Sales manager resume examples & writing guide for 2026
Three sales management resumes at team lead, branch and regional level, each rendered in the template the page names and pulled apart note by note. Every one names the team, the number it carried, and what the manager changed.
Written by the Resumi editorial team for a fictional candidate. Role facts come from O*NET and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Strength band is Resumi’s optimization score, not a ranking any employer sees.
What makes this resume work
Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note. Hover a note and its marker lifts.
1
Team size and book first
Four representatives, a branch worth nine and a half million. First-line management is bought by span and number, and both belong in the title line rather than three bullets into the page.
2
Attainment moved, not claimed
Ninety-one percent to a hundred and seven. A manager's own quota stops mattering the day they get a team, and the honest replacement is what the team did before and after.
3
Ramp cut with the method
Five months to three, through a shadowing plan and a weekly deal review. Ramp is the metric new managers are measured on first, and the method is what makes it look deliberate.
4
Two representatives turned around
Both off performance plans and above quota by year end. Turning a struggling rep is harder than replacing one, and it is the clearest evidence that coaching happened at all.
5
Forecast variance the branch trusted
Nineteen percent down to seven. Forecast accuracy is what a general manager notices about a sales manager, and it is almost never written on a resume at this level.
6
The selling year still counts
A hundred and fourteen percent of a two point three million quota, before the desk changed. Credibility with a team starts with having carried a number, so the last selling year keeps its line.
1
Representatives and branch together
Nine people, forty-two million. Span of control and revenue are the two numbers a regional manager uses to decide whether this candidate is ready for a bigger branch or a second one.
2
Quota coverage as a fraction
Five of nine at quota, then eight of nine. Team attainment can be carried by two strong people, so the count of representatives hitting their number is the figure that cannot be faked.
3
Turnover with the fill time
Thirty-eight percent to twelve, and openings filled in under forty days. Turnover is the most expensive thing on a branch profit and loss statement, and few managers ever put a number on it.
4
A forecast the plant planned from
Variance under six percent for eight quarters, used for production planning. Being believed by operations is a stronger claim than accuracy on its own, because it says what the number was used for.
5
Margin from a policy change
A hundred and forty basis points, by taking discount authority away from the desk. It is a management decision with a commercial result, which is exactly what separates this page from a rep resume.
6
Team lead years, two lines
The first team keeps attainment and ramp, and drops the rest. The branch is what this reader is hiring against, so the branch is where the space went.
1
Managers, representatives and states
Three managers, thirty-one people, a hundred and eighty million across eleven states. Leading managers is a different job from leading sellers, and the first line says which one this is.
2
Region grown, attainment moved
A hundred and forty-one million to a hundred and eighty, with attainment from eighty-six to a hundred and three. Revenue can grow while a plan is still being missed, so both numbers have to be there.
3
Pay plan with a price result
Revenue sold below floor price down from eighteen percent to four, after the plan moved onto margin. Compensation design is the strongest lever at this level and it is measured in what stopped happening.
4
Five promoted, no managers lost
Building the bench and keeping it. A regional job is judged on the leaders it produces, and a promotion count with a retention record beside it answers both halves of that.
5
Territories redrawn after an acquisition
Thirty-one territories, and no account left unassigned longer than five days. Integration work is invisible when it goes well, so the coverage gap is the only way to show it went well.
6
The branch job, one line
Seven years running a branch keep the revenue and the forecast record, and nothing else. Eleven years fit one page because the earlier work keeps two numbers and loses the description.

The headline gives the team and the book. The summary replaces a personal quota with what the team did. The bullets carry ramp with its method, a turnaround, forecast variance and retention through a pay-plan change, and the last selling year stays because it is where credibility comes from.
Typical titles: Sales team lead, Sales supervisor, Assistant sales manager
Mid-level
3–6 years
The headline pairs the team with the branch. The summary gives plan attainment and turnover. The bullets carry quota coverage as a fraction, turnover with fill time, a forecast operations planned from, and margin won by removing discount authority. The team lead years keep two lines.
Typical titles: Branch sales manager, District sales manager, Sales manager
Senior
7+ years
Scope moves from a branch to a region: managers led, representatives underneath them, states covered, revenue grown against plan attainment, a pay plan redesigned around margin, five promotions with no manager lost, and territories redrawn after an acquisition. The branch years keep one line.
Typical titles: Regional sales manager, Director of sales, National sales manager
04Summary
Weak
Dynamic sales leader with a proven track record of building high-performing teams, exceeding targets and driving sustainable revenue growth in fast-paced environments.
Strong
Branch sales manager with six years leading inside and outside teams in industrial distribution, running 9 representatives and a $42M branch. Hit 104% of plan in two of three years and cut voluntary turnover from 38% to 12%.
Span of control, branch revenue, plan attainment across three named years, and turnover with a baseline. A regional manager can size the candidate against an open branch immediately. The weak version builds high-performing teams in fast-paced environments, which is true of every sales manager who has ever applied and tells the reader nothing.
05Bullets
Weak
Led a high-performing sales team to consistently exceed targets while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Strong
Took the branch from 5 of 9 representatives at quota to 8 of 9 by redrawing territories on account potential.
A count of people hitting their number, before and after, and the change that produced it. Team attainment can be carried by two strong sellers, so the fraction is the honest measure and the territory redraw is the management act. The weak bullet fosters a culture and exceeds unnamed targets, and it would sit unchanged on any sales manager resume in the pile.

