Video game developer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three video game developer resumes following one gameplay programmer from traversal code on a first console launch to leading a live-service co-op team, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each gives frame times on named hardware, shipped titles and systems built.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Specialty, engine and mode

Gameplay programmer, Unreal Engine 5, C++, online co-op. Studios post gameplay, rendering, networking and build roles separately, and the title tells a lead programmer which team this resume is for.

  2. 2

    Shipped titles counted up front

Six years and two shipped PC and console titles in the first sentence. Game credits are often incomplete, so the resume is where a hiring lead confirms what you actually shipped.

  3. 3

    Frame rate on named consoles

The combat system held 60 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series S at launch. Naming the hardware turns a performance claim into one a programmer can question in the interview.

  4. 4

    Netcode judged by player reports

Client-side prediction and lag compensation for four-player co-op, with missed-hit reports down 62%. Studio postings this year ask for exactly this replication work, and player reports measure it.

  5. 5

    Milliseconds off the game thread

Gameplay thread time from 9.4 ms to 5.1 ms by batching 240 AI actors. Modifying software to improve performance on new hardware is one of the developer's highest-rated tasks.

  6. 6

    Certification passed on first attempt

Three hundred ten bugs resolved before submission, and both console certifications passed the first time. A failed submission can push a launch date, so leads read this line closely.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two years on one shipped game in four counted bullets: a traversal system used across the levels, interactables designers can tune, a per-frame cost cut on named console hardware, and certification blockers fixed fast. The student game and a Unity certification show work outside the day job.

Typical titles: Gameplay programmer I, Junior gameplay programmer, Associate game programmer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years and two shipped titles in the units a lead programmer weighs: a combat system at a held frame rate, co-op netcode judged by player reports, thread time cut in milliseconds, tuning handed to designers, nightly tests and a clean first certification pass. The junior role keeps one line.

Typical titles: Gameplay programmer, Game programmer, Gameplay engineer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Leading a team replaces single features: seven engineers and nine seasons shipped on schedule, replication rebuilt to cut server cost, frame budgets enforced every night, a live event framework that shortened lead time, and juniors promoted. The two earlier roles keep one line each, with their shipped titles.

Typical titles: Lead gameplay programmer, Senior gameplay engineer, Gameplay team lead

04Summary

Weak

Passionate game developer who loves creating fun and immersive experiences, with strong skills in C++, Unity and Unreal Engine.

Strong

Gameplay programmer with six years on Unreal Engine and 2 shipped PC and console titles. Built the melee combat and the co-op netcode for Gloamreach and held 60 fps on Xbox Series S.

A lead programmer reads for shipped titles, the systems you built and the hardware you held a frame rate on. The strong version gives all three. The weak version names two engines and a passion, which every applicant claims and nobody can check.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Worked on optimization and performance improvements for the game's AI systems to make the game run faster.

Strong

  • Reduced gameplay thread time from 9.4 ms to 5.1 ms on Xbox Series S by batching 240 AI actors, profiled in Unreal Insights.

Modifying software to adapt it to new hardware and improve performance is one of the highest-rated software developer tasks, and in games it is measured in milliseconds per frame on a named console. The strong bullet gives the before and after, the hardware, the method and the tool. Game programmers who hire say a vague optimization claim tells them nothing.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Optimized performance, with no numbers

Fix: Game programmers who hire say a claim like basic memory optimization is meaningless. Give the frame time before and after, the hardware and how you found the cost. Nine milliseconds down to five on an Xbox Series S is a claim a lead can test in the interview.

  2. A long list of engines and languages

Fix: Hiring programmers skip resumes that spend their space on languages and well-known algorithms. Name your engine and main language once, then show what you built with them: the system, the game it shipped in and the constraint you worked under.

  3. Shipped titles left unnamed

Fix: The industry's own survey found credits are often opaque or missing, especially for people who leave before launch. Your resume is the record. Name each shipped or released title, its platforms and the systems you owned, including student games released publicly.

  4. The portfolio link carrying everything

Fix: A hiring programmer working through a full inbox assumes the link will not be clicked. Put the substance on the page: what the system does, the result and the hardware. The link is for the interview, after the resume has already earned it.

  5. One resume for every programming team

Fix: A rendering resume sent to a Unity gameplay team is wasted, and studios post gameplay, rendering, networking and build roles separately. Write a version for each kind of team, with the matching engine, systems and numbers at the top.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, projects, education, skills, certifications. Put your specialty and engine in the headline, name each shipped title in the bullets with its platforms, and give performance as frame times or frame rates on the hardware you measured. A released student game goes under projects with its link. Keep each number as text, not an image.

09Questions video game developers ask

Do you need a degree to be a video game developer?

Most studios expect one. BLS counts game programmers among software developers, who typically need a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field, and O*NET places the occupation in Job Zone Four, where 85 percent of respondents said a new hire needs a bachelor's. Postings read for this page also asked for shipped games or substantial portfolio work, so list released projects next to the degree.

How much do video game developers make?

BLS has no separate figure for game developers, so the closest is software developers: a median of $135,980 in May 2025, with the lowest tenth under $82,460 and the highest tenth over $214,670. Software publishers paid the highest industry median, $164,550. Pay at a given studio depends on the platform, the specialty and the city, so compare offers against postings for the same role.

Should a game programmer learn Unreal Engine or Unity?

Match the studios you apply to. Unreal Engine code is mostly C++ and Unity code is C#, and O*NET's count of 2025 postings for video game designers names C++ in 12 percent and C# in 8. CareerOneStop lists Unity Technologies programmer certifications and Epic Games' Unreal Engine: 3D Fundamentals. Put the engine your target team uses in your headline and show a shipped system built with it.

What is the difference between a game developer and a game designer?

O*NET treats them as separate occupations. Video game designers design core features, specify game mechanics, story lines and character biographies, and maintain design documentation, with titles like level designer and game designer. Game programmers are counted among software developers and write the code that makes those designs run. On a resume, a programmer's bullets show systems built, frame times and bugs fixed, not mechanics proposed.

Should a game programmer resume include a portfolio link?

Yes, but do not rely on it. Game programmers who hire say they assume the link will not be clicked, so the resume must stand on its own: name the system, the game, the result and the hardware in each bullet. Use the link for released projects, code samples or short videos of the feature running, and list a student game under projects with its link.
