What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

Headline names the kind of work

Brand systems and packaging, studio and in-house, in one line. Studio postings are written around the kind of work, so a headline that names it routes the portfolio to the right creative director before the summary starts.

  2. 2

    Clients, launches and billings

Six retained clients, $1.1 million in billings and 14 identities to launch. At senior level a studio measures a designer by the accounts they hold and the work that shipped, and the summary gives all three in two lines.

  3. 3

Packaging counted in SKUs and reprints

Thirty-eight SKUs, dielines through press checks, 22,000 units a year and a 0.4% reprint rate. The reprint rate is the number a client's operations team feels, and it proves the production craft behind the pretty work.

  4. 4

Revision rounds cut with the method

From 4 rounds to 2 by presenting 3 directions with rationale at the first review. Creative directors say the ability to explain a decision separates juniors from seniors, and this line shows it as a working habit.

  5. 5

Direction of juniors, with a cadence

Two junior designers and a freelance illustrator, reviews twice a week. It is the first leadership line on the page, and the cadence makes it a practice rather than a claim, which is what an art director posting will ask about.

  6. 6

    Motion added to the toolset

After Effects joins the print and brand tools, and motion graphics sits in the craft list. Postings for senior in-house and studio roles now ask for motion beside print, and the sidebar answers before the interview.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The portfolio link leads, in the header. The first year in-house carries output per month, revision rounds, a print run and one campaign metric, each with a baseline. The internship reads as deliverables rather than a semester, and the sidebar names tools by product with a dated Adobe certification beside them.

Typical titles: Graphic designer, Junior graphic designer, Production designer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline names the specialty and the two settings. The studio role opens with the clients and billings held, then launches, SKUs, reprint rate and revision rounds, each with a baseline or a denominator. The in-house years keep three lines with their own numbers, and the sidebar adds motion to the tools.

Typical titles: Senior graphic designer, Brand designer, Visual designer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces craft: team size, branches, templates, agency dollars and campaign conversion, each with the routine behind it. The studio years shrink to one line, the first job keeps its dates, and the sidebar pairs asset management and budgeting with the creative tools on one sheet.

Typical titles: Design lead, Art director, Creative manager

04Summary

Weak

Creative and detail-oriented graphic designer with a passion for visual storytelling and a proven ability to deliver stunning designs that elevate brands.

Strong

Senior graphic designer with five years across in-house and studio work, the last three at a 12-person brand studio. Leads brand systems and packaging for 6 retained clients, ran 14 identity projects to launch, and manages a 22,000-unit-a-year print program with a 0.4% reprint rate.

The setting, the accounts held, the launches and a production number a client can feel. A creative director can check every one of them against the portfolio and a reference. The weak version could open any designer's resume and says nothing the portfolio does not already have to prove.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Created engaging visual content for print and digital channels while maintaining brand consistency across all deliverables.

Strong

  • Designed 38 packaging SKUs for a regional food brand, dielines through press checks, with a 0.4% reprint rate across 22,000 units a year.

A count, the part of the process owned, a yearly volume and a quality rate a client feels. An interviewer can ask what went wrong on the reprints, and the candidate can answer from the job. The weak bullet is the posting itself and could sit on any designer's resume in any industry unchanged.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. No portfolio link, or one buried at the bottom

Fix: Employers hire designers from the work. Put the URL in the header beside your email, make sure it opens on a phone, and match the case studies to the kind of work the posting describes. A resume without a link is a resume that gets skipped.

  2. Adjectives where the numbers should be

Fix: Creative, passionate and detail-oriented are on every design resume. Count what shipped: assets a month, pages and copies in a print run, SKUs, identities launched, revision rounds, templates adopted. Design work has more numbers than designers think.

  3. Adobe Creative Suite as one line

Fix: Name the products: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Figma, After Effects, Canva. Postings list them one by one, and O*NET's data for the occupation marks each as in demand. Then show the ones that matter inside a bullet next to a deliverable.

  4. Print production left off because it feels unglamorous

Fix: In-house postings list print production first. A run size, a press check and a reprint or correction rate prove you can take a file to the printer and get it back right, which is the part of the job that costs money when it goes wrong.

  5. Metrics borrowed from marketing without a baseline

Fix: Increased engagement by 300% means nothing without the starting number and the period. Write the before and after and the count: click-through from 2.1% to 3.4% over 12 sends. One honest metric beats a page of round numbers.

08Format and template

Two columns suit this role when the sidebar holds the tools and credentials and the main column carries the summary, the work and the education, which is how Orange Creative lays it out. A creative director reads the header for the portfolio link, then the work, then the tools. Keep the layout as real text rather than exported artwork, and let the portfolio carry the visual case. The same content works in Standard, Pink Accent and Red & Gray Modern. Whichever you choose, the portfolio URL stays in the header and the tools stay product by product.

09Questions graphic designers ask

Where does the portfolio link go on a graphic designer resume?

In the header, beside your email and phone, as a short URL that works on a phone. Employers rely on portfolios to make hiring decisions, and creative directors say they open the work before they read the resume. Choose four to eight case studies that match the posting, and put the strongest first. If the posting asks for a PDF portfolio as well, name the file with your name and keep it under the size limit the application system states.

What numbers can a graphic designer put on a resume?

More than most designers think. Output: assets a month, pages, print runs, SKUs, templates. Process: revision rounds, on-time delivery, first-pass approvals, press corrections. Results: click-through, conversion, adoption of a template kit, audit findings before and after a brand rollout, agency spend saved. Give each one its baseline and its period, and pick the ones you can explain in an interview. The mid-level example carries a 0.4% reprint rate across 22,000 units because that is a number a client feels.

How do I write a graphic designer resume with no professional experience?

Treat the degree, the internship and any shipped project as work. Give the internship deliverables, not tasks: identities supported, pages produced, print jobs accepted first pass. Give a volunteer or student project the same treatment, with a scale and a link. Recruiters say they expect junior portfolios to be raw and look for ideas, curiosity and the ability to explain a decision, so the case studies should show the thinking. Postings for junior roles ask for one to three years and a strong portfolio, so the work does most of the talking.

Should I list software certifications like Adobe Certified Professional?

As one dated line, yes, and never in place of the work. CareerOneStop lists 15 certifications for the occupation and all of them are software credentials from Adobe or Tosa. None is required by postings, so a certificate confirms a tool rather than qualifying you. List it under the tools it covers, keep the date, and let the print runs and launches above it carry the case.

Do graphic designers need motion or video skills now?

Increasingly, for in-house roles. Postings from marketing teams ask for animated social assets, email motion and short video edits beside print, and O*NET's postings data marks After Effects as in demand for the occupation. You do not need to be a motion designer, but a resume that shows After Effects or Premiere in the tools and one motion deliverable in a bullet clears the screen that a print-only resume can fail. The senior example brought motion in-house and counts it in the agency spend it saved.

How long should a graphic designer resume be?

One page, with the portfolio carrying everything else. Creative directors read the resume for the setting, the kind of work, the tools and the numbers, then judge the craft from the portfolio. The design-lead example holds nine years on one sheet by giving earlier roles one line each. Keep the resume itself plain and readable, as real text rather than a designed artifact, so it survives an application system and prints cleanly.
