Computer programmer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three computer programmer resumes following one programmer analyst from SAS reports to leading a COBOL modernization, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each one counts what a programming manager checks: languages, deadlines met, batch windows, defects and legacy code documented.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

Legacy and modern side by side

Programmer analyst, COBOL batch, SAS and SQL, Medicaid claims. Public sector postings this year ask for COBOL alongside SQL and newer languages, and the headline shows both.

  2. 2

    Format changes without rejections

Three state format changes with rejection rates held under 0.5%. Adapting programs to new requirements is one of the highest-rated tasks, and a state's rejection rate is its scorecard.

  3. 3

    Old reports moved to Python

Nine legacy SAS reports rewritten in Python, from four hours to 25 minutes. Python is the third most named language in programmer postings, and the runtime shows the move paid.

  4. 4

    Batch with an on-time rate

Thirty-eight COBOL and JCL programs processing 1.1M claims a month, 99.8% on time. Maintaining programs that handle specific jobs is a core task, and the rate shows the batch is trusted.

  5. 5

    Quality measures automated

Twenty-two SAS and SQL programs for quality measures, cutting manual chart pulls 35%. Health plan postings ask programmers for reporting that saves clinical staff time.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two years in four counted bullets: SAS programs delivered on a monthly deadline, a run cut from nine hours to two, defects closed with their causes, and legacy COBOL documented field by field. The internship keeps one line, and a SAS certification sits at the foot.

Typical titles: Programmer analyst I, Junior programmer, SAS programmer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years of programming in the units a manager weighs: COBOL batch with its on-time rate, extracts adapted to state changes with rejections held down, quality measures automated, legacy reports moved to Python, and analysts trained. The contractor role keeps one line, and two SAS certifications sit beneath.

Typical titles: Programmer analyst, Application programmer analyst, COBOL programmer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Team leadership replaces individual programs: five programmers and 220 programs across four languages, a COBOL to Java migration proven on outputs, a batch window shortened by retiring jobs, three years without penalties, and documentation that halved ramp-up. The earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Lead programmer analyst, Senior programmer analyst, Programming team lead

04Summary

Weak

Experienced computer programmer skilled in various programming languages, with a passion for writing clean code and a strong attention to detail.

Strong

Programmer analyst with six years in Medicaid data, the last four at a managed-care plan with 640,000 members. Maintains the COBOL and JCL batch that processes 1.1M claims a month and moved 9 legacy SAS reports to Python.

A programming manager reads the languages, the domain and the systems you keep running before anything else. The strong version names all three with volumes. The weak version says various languages, which tells a reviewer nothing about whether you can work on their code.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for writing, testing and maintaining programs and fixing bugs as they were reported by users and the testing team.

Strong

  • Maintained 38 COBOL and JCL batch programs for claims adjudication, with 99.8% of 1.1M monthly claims processed on time.

Writing, updating and maintaining programs that handle specific jobs is a core task for computer programmers, and on legacy systems the job is keeping them running. The strong bullet names the languages, the number of programs, the monthly volume and the on-time rate. A manager can check that rate, while the weak bullet restates the job description.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Skilled in various languages

Fix: Hiring managers for programmer roles want every language in one skills section, with your level in each. Then show each in a bullet: what you wrote, for which system and at what volume. A language that appears only in the skills list reads as a course, not a job.

  2. Legacy work hidden or apologized for

Fix: Postings this year still ask for COBOL, JCL and mainframe data alongside newer languages, because states and health plans run on them. If you maintain legacy code, put it in the headline with its volume, and show any documentation or modernization you added.

  3. No deadline, volume or on-time rate

Fix: Programs exist to produce something on schedule: reports by a business day, claims by a nightly cutoff, files by a state deadline. Say what your programs produced, how much, and how often they finished on time. It is the number a programming manager trusts.

  4. See resume in a government application

Fix: Some county postings score candidates on their supplemental answers alone and warn that answering see resume may count as no answer. Write each response in full, with the same programs and numbers as your resume, and send transcripts when a state asks for them.

  5. Twenty years of detail on equal footing

Fix: Statistical programming hiring managers say they rarely read the detail of much older roles and prefer a short resume. Keep recent roles detailed and give older ones a single line with their best number, as the senior example does.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills, certifications. Put your main languages and your domain in the headline, list every language once in the skills section, and keep volumes, deadlines, run times and defect counts as text in the bullets. List certifications with their year, and keep sample code ready that is yours to share.

09Questions computer programmers ask

Is computer programming a dying career?

It is shrinking, not disappearing. The handbook projects employment of computer programmers to fall 7 percent from 2025 to 2035 as AI automates routine programming, yet about 4,400 openings remain each year. The jobs that stay lean on systems few people can maintain, such as COBOL batch and statistical reporting, and on the judgment to check what automated tools produce.

What is the difference between a computer programmer and a software developer?

BLS and O*NET count them separately. O*NET describes programmers as creating, modifying and testing the code and scripts that let applications run, working from specifications drawn up by software developers and others. On a resume, a programmer's bullets show programs written, fixed and kept running on deadline, while a developer's show systems designed. Programmer analyst is one of the most reported titles.

How much do computer programmers make?

The May 2025 median for computer programmers was $100,390, with the lowest tenth under $57,710 and the highest tenth over $160,460. Industry moves it: software publishers paid a median $111,710, finance and insurance $107,620, manufacturing $99,850 and computer systems design $98,360. Government programmer analyst postings read for this page ranged widely by state and city.

Which programming languages should a computer programmer list?

The ones employers ask for in your field, with a level for each. In O*NET's count of 2025 postings for computer programmers, SQL appears in 25 percent, SAS in 15, Python in 13, JavaScript and C# in 12 each and Java in 10. Health, insurance and public sector roles also ask for COBOL and mainframe databases, which postings name less often but rarely do without.

Are programming certifications worth it?

Sometimes. The handbook says some companies require programmers to be certified in the products they use, and CareerOneStop lists 57 certifications for the occupation, including SAS's Base and Advanced Programmer credentials. In SAS-heavy fields such as health data and clinical reporting they are common on resumes. Elsewhere, list one only if your target postings mention it, and put it below your experience.
