What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

CPA and standards in the headline

Senior accountant, CPA, a multi-entity group and the two standards most industry postings name, ASC 606 and 842. A controller knows the license and the technical range before the summary starts.

  2. 2

    Ownership stated as the close

Six entities, $140 million and a 5-day close is the mid-level claim. It says what would stop if this accountant left, which is the difference between preparing entries and owning the books.

  3. 3

A standard adopted, with the balance

The ASC 842 adoption carries the lease count, the $18 million right-of-use balance and the auditor's verdict. Technical work is usually claimed as familiarity. Here it is a project with a scope and an outcome.

  4. 4

Review work with staff and volume

Ninety reconciliations reviewed a month, prepared by two staff, cleared inside the close. Reviewing is the first supervisory step, and a count of what was reviewed says more than a line about mentoring.

  5. 5

    Three clean audits, counted

One hundred and twenty request items a year and zero proposed adjustments for three years. Audit outcomes are the external proof a controller trusts, and the request count shows the scale of what was defended.

  6. 6

Firm years kept in engagement counts

Fourteen clients a year, five in charge, every engagement under budget by 6%. Public accounting years are read for exactly those two numbers, so they stay while the rest of the firm detail goes.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Experience leads because the first year produced close, reconciliation and audit numbers. The headline and a dated line carry the CPA exam progress, which staff postings screen on first. Every bullet holds a count, a dollar figure, a day count or an error rate, and the internship reads as engagements rather than a semester.

Typical titles: Staff accountant, Accountant I, Audit associate

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline adds the license, the group structure and two accounting standards. Each role opens with what was owned, then the adoption, the review volume and the audit record, each with a count and a result. The firm years keep three lines with engagement counts and budgets, and the license closes the page dated.

Typical titles: Senior accountant, Accountant II, Senior audit associate

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces preparation: team size, revenue, close days, the migration, the audits and the inventory dollars found, each with the routine behind it. The healthcare years keep one line, the firm years keep their dates, and two credentials with dates close the page on one sheet.

Typical titles: Accounting manager, Assistant controller, Senior accountant, team lead

04Summary

Weak

Detail-oriented accounting professional with strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of GAAP, seeking to leverage expertise in a challenging senior accountant role.

Strong

Senior accountant and Minnesota CPA with five years in public accounting and industry, the last three owning the close for a 6-entity, $140 million orthopedic group. Closes in 5 business days, led the ASC 842 adoption for 22 leases and has had no audit adjustments in three years.

License, entities, revenue, close days, a standard adopted with a lease count and an audit record. A controller can verify every one of them with a former manager or the audit letter. The weak version could open any accounting resume and says nothing a screener can check.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for month-end close, journal entries, account reconciliations and assisting with the annual audit as needed.

Strong

  • Led the ASC 842 adoption for 22 clinic and equipment leases, $18 million of right-of-use assets, booked with no auditor adjustments.

A standard, a scope, a balance and the auditor's verdict, all in one line. An interviewer can ask about the discount rate and the practical expedients, and the candidate can answer from the work. The weak bullet is the job description every posting carries and could sit on any accountant's resume in any industry unchanged.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. CPA status missing or vague

Fix: Licensed, sections passed, or exam scheduled: say which, with the state and the date. Postings screen on it before anything else, and a candidate who writes CPA candidate without naming a passed section reads as one who has not started.

  2. The close described without a day count or a company size

Fix: Every controller measures the close in business days and knows what a $20 million company's close looks like against a $200 million one. Write both: closed a 6-entity, $140 million group in 5 business days. Without them the line could be anyone's.

  3. Audit work written as assisting with the audit

Fix: Name your part in the numbers auditors use: request items prepared, accounts defended, adjustments proposed. Zero proposed adjustments for three years, or 40 of 55 request items prepared, is a result. Assisting is a duty.

  4. Technical standards listed as familiarity

Fix: Familiar with ASC 606 and 842 is a claim. Adopted ASC 842 for 22 leases and $18 million of right-of-use assets is a project with a scope. Write the standard, the count and the balance, and leave the adjectives out.

  5. Systems named as accounting software

Fix: Postings name the system: NetSuite, Sage Intacct, SAP, QuickBooks, BlackLine, Concur. O*NET's list for the occupation runs to dozens of named products. List the ones you close in, and put each one inside a bullet with a volume beside it.

08Format and template

Single column, standard headings, no photo, no color blocks. Controllers and firm recruiters read the summary, the credential line and the most recent close, in that order, and a plain layout keeps those on the first screen. This example uses Executive Classic, a single-column template with room for a dated certifications block under the experience. The same content works in Standard, Warm Classic and Maroon Elegant, all single column. Whichever you choose, keep the CPA line and the close cycle above the fold.

09Questions accountants ask

How do I list CPA exam progress on an accountant resume?

As a dated line in the certifications block and a short note in the headline: CPA candidate, FAR and AUD passed, REG and BAR scheduled. Once licensed, write the state and the renewal date. Staff postings ask about progress in the first screen, and firms typically expect the exam finished within two years of hire. Most states now offer a 120-hour route with two years of experience alongside the 150-hour and graduate-degree routes, so name the path you are on if it affects your timeline.

What numbers belong on an accountant resume?

The ones a controller already tracks: business days to close, entities and revenue in the close, reconciliations owned or reviewed, invoice and journal entry volumes, the size of any register or balance you maintain, audit request items and proposed adjustments, and dollars found or saved. Put each number in its own unit and give the before and after where there is one. A close cut from 8 days to 5 is a result. Streamlined the close is a phrase.

How do I describe audit experience for an industry job?

Count it the way a firm does: clients a year, the revenue range, how many engagements you ran in charge, and whether they came in under budget. Then say what it taught you that the industry role needs, usually documentation, controls and clearing review notes in one round. The mid-level example keeps its firm years to three lines: 14 clients, 5 in charge, 6% under budget, four exam sections passed while working two busy seasons.

Should I list the accounting systems I know?

Yes, by product, and only the ones you close in. Postings name NetSuite, Sage Intacct, SAP, QuickBooks, BlackLine and Concur, and O*NET's technology list for the occupation runs to dozens of named products. A line that says ERP experience matches none of them. Put each system inside a bullet with a volume: 90 reconciliations a month in BlackLine, a migration to NetSuite with 4,200 items reconciled. Excel goes on the list too, because every posting still asks.

How do I move from senior accountant to accounting manager?

Show the manager's numbers inside the senior role: staff whose work you review and how much, the close you own end to end, an audit you ran as the main contact, a system or standard you led, and any budget or cost work. Postings for manager and assistant controller roles ask for a CPA, five or more years and evidence of leading a close and an audit. The senior example's first bullets, a team of five, a 4-day close and three clean audits, grew out of exactly those lines.

How long should an accountant resume be?

One page through about ten years. The manager example holds nine years on one sheet by giving the earlier roles one line each and the firm years their dates. A second page is fair for a controller or a partner-track CPA with several companies or a large client list to account for. When you cut, drop duties first and keep every day count, dollar figure and audit result.
