What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Specialty and tools up top

Motion designer, branded content and social video, After Effects and Cinema 4D. The tools named are the ones motion postings ask for most, and the specialty sets expectations for the reel.

  2. 2

    Campaigns and assets counted

Forty branded campaigns a year and 620 assets in 2025. Participating in production of multimedia campaigns is a core task, and the volume shows this designer carries real campaign load.

  3. 3

    An identity editors use daily

An animated identity for three brands, with 140 After Effects, Lottie and Rive templates editors use daily. Templates built for others are a system, and daily use proves the system works.

  4. 4

AI directed, then refined by hand

Pitch frames from three days to one by directing AI tools and refining every frame by hand. Brand postings this year ask motion designers to judge AI output, and this says where judgment stayed.

  5. 5

    Watch time moved by testing

Average watch time on sponsored video up 28% after testing opening hooks across 60 cuts. A tested result is rare on a motion resume, and it tells a media company the work performs.

  6. 6

    Freelancers kept on schedule

Eight freelance designers and 3D artists directed on peak campaigns, every delivery on schedule. Directing freelancers is what lead postings ask for, and this shows the step toward it.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two studio years in four counted bullets: pieces delivered with no missed deadlines, rigs that shortened cutdowns, pitches won with their value, and 3D renders that replaced shoots. The internship keeps one line with its average views, and the reel sits in the header.

Typical titles: Motion designer, Junior motion designer, Motion graphics artist

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years in the units a creative director weighs: campaigns and assets delivered, an animated identity with templates editors use, AI directed and refined by hand, watch time moved by testing, 3D scenes on a deadline, and freelancers kept on schedule. The studio role keeps one line.

Typical titles: Motion designer, Motion graphics designer, Brand motion designer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Leading the studio's motion replaces animating every frame: staff and freelancers across many campaigns, revenue grown by packaging motion, rules for AI in concept work, awarded campaigns with completion rates, and juniors promoted. The two earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Motion design lead, Senior motion designer, Motion design director

04Summary

Weak

Passionate and creative motion designer who brings ideas to life through stunning animation and has a strong eye for detail and storytelling.

Strong

Motion designer with six years in branded and social motion, the last four at a digital media company. Leads motion on 40 branded campaigns a year and built the animated identity used by 3 media brands.

A creative director reads for the kind of motion you make, for whom and at what volume before opening the reel. The strong version names branded and social motion, a media company, a campaign count and an identity system. The weak version praises its own taste, which the reel has to prove anyway.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Created engaging animations and motion graphics for social media and marketing campaigns.

Strong

  • Increased average watch time on sponsored social video 28% by testing opening hooks across 60 cuts in Premiere Pro.

Designing complex graphics and animation is the occupation's highest-rated task, but a hiring lead at a media company also wants to know the work performed. The strong bullet names the format, the metric, the method and the number of cuts tested. The weak bullet says the animations were engaging, which no one can check and every applicant for the role will also claim.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. No reel link on the page

Fix: Some media postings say applications without a portfolio or reel link will not be considered. Put the reel in the header, keep it short and led by your best work, and make sure the resume names the projects the reel shows.

  2. Famous brands and vague speed

Fix: Competitor samples drop a famous brand's launch into a bullet and claim work done faster than deadline. Name clients only if you can, and give speed as hours or days against a real baseline, such as cutdowns that went from days to hours.

  3. AI left out or hidden

Fix: Brand postings this year ask motion designers to direct and judge AI-generated work, and to explain in the portfolio where AI played a part. Say which steps you used it for, what you refined by hand, and the time it saved.

  4. Templates presented as craft

Fix: Motion designers quoted in the trade press warn that a reel strung together from templates is a big no-no. Building templates for others is valuable, so show it as a system with its users, and keep your own original pieces in the reel.

  5. Deliveries with no outcome

Fix: Pieces delivered is a start, but media and brand teams also want to know the work performed. Add watch time, completion or views where you have them, or the pitches won, and say how you tested what made the difference.

08Format and template

One page with your reel link in the header, then experience with counts of pieces, campaigns and deadlines, and results such as watch time or pitches won as text rather than inside images, since screening software reads only text. Group tools in the sidebar and name them again in the bullets where you used them. This example uses Orange Creative. The same content works in Standard, Pink Accent and Red & Gray Modern.

09Questions motion graphic designers ask

What is the difference between a motion graphic designer and an animator?

O*NET counts both under special effects artists and animators, and motion graphics artist is one of its sample titles. Most of the occupation's work is in film, games and visual effects, while motion designers usually animate brand, social and marketing work. The occupation's highest-rated task, designing complex graphics and animation, applies to both, so describe the formats and clients you work in.

How much do motion graphic designers make?

BLS reports pay for special effects artists and animators as a group: a median of $102,030 in May 2025, with the lowest tenth under $58,600 and the highest tenth over $177,110. Software publishers paid a median $127,670, computer systems design $103,390, motion picture and video $100,990 and advertising $86,290. About 63 percent of these workers are self-employed, where pay depends on day rates and clients.

Will AI replace motion designers?

BLS projects little or no change in employment from 2025 to 2035 and says some animation tasks can be done more quickly with AI, which may dampen demand, though about 4,200 openings a year remain. Brand postings read for this page ask motion designers to direct and judge AI output, so show where you used it and where your judgment changed the result.

Which software should a motion graphic designer list?

The tools your target postings name. O*NET's count of 2025 postings for the occupation names Adobe Photoshop in 49 percent, Illustrator in 43 and After Effects in 32, with Figma at 17. Motion postings read for this page also asked for Cinema 4D, Rive and Lottie for product and social work. List each in the sidebar, and name it again in the bullet where you used it.

How long should a motion design reel be?

Short. Motion designers and studio leads quoted by School of Motion and Creative Boom advise leading with your best work, cutting anything weaker, keeping your name on screen only briefly and avoiding template-built pieces. BLS says employers usually prefer candidates with a good portfolio and strong technical skills, so link the reel in your header and make every clip one you would be proud to be hired for.
