  1. 1

    In-house, paid social and DTC

Art director, in-house brand and paid social, DTC subscription. The headline tells a brand this art director has worked on its side of the table, on the channels growth teams buy.

  2. 2

    Campaigns with subscribers added

Three seasonal campaigns a year across paid social, email, site and packaging, the spring launch adding 41,000 subscribers. A business result in the first bullet is what separates a campaign from a mood board.

  3. 3

    Shoots directed on budget

Eighteen photo and video shoots, from casting and food styling to on-set direction, each within budget. Brand postings ask art directors to direct talent and sets, and this shows the full scope.

  4. 4

    Click-through raised by testing

Paid social click-through up 32% from testing five concepts a month with the growth team. Brand postings ask art directors to iterate on performance data, and this names the method and the lift.

  5. 5

A template library that cut requests

Brand guidelines and a Figma and After Effects template library used by 12 marketers, studio requests down 40%. Systems that let others ship on-brand work free the studio for campaigns.

  6. 6

    Concepts approved by founders

Campaign concepts presented to the CMO and founders, 80% approved in the first round. Presenting final layouts for approval is one of the occupation's highest-rated tasks, and the rate shows it lands.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two agency years in four counted bullets: concepts developed with a copywriter and how many ran, paid social assets delivered on deadline, shoots held to budget, and AI tools that sped up early frames without replacing judgment. The internship keeps one line.

Typical titles: Junior art director, Associate art director, Art director

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years told as campaigns and their results: seasonal launches with subscribers added, shoots directed within budget, click-through raised by testing concepts, a template library that cut requests, designers and freelancers managed, and concepts approved by the founders. The agency role keeps one line.

Typical titles: Art director, Senior art director, In-house art director

  • Senior

    7+ years

Directing the team replaces directing every shoot: five creatives and a yearly asset count, agency work brought in-house with the saving, an AI workflow with its time cut, a first TV campaign with its lift, partners briefed within budget, and designers promoted. Earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Associate creative director, Creative director, Design director

04Summary

Weak

Visionary and passionate art director with a strong eye for design and a proven track record of creating stunning visuals.

Strong

Art director with six years across agency and in-house work, the last four leading creative for a direct-to-consumer coffee brand. Raised paid social click-through 32% by testing concepts with the growth team.

A creative director reads for where you worked, what you led and what the work did before opening the portfolio. The strong version names agency and in-house years, the kind of brand and a tested result. The weak version praises an eye the portfolio has to show anyway.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Worked with the growth team on social ads and helped improve campaign performance across channels.

Strong

  • Increased paid social click-through 32% by testing 5 concepts a month across Meta and TikTok with the growth team.

Brand postings this year ask art directors to iterate creative on performance data, not only to make it look right. The strong bullet names the channels, how often concepts were tested and the lift that followed. The weak bullet says the art director helped, which hides who made the decision and leaves a reviewer nothing to compare between candidates.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Famous campaigns you did not lead

Fix: Competitor samples credit one art director with a global brand's best-known campaign. Claim the part you directed, name who you made it with, and give a result you can defend in an interview, such as subscribers added or click-through raised.

  2. Team work with no role stated

Fix: A creative staffing firm asks candidates to state their specific involvement in every team project. Say whether you concepted the idea, directed the shoot or built the system, and who your copywriter or creative director was.

  3. Strong visuals, no business result

Fix: A creative staffing director asks for the business impact behind each portfolio piece, such as sales or conversion. Put the same result in the matching bullet, so the resume and the portfolio tell one story about the work.

  4. AI use hidden or overstated

Fix: Agencies now expect AI fluency from junior creatives but treat over-reliance on it as a red flag in interviews. Name the tools you used, what they sped up and where your own judgment decided the final work.

  5. Shoots listed without their scope

Fix: Brand postings ask art directors to direct talent, styling and sets on shoots. Count the shoots you led, say what you directed on set and give the budget you held, since attending photo shoots is a core part of the job.

08Format and template

One page with the portfolio link in the header, since hiring managers often open the portfolio before the resume. Lead each role with campaigns, channels and results, then shoots, budgets and the people you directed. Keep tools in the sidebar and in the bullets where you used them, and keep the layout plain so the portfolio carries the visuals. This example uses Orange Creative. The same content works in Standard, Pink Accent and Red & Gray Modern.

09Questions art directors ask

How do you become an art director?

Usually through another design job first. BLS says art directors typically need a bachelor's degree in fine arts, a design subject or communications technology, and that most have 5 or more years in another occupation, such as graphic designer, fine artist, editor or photographer. O*NET's respondents agree on the degree, with 68 percent saying a new hire needs a bachelor's. Show the concepts and shoots you led, not only the layouts.

How much do art directors make?

The May 2025 median for art directors was $114,850, with the lowest tenth under $64,900 and the highest tenth over $213,050. By industry, motion picture and video paid a median $142,570, publishing and broadcasting $122,700, advertising and public relations $121,490 and management and technical consulting $95,200. Self-employed art directors are the largest group, at 62 percent of the occupation.

What software do art directors use?

Adobe tools and Figma. O*NET's count of 2025 postings for art directors names Adobe Creative Cloud in 38 percent, Photoshop in 25, Figma in 24, Illustrator in 23, InDesign in 20 and After Effects in 11. Brand postings read for this page also ask for AI image tools such as Midjourney and Firefly, with the judgment to know when to use them. List each where you used it.

What is the difference between an art director and a creative director?

Scope. O*NET counts creative director among the reported titles for art directors, and the occupation's top-rated task is working with creative directors to develop design solutions. In postings read for this page, an associate art director reports to a creative director, while an associate creative director directs design, copy and video together and briefs outside agencies. Use the title that matches the scope you actually held.

Are most art directors freelancers?

Many are. BLS counts 62 percent of art directors as self-employed and says that even so, they must still collaborate with designers and other staff and often work under pressure to meet strict deadlines. If you freelance, list it as one role with the clients you served, the campaigns you directed and their results, rather than as a string of short jobs.
