothing

Aerospace maintenance and grain handling, reaching three point six million between them. Naming the categories lets a reader judge how far the two were from the company's existing book.

  3. 3

Bid win rate with a fraction

Nine of twenty-two, and response time cut from eighteen days to six. The fraction stops the reader guessing at the denominator, and the turnaround explains how the rate moved.

  4. 4

Partners counted by what they sent

Four referral partners producing thirty-seven qualified opportunities. Signing partners is easy and meaningless. What the partners actually sent is the only number worth putting down.

  5. 5

Sales cycle cut by qualifying earlier

Eleven months to seven, by asking about plant spend at the first meeting. Cycle length is a development metric nobody writes down, and it is the one an operations-heavy buyer cares about most.

  6. 6

    Representative years, two lines

The first job keeps pipeline created and the conversion improvement, and nothing else. The reader is deciding on the new business record, so that is where the space went.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The headline is pipeline created, because that is what this job produces. The summary carries it through to signed revenue so the first number can be checked. The bullets show where the list came from, what moved conversion and which campaign worked, and the operations year stays because it is where lane knowledge comes from.

Typical titles: Business development representative, Sales development representative, Inside business development

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline claims new revenue and new verticals. The bullets name the categories opened, give the bid record as a fraction, count partners by what they produced, and cut the sales cycle with a qualifying change. The representative years keep two lines.

Typical titles: Business development manager, New business manager, Commercial development manager

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from accounts to markets: a region opened from nothing, new revenue against the budget that bought it, a channel that changed the mix of bookings, one long evaluation won, and two market entries stopped on purpose. The manager years keep one line.

Typical titles: Director of business development, Head of new business, VP of business development

04Summary

Weak

Strategic business development professional with a passion for identifying new opportunities, forging lasting partnerships and driving sustainable growth in competitive markets.

Strong

Business development manager with six years in freight and industrial services, responsible for revenue the company did not have before. Signed $9.4M of new business across 31 accounts and opened 2 verticals from nothing.

Two industries, a definition of the job, new revenue with an account count, and two categories entered. Everything there is checkable in a reference call. The weak version identifies opportunities and forges partnerships, which is the job description rather than the record, and it would fit any applicant for any development role.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Identified and pursued new business opportunities, building strong relationships with prospective clients and contributing to significant revenue growth.

Strong

  • Signed 4 referral partners, and those partners sent 37 qualified opportunities in the first year.

A partner count and what the partners produced. Signing partners is the easy half and almost every development resume stops there, so the opportunity count is the thing that proves the channel was real rather than announced. The weak bullet pursues opportunities and contributes to growth without naming a company, a market, a number or a single thing that actually happened.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Total revenue claimed where new revenue belongs

Fix: A development resume that quotes the whole book is claiming credit for what existed before. Separate the two: revenue from accounts that had never bought, verticals entered, markets opened. If an account was already buying, it belongs to account management, not to you.

  2. Pipeline created with no conversion behind it

Fix: Pipeline is the easiest number on any sales page to inflate, because nobody audits a stage change. Follow it through: how much closed, how many accounts, over what period. A pipeline figure with no signings underneath it makes a reader discount everything else on the page.

  3. Partners and alliances counted by signature

Fix: Signing a partner agreement takes an afternoon. Say what the partnership produced: opportunities sent, revenue sourced, share of bookings, how long it took to get the first deal. An unquantified partner list reads as activity that somebody stopped measuring.

  4. No market or territory definition anywhere

Fix: New business in a defined market is a different job from new business anywhere. Name the geography, the vertical, the company size band or the spend threshold you were hunting in. Without it a reader cannot tell whether your record transfers to the market they are staffing.

  5. Deal length and process left out entirely

Fix: Buyers now take most of a year and bring a committee. Give the cycle length, the buying group size, the evaluation you survived and anything you did to shorten it. It says whether you can hold a long process or only close quick ones.

08Format and template

Reverse chronological, one page, with new revenue and the market definition in the title line of every role. Keep pipeline, signings and cycle length in the top third, and put a partner count next to what the partners produced. Numbers belong in the text where a parser reads them rather than in a chart. This example uses Blue Professional. The same content works in Standard, Executive Classic and Beige Two Column.

09Questions business development managers ask

What numbers belong on a business development resume?

New revenue from accounts that had never bought, pipeline created with the conversion underneath it, account and logo counts, verticals or regions opened, bid records as fractions, partner counts paired with opportunities sourced, average cycle length, and the development budget you spent. For director roles, add the markets you chose not to enter and what you did with the money instead.

How is business development different from sales on a resume?

Sales is measured against a quota inside a defined territory. Business development is measured on revenue that did not exist before: new logos, new categories, new geographies, new channels. If your page reads as quota attainment, you are applying as a sales representative with a different title. Rewrite around what was created rather than what was covered, and keep the quota line if you had one, because it proves you can close.

What if most of my pipeline has not closed yet?

Say so, with the dates. Long-cycle development work often leaves the closing to the year after, and a reader who sees a large pipeline and no revenue will assume the worst unless you explain. Give what has signed, what is under evaluation with its stage and size, and how long your typical deal takes. Honesty about a twelve-month cycle is far more convincing than a rounded-up closed number.

Do business development managers need certifications?

No. The occupation this title falls under carries no license, and the federal listing shows thirty-five optional certifications from eighteen organizations, none of them specific to business development. Alliance and partnership credentials exist and are worth a line if a partnership motion is the job you want. What actually gets read is new revenue, markets opened and the length of the deals you have survived.

Should I name the clients and partners I signed?

Name the category, not the company, unless the deal was public and you have permission. Two national grain handlers, a tier-one aerospace maintenance provider, four regional carriers: that gives the scale and the complexity without breaching a confidentiality clause. If a logo is genuinely famous and genuinely yours, one named win can be worth including, but a list of logos with no numbers attached reads as decoration.

How long should a business development resume be?

One page. Eleven years fits once earlier roles collapse to a line holding new revenue and one market opened. Cut the conference list first, then the tool inventory, then any sentence about relationships that has no number after it. What survives is new revenue, logos, markets, partners and cycle length, which is what the first interview will work through anyway.
