Content writer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three content writing resumes at agency-writer, senior-writer and head-of-content level, each rendered in the template the page names and pulled apart note by note. Every one turns a volume of published work into a traffic or pipeline number.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Calendar ownership in the headline

The editorial calendar and a bench of six freelancers. Owning what gets written is a different job from writing it, and that distinction is what separates a senior writer from a productive one.

  2. 2

    Traffic and pipeline together

Forty-six thousand sessions to 214,000, and $4.3M of blog-sourced pipeline. Traffic is a marketing number and pipeline is a company number, and a head of content is hired on the second.

  3. 3

    Commissioning stated as a plan

Twenty-two pieces a month against a four-cluster plan. A calendar without a structure is a queue, and naming the clusters is what says the publishing had a shape rather than a cadence.

  4. 4

    Original research with its links

Three hundred and forty referring domains from one research report. Almost half of business marketers say they are increasing original research this year, and one report that earned links is the proof of it.

  5. 5

    An editorial standard, written down

A published standard for drafting with an assistant, with a named human editor on every piece. Teams are hiring writers who can set that line rather than writers who can beat a word count.

  6. 6

    Agency years kept as systems

The brief template and style guide that nine people still work from. Agency output is usually listed as clients. Written as the systems left behind, it reads as the beginning of running a function.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The headline names the format and the account count. The summary converts monthly output into one client's traffic. Each bullet holds a volume, a ranking ratio, a revision count or a fact-checking record, and the student paper stays because it shows commissioning rather than membership.

Typical titles: Content writer, SEO content writer, Staff writer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline pairs calendar ownership with the freelance bench. The current role opens with what gets commissioned, then traffic, pipeline, rankings, the research report and the editorial standard. The agency years keep three lines, each naming something still in use after the writer left.

Typical titles: Senior content writer, Content marketing manager, Content strategist

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces the byline: people led, budget held, share of pipeline moved, a library cut back, a review workflow built, freelance spend reduced. Each bullet pairs the number with the editorial decision behind it. The earlier role keeps one line, and the degree closes the page.

Typical titles: Head of content, Director of content, Content marketing lead

04Summary

Weak

Experienced content writer with excellent communication skills, a passion for storytelling and a proven track record of producing engaging content across a variety of industries.

Strong

Senior content writer with five years in B2B software, owning the editorial calendar and a bench of 6 freelancers. Took organic sessions from 46,000 to 214,000 a month and blog-sourced pipeline to $4.3M a year.

What was owned, who was commissioned, and two numbers a content lead can look up. It frames the writer as someone who decides what gets published rather than someone who fills a queue. The weak version is the sentence hiring managers say they see on nearly every writing resume.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Wrote 20 blog articles per month on a range of topics while following SEO best practices and collaborating with the marketing team on content strategy.

Strong

  • Ranked 61 articles in the top three results for their target term, including 9 of the 12 highest-value commercial terms.

A ranking count, and the commercial terms separated out from the easy ones. An editor can ask which twelve terms those were and what the other three did. The weak bullet gives a volume everyone has, follows it with a phrase that means nothing on its own, and would sit on any writing resume unchanged.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Output volume with no outcome attached

Fix: Twenty articles a month appears on nearly every content resume, so it separates nothing. Follow the volume with what it produced: sessions grown, articles ranked on the first page, leads or pipeline from the blog, referring domains earned.

  2. No link to the writing itself

Fix: Editors open the clips before they read the resume. Link six to ten pieces, not everything, and give each two or three sentences on who it was for, what it was meant to do and whether it did it. A portfolio without that context is just a reading list.

  3. Silence on how you work with AI tools

Fix: Postings now ask directly, and saying nothing reads as avoidance. Write the working method instead: pieces drafted with an assistant, how sources are checked, who edits before publication, and any editorial standard you wrote for the team.

  4. Search work described as best practices

Fix: Followed SEO best practices tells an editor nothing about what you can do. Name the work: keyword research against a cluster plan, briefs written, internal linking, the terms you targeted, the rankings you got and the ones you did not.

  5. Editing and commissioning left off

Fix: Most content jobs above the first rung are partly editorial. If you have briefed freelancers, run a calendar, written a style guide or edited other people's drafts, put it on the page with counts, because that is what promotes a writer.

08Format and template

Standard headings and a header that carries a link to the clips. Content teams read the portfolio first, so the resume's job is to give context and numbers rather than to demonstrate design. Keep the prose tight, since a wordy resume from a writer is read as a sample. This example uses Red & Gray Modern. The same content works in Standard, Beige Border and Warm Classic.

09Questions content writers ask

What goes in a content writer's portfolio?

Six to ten of your strongest and most relevant pieces, not everything you have published. Give each one two or three sentences saying who it was for, what it was meant to do and what happened: the term it targeted, the traffic it earned, the leads it produced. Editors are trying to work out whether you understood the assignment, not whether you can write a sentence, and the note beside the clip is what answers that.

Which numbers can a content writer actually claim?

Publishing volume with a word range, organic sessions with a baseline and a period, articles ranked in the top three or on the first page against the number written, referring domains earned, leads or pipeline attributed to content, and revision or turnaround figures if you improved them. Name the analytics you pulled them from. Traffic moves for reasons other than writing, so pairing a traffic number with a ranking count makes the claim harder to argue with.

How should I handle AI writing tools on my resume?

Directly, because postings now ask. Say what you use them for and what you do not: drafting and outlining against a brief, then fact-checking, source logging, interviews and the expertise layer a model cannot supply. If you wrote your team's editorial standard for assisted drafting, that is a strong bullet. The writers in demand are the ones who can set and hold an editorial line, not the ones who produce the most words.

Do I need certifications to be a content writer?

No. CareerOneStop lists exactly one certification for this occupation and no state licenses it, so nothing on a resume here is a gate. Platform certificates in analytics or SEO tools are cheap and mildly useful for a junior resume, but clips and numbers do all the work. Spend the effort on the portfolio and on getting a byline in a publication your target employer reads.

How do I write a content resume if most of my work was freelance?

As a single role with your own name as the employer, the dates unbroken, and the clients grouped underneath. About two thirds of writers and authors are self-employed, so no editor will find it odd. Give the volume, the sectors, the retained clients and the outcomes you can verify, and be clear about what you owned versus what you delivered to a brief. Unexplained gaps read worse than freelance work does.

How long should a content writer resume be?

One page. In this field the resume is itself a writing sample, so length is read as judgment, and the portfolio carries what a second page would. Even nine years fits once earlier roles collapse to a line holding their traffic figure. Cut the topic lists first, keep the counts, and never let the resume run longer than the best piece in your portfolio.
