What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Specialism stated, not implied

Conversion copywriter, with the surfaces named. Copywriting splits into brand work and conversion work and they are hired differently, so a headline that picks one is doing the sorting for the reader.

  2. 2

    Business size behind the rate

Checkout conversion from 2.4% to 3.6% on a brand doing $48M a year. A rate means nothing without the revenue it sits on, and the two together tell a hiring manager what the rewrite was worth.

  3. 3

    Surfaces owned, listed once

Forty landing pages, a nine-flow email program and SMS. Ownership of the whole set is what separates a conversion copywriter from a writer handed a brief, and it is the first bullet for that reason.

  4. 4

    Test log including the losses

Ninety-six tests at a 34% win rate, with every losing variant written down. Two thirds of tests fail for everyone, and a writer who keeps the failures is describing a practice rather than a lucky year.

  5. 5

Interviews as the source of copy

Forty-five customer interviews turned into a message hierarchy the brand still sells from. Postings ask for customer research, objections and positioning, and this is what having done it looks like.

  6. 6

    Agency years kept as process

The creative brief rewritten so every job arrives with an audience, an objection and a goal. Agency time is usually listed as brands. Written as the process left behind, it reads as seniority beginning.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The headline names the formats and the brand count, and the header carries the portfolio link. The summary gives a win rate rather than a win. Each bullet holds a shipping volume, a test count, a rate with a baseline or an artifact the team kept, and the internship stays because it produced both.

Typical titles: Junior copywriter, Copywriter, Associate copywriter

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline picks a specialism and names the surfaces. The current role opens with what is owned, then the conversion rate against the revenue it sits on, the test log with its win rate, revenue per send and the customer interviews. The agency years keep three lines, one of them a process still in use.

Typical titles: Conversion copywriter, Senior copywriter, Digital copywriter

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces the page: brands whose voice is owned, writers led, a funnel rate moved, plain-language work with a support result, review time cut and a test log kept. Each bullet pairs the number with the decision behind it. The retail years keep one line, and the degree closes the page.

Typical titles: Lead copywriter, Associate creative director, Copy chief

04Summary

Weak

Creative copywriter with a flair for language and a passion for crafting compelling stories that connect brands with their audiences and drive engagement.

Strong

Conversion copywriter with five years across agency and direct-to-consumer retail, owning landing pages, email and SMS for a brand doing $48M a year. Lifted checkout conversion from 2.4% to 3.6% across 9 rewritten pages.

Specialism, surfaces owned, the size of the business and a conversion rate with a baseline. A hiring manager gets the link and a number a test moved without scrolling, which is what they say they look for. The weak version could sit above any copywriter's portfolio and proves nothing about this one.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Wrote compelling copy for a variety of digital channels including email, social media and web, working closely with designers to deliver on-brand creative.

Strong

  • Ran 96 A/B tests in two years with a 34% win rate, and documented every losing variant in a shared test log.

A test count, an honest win rate and the practice behind it. An interviewer can ask what the biggest loss taught the team. The weak bullet lists channels, claims the copy was compelling, and describes what every copywriter in the building does on any given Tuesday.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Winning tests reported without the denominator

Fix: Anyone can name three winners. A creative director who tests for a living will ask how many you ran, so give the ratio: 14 of 38 headline tests won, or 96 tests at a 34% win rate. The honest number reads as practice rather than luck.

  2. No portfolio link above the fold

Fix: Copy is judged by reading it. Put the link in the header beside the contact details, lead the portfolio with five to ten projects, and for each give the client or context, what you actually wrote, and the result where you have one.

  3. Channels listed instead of surfaces owned

Fix: Wrote for email, social and web describes everyone. Say what was yours end to end: 40 landing pages, a nine-flow email program, the SMS calendar, the voice guide. Ownership is what separates a copywriter from a person handed briefs.

  4. A conversion rate with nothing behind it

Fix: A lift from 2.4% to 3.6% means nothing until a reader knows the traffic or the revenue underneath. Give the business size or the added revenue, name the pages, and say how long the test ran and whether it reached significance.

  5. Research left out of a conversion resume

Fix: Postings for this work ask about customer research, objections and positioning, and they judge on that rather than on style. Put the interviews, the review mining, the objection bank or the message hierarchy on the page with counts.

08Format and template

Standard headings and a header carrying the portfolio link beside the contact details. The resume is a writing sample here, so tight prose and short bullets are themselves evidence, and a designed template is fine as long as the numbers stay in text rather than in rating bars. This example uses Red & Gray Modern. The same content works in Standard, Pink Accent and Warm Classic.

09Questions copywriters ask

What should a copywriter put in a portfolio?

Five to ten projects, led by the strongest. For each, give the client or the context, say exactly what you wrote — headlines, the landing page, the full funnel — and add the result where you have one: click-through lift, conversion rate, revenue, open rate. Show range across long-form, email, landing pages and ads, since creative directors are checking whether you can move between them. Anonymise a client if you have to rather than leaving the work out.

Which numbers can a copywriter actually claim?

The ones from tests you ran: variants shipped, tests run and won, click-through and open rates with baselines, conversion rate on pages you rewrote, revenue per send, and revenue attributed to a page or a flow. Give the denominator with the wins. If a number is not available, use scope instead — pieces shipped a week, brands written for, word-count ranges — which is honest and still tells a reader what you can carry.

How is a copywriter resume different from a content writer's?

They are measured on different things, even though the federal data counts them as one occupation. A content writer is read on published volume, rankings and organic traffic. A copywriter is read on tests, conversion rate and revenue per send, and on whether they own a brand's voice. Pick the one you are applying for and build the summary and the first three bullets around its numbers, because the two hiring managers are scanning for different words.

Do I need an advertising degree to be a copywriter?

No. The federal data lists no license and a single certification for the whole occupation, so nothing here is a gate. Portfolio schools and advertising degrees help early because they produce a book, but so does agency or in-house work, and so does a self-directed portfolio built on real briefs. After the first job almost nobody asks, and the portfolio is doing the work the degree would have done.

How do I show brand voice work on a resume?

As an artifact with a scope rather than as an adjective. Say how many brands you held the voice for, whether you wrote the guide, who else writes from it, and what changed when it landed: review rounds cut, consistency across channels, a rewrite of existing material. Brand work is harder to put a number on than conversion work, so the count of people writing from your guide is often the clearest evidence available.

How long should a copywriter resume be?

One page, and treat the length as part of the audition. A copywriter who cannot cut their own resume is making an argument against themselves, and the portfolio carries everything a second page would. Even nine years fits once earlier roles collapse to a line holding their best number. Cut the channel lists first and keep the tests, the rates and the artifacts.
