Technical writer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three technical writer resumes following one writer from laboratory equipment manuals to leading a payments platform's developer docs, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each counts what a documentation manager checks: docs shipped, tickets prevented, review time and tools.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Docs type, audience and workflow

Technical writer, API documentation, docs-as-code. Postings for developer documentation this year ask for Git and Markdown fluency, and the headline answers that before a reviewer opens the portfolio.

  2. 2

AI drafts checked against the spec

Checks AI first drafts against the OpenAPI spec before anything ships. Postings read for this page ask writers to fact-check generated content, and naming the source of truth shows how it is done.

  3. 3

A reference generated from the spec

A reference for 140 endpoints generated from OpenAPI and published with Docusaurus. API documentation roles ask for spec-driven reference, and the endpoint count gives the scale of what this writer owns.

  4. 4

    Tickets cut by choosing pages

Integration tickets down 27% after rewriting the 12 most-viewed troubleshooting pages from ticket data. Deciding which published material needs revision is a top task for the occupation, and ticket data is the evidence.

  5. 5

Style checks on every pull request

Vale checks on every Git pull request across 1,100 Markdown pages, catching 2,400 issues before review. Writing to set standards of style and terminology is the occupation's highest-rated task, and this automates it.

  6. 6

    Release notes on release day

Release notes for 48 biweekly releases, each published on release day with input from six teams. Notes that arrive late go unread, and a release-day record is what a product team values most.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two years of manufacturing documentation in four counted bullets: manuals rebuilt as reusable topics with the translation savings, procedures written by watching technicians, change orders released on time, and visuals that replaced text-only steps. The internship keeps one line.

Typical titles: Associate technical writer, Documentation specialist, Junior technical writer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Five years, the last three on API documentation, in the units a docs manager weighs: a reference generated from the spec, support tickets cut, time to first API call, style checks automated, AI drafts fact-checked and release notes on release day. The manufacturing role keeps one line.

Typical titles: Technical writer, API technical writer, Developer documentation writer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Leading the docs replaces writing every page: four writers across six product areas, 1,800 pages consolidated with no broken links, an AI-assisted pipeline with a writer approving every change, support tickets cut and search success measured. The two earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Lead technical writer, Senior technical writer, Documentation manager

04Summary

Weak

Detail-oriented technical writer with excellent communication skills and a passion for turning complex information into clear, user-friendly documentation.

Strong

Technical writer with five years in documentation, the last three on API docs for a payments platform. Owns the REST API reference and 9 integration guides in a docs-as-code workflow and cut integration support tickets 27%.

A documentation manager reads for the kind of docs you write, the audience and the tools before anything else. The strong version names API docs, developers and docs-as-code, then gives a result. The weak version restates the job's definition, which every applicant can claim.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for creating and updating user documentation and working with engineers to make sure it was accurate.

Strong

  • Reduced integration support tickets 27% in 2025 by rewriting the 12 most-viewed troubleshooting pages from ticket data.

Analyzing developments to decide which published material needs revising is one of the occupation's highest-rated tasks. The strong bullet shows how the pages were chosen, how many there were, and what changed for the support team. A documentation manager can check a ticket count against the support queue, while the weak bullet only says that documents existed.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Percentages with no baseline

Fix: Competitor examples promise production time cut by a percentage with nothing to measure against. Say what you counted: pages, procedures, tickets, release days or review comments. Give the before and after where you have them, and name the source, such as ticket data.

  2. A typo on a writing resume

Fix: Hiring managers read a technical writer's resume as the first writing sample, and a misspelling or a wrong tool name suggests carelessness. Run a style checker, read it aloud, and check every product name, link and version number against the source.

  3. Tools listed but never used

Fix: A skills section naming Flare, DITA, OpenAPI and more, none of them in the bullets, reads as padding. Name each tool inside the bullet where you used it, and cut any you could not discuss in an interview.

  4. Samples you have no right to share

Fix: Write the Docs warns never to include writing you lack the rights to, or unreleased features and internal links. Get written permission, or write an original sample in the same format, and keep each one short, with a note on your process.

  5. AI work left off the page

Fix: Postings this year ask writers to review and fact-check AI-generated drafts and to build the checks around them. If you do, say what you reviewed, against which source, and how many errors you caught. That judgment is what employers are hiring for.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills. Name the kind of documentation and its audience in your headline, put each tool inside the bullet where you used it, and give counts of pages, procedures, releases and tickets as text. Link a short portfolio in the header with samples you have the right to share, and proofread the resume as your first writing sample.

09Questions technical writers ask

Do technical writers need a degree?

Usually, though not always. BLS says employers generally prefer a bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism or a related field, and some jobs require knowledge of a technical field such as engineering or computer and information technology. O*NET's respondents were split: 33 percent said a new hire needs a bachelor's degree and 35 percent an associate degree. Some writers start as specialists in a technical field and move into documentation.

How much do technical writers make?

The May 2025 median for technical writers was $90,390, with the lowest tenth under $57,440 and the highest tenth over $145,270. By industry, administrative and support services paid a median $99,280, government $95,480, professional, scientific and technical services $94,520, information $86,400 and manufacturing $82,860. Writers who can document APIs in a docs-as-code workflow can apply for developer documentation roles as well as manuals.

Will AI replace technical writers?

BLS projects employment of technical writers to grow 1 percent from 2025 to 2035 and says growth may be slowed by AI tools that make these workers more productive. About 3,200 openings are still projected each year. Postings read for this page ask writers to fact-check AI drafts, maintain style rules and build automated checks, so show that judgment on your resume rather than leaving AI out.

Is there a certification for technical writers?

None is required. BLS says some associations offer certification and that it can make candidates more attractive, though it is not mandatory. CareerOneStop lists only 3 certifications for the occupation, for grant professionals, medical publication professionals and resume writers, and no license. The society that ran the best-known general credential has closed, so a portfolio and tools shown in your bullets carry more weight.

What should a technical writer include in a portfolio?

Short samples that match the jobs you want, each with a note on how you made it and who reviewed it, according to Write the Docs' hiring guide. For API roles, show requests, responses and a reference built from an OpenAPI file. Never include documents you do not have the rights to, or unreleased features and internal links. If your work is proprietary, write an original sample in the same format.
