Human resources manager resume examples & writing guide for 2026
Three human resources manager resumes at first-manager, plant and director level, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each states what an HR recruiter reads first: the headcount served, the systems by name, turnover and time to fill, and the credential.
Written by the Resumi editorial team for a fictional candidate. Role facts come from O*NET and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Strength band is Resumi’s optimization score, not a ranking any employer sees.
What makes this resume work
Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note. Hover a note and its marker lifts.
1
Headcount and credential up top
Human resources manager, a 140-employee fabricator on two plants, SHRM-CP. Practitioners reviewing HR resumes ask for the employee count first, because a manager for 140 and a manager for many thousands are different jobs, and the credential tells a recruiter the exam is passed.
2
Promotion path in the summary
Manager after three years as the company's generalist, then the function's measures: hires a year and days to fill, turnover from 41% to 27%, enrollment in Paylocity, two audits with zero findings. A first-year manager's scope, stated in the units HR reports.
3
Scope before duties
One hundred forty employees, two plants, one coordinator, and the five things the role owns. Reviewers on HR forums call missing scope the first flaw they see, so the line names the population and the functions before any result.
4
Turnover with the three levers
Hourly turnover from 41% to 27% in a year, with the stay interviews, the shift premium and the 30-day check-ins that did it. The measure HR is judged on, and the method a plant manager will ask about in the interview.
5
Recruiting in the function's units
Forty-six requisitions a year, welders to controllers, 31 days to fill, 91% offer acceptance. Postings for plant HR roles ask for full-cycle recruiting of exempt and non-exempt staff, and these are the four numbers a recruiting report carries.
6
Generalist years kept as proof
Biweekly payroll for 120 with zero late runs, 38 hires a year, a 90-day onboarding plan that cut first-year quits from 14 to 6. The years before the title show the manager can still run the transactions.
1
Union plant in the headline
Human resources manager, a 520-employee union food plant on three shifts, SHRM-CP and PHR. Manufacturing HR postings ask for exempt and non-exempt populations and union experience by name, and the headline gives both before the summary.
2
Team, hires and grievances first
A team of three, 210 hires a year at 24 days to fill, hourly turnover from 58% to 33%, 22 grievances a year settled before arbitration, Workday live on time. The summary reads like the monthly HR report a plant manager receives.
3
Team and functions in one line
A three-person team for 520 employees on three shifts, and the five functions the manager owns. The headcount-to-HR ratio is what a hiring director uses to size the job, and the function list says generalist rather than specialist.
4
Contract administered, grievances counted
A bargaining agreement covering 310 hourly employees, 22 grievances a year settled at step one or two. Labor relations is the handbook's own example of what HR managers do, and settling early is the outcome a union plant measures.
5
Investigations with a documentation standard
Sixty-four employee relations cases and 11 investigations a year, each documented inside ten days. Employer postings ask for investigations run end to end with documentation, and the count and the deadline show the standard rather than claim it.
6
First manager job in two lines
HR alone for 140 employees across two plants, 46 hires a year and open enrollment in Paylocity, hourly turnover from 41% to 27%. The first manager job keeps its scope and two results in two lines, so the plant role holds the page.
1
Director scope in the headline
Director of human resources, 2,400 employees at six sites, SHRM-SCP and SPHR. Practitioners note that a director at a small company and a lead partner at a large one can be the same job, so the headcount makes the title legible to a recruiter.
2
Function measures for a health system
Nurse turnover from 29% to 17%, 640 hires a year at 28 days to fill, a $9.2 million benefits renewal held to 4%, two union contracts settled. The summary states the four numbers a hospital executive would ask an HR director for.
3
Team, headcount and budget
A nine-person team for 2,400 employees at six sites and a $1.4 million department budget. Director postings ask for supervision of professional HR staff across functional areas, and the three figures give the scale in one line.
4
Contracts with the wage cost
Two union contracts covering 1,100 employees at a 3.2% annual wage cost, no work stoppage. Negotiating bargaining agreements is on the occupation's task list, and the cost figure turns the negotiation into a result an executive can price.
5
Benefits renewal against the trend
A quoted 9% increase brought to 4% on a $9.2 million renewal by moving to a self-funded plan. Benefits programs are among the handbook's core duties, and the dollar figure with the method is what a chief financial officer remembers.
6
Plant years in one line
The plant job keeps its population, its shifts and its turnover result in a single line. Five years of manufacturing HR compress to one measure so the director role holds the page and the reader sees the progression.

Common credentials
Certification is voluntary but employers may prefer or require it. CareerOneStop lists 35 certifications, with the SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR and GPHR flagged in demand
Experience leads because the promotion is the story: a generalist who took over the function and can show its measures after one year, from turnover and time to fill to an enrollment moved online and a handbook written. The generalist years keep two lines with their own counts, the degree sits below, and the SHRM-CP is dated with its issuer.
Typical titles: Human resources manager, HR manager, People operations manager
Mid-level
3–6 years
The default view. A plant HR manager's page in the units the function reports: hires and days to fill, hourly turnover, grievances and where they settled, cases and investigations with a documentation standard, an HRIS launch with its scope. The first manager job keeps two lines, and the SHRM-CP and PHR sit dated under the experience.
Typical titles: Human resources manager, Plant HR manager, HR business partner
Senior
7+ years
Scope replaces transactions: a team and a budget, turnover for the largest population, contracts with their wage cost, a benefits renewal with its method, a review cycle coached across 140 managers, agency charges closed with no payments. The plant years keep one line, and the SHRM-SCP and SPHR are dated at the bottom.
Typical titles: Director of human resources, Senior human resources manager, Head of people
04Summary
Weak
Results-driven HR professional with 10+ years of progressive experience and a passion for people, culture and building high-performing teams in fast-paced environments.
Strong
Human resources manager, seven years, the last four at a 520-employee union food plant on 3 shifts: team of 3, 210 hires a year at 24 days to fill, hourly turnover cut from 58% to 33%, 22 grievances a year settled before arbitration, Workday launched on schedule.
Headcount, population and shifts first, then the function's own measures, each with a number a reference call can confirm. The weak version could open any HR resume, and reviewers on HR forums say a summary without scope is the first thing they discount.
05Bullets
Weak
Responsible for employee relations, recruitment, onboarding and compliance for all plant employees in partnership with leadership.
Strong
Administered a bargaining agreement for 310 hourly employees, 22 grievances a year settled at step 1 or 2.
The population covered, the volume of grievances and where they settled. Interpreting labor contracts and handling grievances is on the occupation's task list, and a plant with a union measures its HR manager by how early disputes close. The weak bullet lists the posting's duties back to the recruiter and gives nothing a plant manager or a union steward could check.

