Statistician resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three statistician resumes following one survey statistician from weighting state health surveys to leading sampling for federal surveys, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each counts what a methods lead checks: designs, weights, precision, error rates and software.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

Specialty and data in the title

Survey statistician, sample design and weighting, national household surveys. Developing sampling techniques and weighting raw data are both core tasks, and the headline names the scale of the surveys.

  2. 2

    Samples that met precision targets

Stratified multistage samples for three national surveys, meeting every precision target. Planning data collection and the sizes of sample groups is a listed task, and the targets are how sponsors judge it.

  3. 3

    Design effect cut by modeling

The design effect from weighting cut 18% with logistic regression propensity models. Evaluating methods for efficiency is a top-rated task, and a smaller design effect means more precision per completed interview.

  4. 4

    Imputation documented in each file

Imputation for 220 items, with item nonresponse documented in every public-use file. Users of public data need to know what was imputed, and documenting it is part of evaluating sources for limitations.

  5. 5

    County estimates with their CVs

Small area estimates for 3,100 counties with median CVs cut from 41% to 19%. A coefficient of variation is the precision measure a reviewer checks first, and both numbers are on the line.

  6. 6

    Methods written for sponsors

Methodology reports for federal sponsors and conference proceedings papers. Reporting results in peer-reviewed papers and technical manuals is a core task, and the page count shows it was steady work.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Both degrees lead, then two years of survey statistics in four counted bullets: weights checked against census margins, variance estimates for published tables with no errata, quality checks that shortened cleaning, and a slow weighting run rebuilt in R. The internship keeps one line, and GStat sits at the foot.

Typical titles: Statistician I, Statistical analyst, Junior survey statistician

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years in the units a survey methods lead weighs: sample designs that met their precision targets, a design effect cut by better nonresponse modeling, items imputed and documented, county estimates with their CVs, disclosure review automated and methods written up. The analyst role keeps one line.

Typical titles: Survey statistician, Mathematical statistician, Statistician

  • Senior

    7+ years

Leading the methods replaces running them: six statisticians on five federal surveys, a move to address-based web-first designs priced per complete, nonresponse bias analyses sponsors adopted, contract renewals won on the methods section, and juniors accredited. The two earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Senior survey statistician, Lead statistician, Sampling statistician

04Summary

Weak

Results-driven statistician with strong analytical skills and expertise in statistical modeling, data analysis and data visualization.

Strong

Survey statistician with an MS in Statistics and six years in survey methodology, the last four designing samples and weights for federal household and health surveys. Leads weighting for 3 recurring national surveys.

A survey methods lead reads for the kind of statistics you practice, the data you work with and the scale before anything else. The strong version names sampling and weighting, federal surveys and how many. The weak version could describe any data role.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Performed statistical analysis and modeling on survey data to provide insights and recommendations to stakeholders across the organization.

Strong

  • Reduced the design effect from weighting 18% by replacing cell-based nonresponse adjustments with logistic regression propensity models.

Evaluating statistical methods to ensure validity, efficiency and accuracy is one of the occupation's two highest-rated tasks. The strong bullet names the method replaced, the method used and the gain in precision a sponsor pays for. The weak bullet only says that analysis happened, which any applicant for any data role can claim, and gives a reviewer nothing to ask about.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Models named, data and result missing

Fix: Competitor examples say a statistician designed and implemented models to analyze complex datasets. Name the data and its size, the method, and the result in the units a methods lead trusts: margins matched, CVs, design effects, errata.

  2. Software you cannot back up

Fix: A senior mathematical statistician at the Census Bureau advises being ready to give examples for every language you list. Tie R, SAS and Python to a program in a bullet, and drop any you have only used in a course.

  3. Number processing called statistics

Fix: Some state postings say processing numbers by other than statistical methods does not count as qualifying experience. Describe the statistical method in each bullet, such as sampling, weighting, estimation or modeling, not data entry, verification or simple tabulation.

  4. Federal application details left out

Fix: Census statistician postings this year set a page limit, ask for each job's dates and weekly hours, and check your statistics coursework against a credit-hour rule. Follow the limit, give the hours, and keep a course list ready to upload.

  5. One generic CV for every posting

Fix: Industry statisticians who hire warn against generic, machine-written CVs. A survey methods post, a clinical trials post and a business analytics post use different words for similar work. Match each one's methods language and put its data type in your headline.

08Format and template

One column, in the order summary, experience, education, skills, certifications, with entry level leading on the degrees. Put your specialty and the data you work with in the headline, name the method and its precision result in each bullet, and keep each software name in the bullet where you used it. For federal postings, follow the announcement's page limit and give each job's dates and weekly hours.

09Questions statisticians ask

Do statisticians need a master's degree?

Usually. BLS says statisticians typically need a master's degree, though some entry-level positions accept a bachelor's, and federal jobs need at least a bachelor's degree or significant coursework in mathematics. O*NET places the occupation in Job Zone Five, and 62 percent of respondents said a new hire needs a master's degree, 14 percent a bachelor's and 10 percent a doctorate. List your statistics and mathematics coursework when a posting sets credit rules.

How much do statisticians make?

The May 2025 median for statisticians was $105,650, with the lowest tenth under $64,000 and the highest tenth over $174,050. Industry matters: computer systems design paid a median $167,180, the federal government $132,620, research and development $130,590, healthcare and social assistance $100,900, and state colleges and universities $80,680. The federal government is also the largest single employer of statisticians.

What is the job outlook for statisticians?

BLS projects employment of statisticians to grow 11 percent from 2025 to 2035, about 3,400 jobs, as statistical analysis is used more widely to inform business, healthcare and policy decisions. About 2,000 openings a year are projected for mathematicians and statisticians together. Federal statistical agencies lost staff over the past year, so check each agency's current hiring and apply to contractors and state agencies as well.

What is the difference between a statistician and a data scientist?

O*NET counts them separately and lists each as related to the other. Statisticians' highest-rated tasks are evaluating whether methods are valid and efficient, designing experiments and samples, and preparing and weighting raw data. The American Statistical Association's president describes the difference as reasoning under uncertainty and caring how the data came to be. Employers use both titles for similar roles, so read the duties, not the title.

Is PStat accreditation worth it for a statistician?

It can help, but no credential is required. O*NET lists no license for statisticians, and CareerOneStop's certifications for the code are an IBM data platform credential and two actuarial designations, none general to statistics. The American Statistical Association offers GStat to holders of an advanced degree and PStat once you can document professional experience. List either below your experience, with the year earned.
