What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Semantic models in the headline

Capacity and finance reporting on Power BI semantic models. The headline claims shared models rather than a pile of reports, which is the step from maintaining BI to owning it.

  2. 2

    Model size and refresh cadence

Thirty-eight million rows refreshed hourly behind bed boards for six hospitals. Row count and refresh cadence are how a BI manager sizes a model, and they are the first things an interviewer probes.

  3. 3

    Reports retired with sign-off

Sixty-four overlapping reports cut to eighteen certified ones, agreed with every owner. Rationalization is only real when the owners agree, and saying so shows the political half of the work was done.

  4. 4

    Definitions settled with nursing

Twenty-two KPI definitions agreed with finance and nursing leaders, ending three competing occupancy numbers. In a hospital the argument over occupancy is constant, and settling it is worth a line of its own.

  5. 5

    Security instead of copies

Thirty regional copies replaced with dynamic row-level security, and monthly upkeep fell from twenty hours to three. It is the Power BI move hiring managers ask about most, stated with its payoff.

  6. 6

    The retail years, kept short

The labor report and the SQL views stay, each in one line with its number. They show where the modeling habits came from without taking space from the hospital work this reader is hiring for.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree comes first, then maintenance work written as results: weekly viewers growing, a metric dictionary that cut definition questions, test cases run before each release and managers trained on a report. The internship keeps one line with the hours it saved at close.

Typical titles: Business intelligence analyst I, BI coordinator, BI specialist

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

Ownership of a semantic model replaces a list of reports. The bullets give the model's size and refresh cadence, a rationalization agreed with every owner, KPI definitions settled with clinical leaders, row-level security in place of copies and a model refresh cut from forty-two minutes to six. The retail years keep two lines.

Typical titles: Business intelligence analyst, BI developer, Senior business intelligence analyst

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from a model to a function: a team of four, monthly active users counted, a platform migration measured in reports retired, a certification process measured in reconciliation requests and a Copilot rollout measured in questions that no longer reach the queue. Earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Senior business intelligence analyst, Business intelligence engineer, Manager, business intelligence

04Summary

Weak

Dynamic business intelligence analyst with a passion for turning data into actionable insights through compelling dashboards and visualizations that empower stakeholders.

Strong

Business intelligence analyst with five years in retail and hospital reporting, owning the capacity and finance semantic models at a six-hospital health system. Cut 64 overlapping reports to 18 certified ones and put one definition of occupancy in front of 450 users.

The strong version names the models owned, the setting, a rationalization with its before and after, and the user count. A BI manager can ask how the definitions were agreed or which reports were retired. The weak one promises insight and empowerment and describes nothing the hiring team could check.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Created dashboards and reports in Power BI for various departments to support data-driven decision making.

Strong

  • Replaced 30 regional report copies with dynamic row-level security, cutting monthly maintenance from 20 hours to 3.

It names a specific Power BI technique, what it replaced and the hours it gave back. Hiring managers for BI roles look for exactly this move, because copying a report per region is the most common way a BI estate becomes unmaintainable. The weak bullet could describe any analyst in any tool, and it never says who used the dashboards or what they decided.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Power BI named with nothing behind it

Fix: Recruiters who place BI analysts say the tool name alone tells them nothing, because every applicant lists it. Show the depth instead: the size of the model you own, how often it refreshes, the measures you wrote and whether row-level security runs on it.

  2. No sign anyone opened the reports

Fix: A report nobody opens answers no question, however well it is built. Give weekly or monthly viewers, the reports you retired and the teams who stopped asking for extracts. Adoption is the number BI managers are judged on, so they read for it.

  3. Conflicting numbers patched instead of fixed

Fix: When two dashboards disagree, telling people to check the filters is a patch. Hiring managers want the candidate who moved both onto one model with shared measures and an agreed definition. Write the definitions you settled and who signed off on them.

  4. A report copied for every region

Fix: Thirty near-identical copies read as thirty maintenance jobs. If you replaced them with one report and dynamic row-level security, say so, and give the hours it saved. If you still maintain copies, that is the project to propose in the interview.

  5. Dashboards with no question behind them

Fix: Practitioners who run self-service programs say the first thing to ask for a new dashboard is the question it answers. Put that question, or the decision the report feeds, into the bullet, so a reader sees a purpose rather than a count of visuals.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills and certifications. Name the BI tool and the modeling language in the headline, because recruiters match those first, and keep model size, refresh times and user counts as text in the bullets rather than in a screenshot. Link a sample report only if it runs on public data. This example uses The Jake's template. Standard, Executive Classic and Warm Classic hold the same content in one column.

09Questions business intelligence analysts ask

Is the PL-300 certification worth getting for a BI analyst job?

Early in a career, often yes. CareerOneStop tags it as in demand among the 79 certifications it lists for the role, and Microsoft-heavy employers recognize it. Recruiters also say it does not prove modeling depth on its own. Pair it with a bullet about a model you built, and keep it current, because Microsoft requires a free renewal assessment to keep it active.

What is the difference between a BI analyst and a data analyst on a resume?

Ownership of shared assets. A BI analyst resume shows the semantic models, certified reports, KPI definitions, access rules and training that many people rely on every week. A data analyst resume leans toward one-off analyses and the decisions they changed. If your work was mostly the first kind, write it that way, with users and refresh times rather than findings.

Should I list both Power BI and Tableau?

List both only if you can build in both. In 2025 postings for the role, Power BI appeared in 20 percent and Tableau in 19 percent, and many employers name either one. Put the tool you know best first, and let a bullet prove it. A second tool you used once reads as padding to a hiring manager who will test it.

How do I make report maintenance sound like real work?

Count what the maintenance protected. Give the number of reports you kept running, the viewers who rely on them, the defects caught in testing and the definition questions you stopped by writing a dictionary. Maintenance is most of an entry BI job, and hiring managers know it. What they look for is evidence that you improved the estate while you kept it running.

How should a BI analyst resume show Copilot or AI work?

Through the semantic model. Several recent postings ask for AI-ready or agent-ready semantic layers, because an assistant can only answer well from curated measures and clear names. If you prepared a model for Copilot or a similar assistant, say how many users it served and what share of their questions it handled without a ticket. A tool name alone says nothing.