Employers listed without their headcount or population
Fix: Reviewers on HR forums call this the first gap: an HR manager for a company of a dozen and one for many thousands read the same without the number. Give every employer its employee count, sites, the exempt and non-exempt mix, and whether the workforce was union.
2
Function measures replaced by adjectives
Fix: Results-driven and people-first tell a recruiter nothing they can check. Write the measures the function reports: hires a year and days to fill, turnover by population, grievances and where they settled, cases and investigations, enrollment size and the benefits cost change.
3
The HRIS missing from the page
Fix: The occupation's posting data lists Workday, SAP and PeopleSoft among the systems in demand, and practitioners say the platform and any payroll or time-and-attendance work is what they search for first. Name the system, the population on it, and any launch or migration you ran.
4
Investigations and terminations left vague
Fix: Employer postings ask for investigations run end to end with documentation and hands-on experience with terminations, described by type and outcome, never by person. State the count a year, the documentation standard you held, and how the outcomes stood up to charges or audits.
5
A colorful template at director level
Fix: Recruiters hiring HR leaders on the forums say plain black-and-white resumes went further than colorful templates, and the reader judges the document's polish as a sample of the work. Keep one accent, align every bullet, lead with the outcome, and keep the tenses consistent.
08Format and template
Beige Border frames the page with a thin rule and a warm ground, which reads as considered without color competing with the numbers, the look practitioners hiring HR leaders said went furthest. The summary carries the scope, each bullet holds one measure on one line, the certifications sit dated under the experience, and the skills block is grouped by function. The same content moves into Standard, Warm Classic or Blue Professional. Whichever you choose, the headcount, the systems and the turnover figure stay in the first screen.

09Questions human resources managers ask
What numbers belong on a human resources manager resume?
The ones the function already reports to leadership: employees and sites supported, HR staff supervised, hires a year with days to fill and offer acceptance, turnover by population and how far it moved, employee relations cases and investigations with their documentation standard, grievances and the step they settled at, open enrollment size and the benefits cost change, audits and charges with their outcomes, and the budget. The occupation's tasks run from staffing and disputes to compensation and bargaining, and postings for plant and public-sector HR managers ask for every one of these. Reviewers on HR forums say a resume without them reads like a job description.
How do I move from HR generalist to HR manager?
Show the manager's work you already do. The handbook says managers typically need a bachelor's degree and 5 years or more of related experience, often starting as specialists, and postings for manager roles ask for supervisory or lead experience and full ownership of at least one function. Write the generalist years in the manager's units: the population you supported, the function you ran end to end, the measure you moved, the system you administered. Practitioners warn that a short stint in the current role reads as a risk to a hiring manager, so make the move from a role with full years and a result in it.
Which HR certification should I list: SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR?
The one you hold, with the issuing body and the dates. CareerOneStop lists 35 certifications from 15 organizations for the occupation and flags the SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR and GPHR as in demand, and the postings behind this page named SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP and PHR or SPHR as preferred. The SHRM-CP requires no HR title, degree or prior experience to sit, while the SHRM-SCP asks for strategic-level HR work or a period holding the SHRM-CP, so the senior credential signals the level as well as the exam. Practitioners in a tight market suggest adding an HRCI credential where employers ask for it.
Does a manufacturing or union HR manager resume differ from a corporate one?
Yes, in the population and the measures. Manufacturing postings ask for exempt and non-exempt workforces, shifts, employment law compliance and labor relations, and the handbook lists negotiating and administering labor contracts and coordinating grievance procedures among the work of labor relations directors. Write the hourly headcount, the shifts, the bargaining agreement and its population, grievances a year and where they settled, safety and workers' compensation work, and turnover by shift. A corporate or business partner resume states the client group, the leaders advised, and the engagement, performance and org design work instead, with headcount all the same.
How long should a human resources manager resume be?
One page through the first manager roles, and one page is still possible for a director with ten years, as the senior example shows, by giving earlier roles one line each. HR readers judge the document's polish as a sample of the work, so consistent dates, aligned bullets and present tense for the current role matter as much as length. Give the current role five or six one-line bullets with measures, earlier roles one or two, the certifications a dated block with their bodies, and the degree one line. A second page is earned by multiple functions and regions, not by adjectives.
How should an HR manager show AI and analytics work?
By the decision it changed. Trade press covering HR in 2026 puts AI integration and skills inventories built from workforce data at the top of the agenda, and employer postings ask for headcount models, engagement data and AI tools used to shape recommendations. Write the dashboard or model, the population it covered, who used it and what it moved: a turnover report by unit that led to a shift premium, a skills inventory that redirected hiring, a policy on AI use that you authored. The occupation's own posting data still lists Excel and PowerPoint first among tools, so the spreadsheet counts too.
