What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Audience size defines the seat

Six channels and 480,000 followers at a direct-to-consumer apparel label. Running 480,000 and running 8,000 are different jobs, and the headline settles which one this candidate has held.

  2. 2

    Revenue, not reach

Social-attributed revenue from $1.2M to $4.1M. Brands hire social managers for commercial results, and revenue is the number that survives a conversation with anyone outside the marketing team.

  3. 3

    Team and budget both named

One coordinator, two freelance editors and a $610K paid budget. At this level the manager is the seam between in-house people, freelancers and spend, and all three belong in the first bullet.

  4. 4

Engagement moved by a format shift

One point nine percent to 5.4%, with 70% of the calendar moved from static posts to short video. The decision behind the rate is what an interviewer wants, because the rate alone could be an algorithm change.

  5. 5

    Creator program with unit economics

Forty-eight partners producing 620 pieces a year at a third of studio cost. Creator work is usually described as relationships. Written as volume and cost, it reads as a production system instead.

  6. 6

    Agency years kept with renewals

Seven accounts, an engagement lift and $180K of renewals held. Agency social is often listed as a client roster. Written as retained revenue, it shows commercial judgment rather than exposure.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The headline names the accounts and the channels rather than claiming every platform. The summary pairs the following with the engagement rate. Each bullet holds a posting cadence, a view count, a message volume or a cost per booking, and the serving job stays because it produced an account.

Typical titles: Social media coordinator, Social media specialist, Content coordinator

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline pairs the channel count with the audience size and the business model. The current role opens with channels, followers, people and budget, then revenue, engagement with the format shift behind it, the creator program and response time. The agency years keep three lines with their own numbers.

Typical titles: Social media manager, Brand social manager, Social and content manager

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces the calendar: brands, people, budget, audience, revenue share, production brought in-house, crisis response. Each bullet carries the decision behind the number. The agency years keep one line with the account count and the engagement lift, and two dated platform certifications close the page.

Typical titles: Head of social, Director of social media, Social media director

04Summary

Weak

Passionate social media enthusiast with a keen eye for viral content and a proven ability to build engaged online communities across all major platforms.

Strong

Social media manager with five years in consumer brands, owning 6 channels and 480,000 followers for a direct-to-consumer apparel label. Grew social-attributed revenue from $1.2M to $4.1M across two financial years.

Channels owned, audience size, business model and a revenue figure with its baseline. A marketing director can size the seat and open the interview on the revenue line. The weak version claims every platform, names no number, and would fit any social resume ever written.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Created engaging content and managed daily posting across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest and X to grow brand awareness and community.

Strong

  • Raised Instagram engagement rate from 1.9% to 5.4% by moving 70% of the calendar from static posts to short video.

One channel, a rate with a baseline, and the format decision that moved it. An interviewer can ask what came off the calendar, who shot the video and what happened to production cost. The weak bullet lists six platforms and no outcome, which reads as breadth claimed rather than results held.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Follower counts with no engagement rate beside them

Fix: Growth is the easiest social number to buy and every hiring manager knows it. Pair the audience with a rate and, where you can, a business figure: 34,000 to 91,000 at 4.1% engagement, or 480,000 followers behind $4.1M of attributed revenue.

  2. Six platforms claimed, none of them owned

Fix: Social hiring has moved toward specialists. Name the two or three channels you actually ran, with the posting cadence and the audience on each, and put the rest in a skills line. Breadth claimed without numbers reads as breadth borrowed.

  3. Community management left as a word

Fix: It appears in roughly one posting in five and is almost never written with a scale. Give the volume and the clock: 5,800 inbound messages a year, 96% answered inside four hours, and the rota that made it possible.

  4. No link to the work

Fix: This is one of the few fields where the output is public. Put a short link in the header to campaigns, three or four videos and one reporting sample, and keep the numbers on it consistent with the resume so the two do not contradict each other.

  5. Paid social hidden inside organic work

Fix: Budget ownership is what separates a coordinator from a manager. Say how much you controlled, on which platforms, and what it returned: $610K of paid social at 3.8x, or $46K behind 12 openings at $2.40 a booking.

08Format and template

Standard headings, a header that carries a link to the work, and numbers written in the text rather than drawn as bars or platform icons an applicant tracking system reads as nothing. This is a visual field and a designed resume is read as evidence of taste, so a template with structure suits it, as long as the section names stay ordinary. This example uses Red & Gray Modern. The same content works in Standard, Orange Creative and Beige Border.

09Questions social media managers ask

Which metrics belong on a social media manager resume?

Audience size with an engagement rate beside it, posting cadence, and at least one business figure: attributed revenue, cost per acquisition or booking, return on ad spend, or share of company revenue. Add community numbers if you carried them, such as message volume and response time. Give every rate a baseline and a period. Follower counts alone are the easiest figure to inflate, so they carry almost nothing on their own.

Should I list every platform I have used?

No. Name the two or three channels you genuinely ran, with the audience and the cadence on each, and leave the rest to a skills line. Hiring has shifted toward people who can show depth on the platforms a brand actually cares about, and a headline claiming six platforms invites a question about which one you last posted to. If you specialise in short video or in community, say so directly.

Do I need a portfolio as a social media manager?

Yes, and it is easier here than in most fields because the work is public. Link a short page in the header with a few campaigns, three or four pieces of video, and one reporting sample that shows how you read performance. Keep the numbers on it consistent with the resume. Recruiters commonly open it before the call, and a portfolio that contradicts the resume costs more than having none.

How do I show paid social experience?

By the budget you controlled and what it returned. Say the annual or campaign spend, the platforms, and the result in the unit the business uses: return on ad spend, cost per acquisition, cost per booking. Note whether the budget was yours or whether you executed against someone else's, because that distinction is the difference between a coordinator role and a manager role and an interviewer will find it either way.

What should an entry-level social media resume include?

Anything you ran with real numbers, including accounts you started yourself. A restaurant or retail job that turned into a working account is stronger evidence than an internship with no output, so write it with the followers, the cadence and the engagement. Add the platform certifications, which are free and checkable, and link the work. Volume of output matters early: posts a week, videos edited, messages answered.

How long should a social media manager resume be?

One page. Even nine years fits, because earlier agency or coordinator work collapses to a single line carrying its account count and one rate. The portfolio link holds the detail a second page would, so spend the space on audience figures, rates and revenue rather than on campaign descriptions. In a field judged partly on editing, a resume that has been cut well is itself a small piece of evidence, and a two-page social resume rarely reads as one.