The manager's own selling record still leading the page
Fix: Personal attainment is worth one line after your first management job. Lead with what the team did: how many representatives hit quota, what it closed against plan, what ramp and turnover did. A page of individual wins reads as a rep who was given a title.
2
Team attainment given without the count at quota
Fix: A team can hit a hundred and four percent of plan while five of nine people are missing. Give both figures. The fraction at quota is the number that tells a regional manager whether you built a team or inherited two strong sellers who carried it.
3
No span of control anywhere on the page
Fix: Four direct reports and thirty-one are different jobs. State how many people, whether any of them were managers, how many locations, and the revenue underneath. Span and number are the first two things a hiring manager needs, so put them in the role title line.
4
Nothing about turnover, ramp or promotions
Fix: A sales manager is judged on the team that remains, not only the number it hit. Put voluntary turnover with a baseline, time to fill an opening, ramp to first deal, and anyone you promoted. These are the figures a director asks about in the first interview.
5
Coaching and culture described without an outcome
Fix: Everyone claims a coaching cadence. Say what it changed: representatives brought off performance plans, win rate moved, forecast variance narrowed, slipped deals cut. A cadence with no result attached is the management version of listing daily activity.
08Format and template
Reverse chronological, one page, with team size and revenue in the title line of every management role. Put attainment, turnover and forecast accuracy in the top third, and keep the last selling job on the page as a single line so the reader can see you carried a number. Numbers belong in the text rather than a chart. This example uses Blue Professional. The same content works in Standard, Executive Classic and Beige Two Column.

09Questions sales managers ask
What numbers belong on a sales manager resume?
Span of control, revenue underneath you, attainment against plan for named years, and the count of representatives at quota rather than the team percentage alone. Add voluntary turnover with a baseline, time to fill an opening, ramp to first deal, forecast variance, gross margin, and the people you promoted. For regional roles, add branches, states and any territory or pay plan you redesigned.
Should I still show my own quota attainment as a manager?
One line, in your last selling role, and no more. Hiring managers want to see you carried a number before you asked other people to, because a manager who never has struggles to hold the room. After that the page belongs to the team. Keeping three roles of personal attainment on a management resume signals that the transition to leading never really happened.
How do I write this resume after a year the team missed plan?
Give the number and the reason, then what you changed. Plans get raised, a plant misses deliveries, a competitor buys a distributor, two top sellers leave in a quarter. Say what the team delivered, what the market did, and what you fixed — territories, coverage, the pay plan, the people. Under half of representatives hit quota in a typical year, and every director reading your page knows it.
Do sales managers need a degree or certification?
A bachelor's degree is the typical entry-level education for the occupation, together with under five years in a related sales job. Certification is optional: the federal listing shows thirty-five credentials across eighteen organizations, most of them tied to a product category or a software platform rather than to sales management itself. No license applies to the manager, though the goods your team sells may be licensed in some states.
How is a sales manager resume different from an account manager one?
The unit of measurement changes. An account manager is judged on a book: renewals, growth and margin inside named customers. A sales manager is judged on people: how many carry a quota, how many hit it, how fast new hires ramp, how many stay, and what the team delivered against plan. If you are moving from one to the other, rewrite every bullet around the new unit rather than relabeling the old ones.
How long should a sales manager resume be?
One page, through regional level. Eleven years fits once earlier branches shrink to a line holding revenue and one management number. Cut the methodology acronyms first, then the software list, then any sentence about culture that has no outcome attached. What survives is span of control, revenue, attainment, turnover, forecast accuracy and promotions, which between them are the whole of the first interview anyway.
