What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Methods, category and scope

Consumer insights analyst, concept testing, segmentation and brand tracking, CPG. Client-side insights postings this year ask for these methods, and the category tells a brand where the experience lies.

  2. 2

    Launches judged against forecast

Concept tests and conjoint pricing for 11 launches, with eight meeting forecasts set from the tests. Checking how well research predicted results is the honest way to show the research mattered.

  3. 3

    A segmentation the brand adopted

A needs-based segmentation of 6,000 category buyers, adopted for media targeting. Identifying potential markets from buyers' needs and habits is a core task, and adoption shows the work was used.

  4. 4

    Tracker reporting cut to days

The quarterly brand health tracker automated in SQL and Tableau, from three weeks to four days. Brand KPIs such as awareness feature in insights postings, and faster reporting means faster decisions.

  5. 5

    Syndicated data in line reviews

Circana and Numerator data used in 14 retailer line reviews covering $85M in sales. Brand and data-supplier postings ask for syndicated data, and retailer reviews are where it earns shelf space.

  6. 6

    Research credential with renewal

IPC Principal from the Insights Association, with its renewal date. It is the research-specific credential on CareerOneStop's list for this code, and the expiry shows it is current.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two agency years in four counted bullets: surveys programmed without logic errors, choice models for named brand work, AI coding checked against a hand-coded sample, and decks delivered within days of field close. The internship keeps one line on data cleaning.

Typical titles: Research analyst, Market research analyst, Junior insights analyst

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years in the units an insights director weighs: launches tested and how many hit forecast, a segmentation the brand adopted, a tracker automated, syndicated data used in retailer reviews, and a vendor budget run cheaper. The agency role keeps one line, and IPC sits beneath.

Typical titles: Consumer insights analyst, Senior market research analyst, Insights analyst

  • Senior

    7+ years

Running the program replaces running studies: three analysts and a research budget, a stage-gate funnel from concepts to launches, cost per study cut in-house, validation rules for AI and synthetic data, and an outlook that shapes marketing spend. The two earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Consumer insights manager, Market research manager, Insights lead

04Summary

Weak

Data-driven market research professional with a passion for uncovering consumer insights and strong skills in quantitative and qualitative research.

Strong

Consumer insights analyst with six years in market research, the last four at a beverage brand. Runs concept and pricing research for 11 launches and built the segmentation the brand now targets.

An insights director reads for the methods you run, the category you know and what the business did with your work. The strong version names concept and pricing research, a beverage brand and a segmentation in use. The weak version names research in general and a passion.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Conducted market research studies to understand customer preferences and support marketing and product decisions.

Strong

  • Led concept tests and conjoint pricing research for 11 product launches, with 8 meeting first-year sales forecasts set from the tests.

Collecting and analyzing data on customer preferences to identify markets and factors affecting demand is a core task for the occupation. The strong bullet names the methods, the number of launches and how the forecasts held up. The weak bullet describes research that could have changed nothing, and gives an insights director no decision or result to ask about.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Sales credited to a survey

Fix: Competitor examples credit a research study with a lift in sales. Research informs a decision that someone else makes. Say which decision your work informed, what you tested and how the result held up, such as launches that met the forecast your test set.

  2. Research in general, no methods

Fix: Agency and brand postings this year name the methods they want: segmentation, MaxDiff, conjoint, concept and creative testing, syndicated data. Keyword screens reject resumes that skip them. Name each method you ran in the bullet where you ran it.

  3. AI coding hidden or unchecked

Fix: Research leaders say AI now codes open ends and summarizes transcripts, and that juniors are valued for judging its output. If you use it, say how you checked it, such as against a hand-coded sample, and what that saved.

  4. No sample sizes or completes

Fix: A finding is only as strong as the people behind it. Give the completes, the buyers surveyed or the panel size in your bullets, so a reader can judge the evidence without asking. It also shows the scale of studies you can run.

  5. No one able to vouch for the work

Fix: Insights hiring managers say that with so many applicants they lean on someone who can vouch for a candidate's work. Name clients or brands where you can, keep references from research leads ready, and show results they would confirm.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills, certifications. Put your methods and category in the headline, give sample sizes and completes as numbers, and name the decision each study informed. List research software in the bullets where you used it, and add IPC with its renewal date. Keep references from research leads ready, because insights hiring managers lean on people who can vouch for your work.

09Questions market research analysts ask

What degree do you need to be a market research analyst?

Usually a bachelor's. BLS says analysts typically need one in market research or a related business, communications or social science field, and that courses in statistics, research methods and marketing are important. Some employers prefer a master's, such as an MBA or a marketing research degree. O*NET respondents split 70 percent bachelor's and 30 percent master's, so put statistics and methods coursework on an entry resume.

How much do market research analysts make?

The May 2025 median for market research analysts and marketing specialists was $78,760, with the lowest tenth under $43,390 and the highest tenth over $155,480. Industry matters: information paid a median $102,670, management of companies $99,850, finance and insurance $94,330, wholesale trade $78,780 and consulting services $77,820. Client-side insights roles and agency roles often pay differently, so compare postings for the same side.

Is market research a good career with AI?

BLS projects employment to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, about 66,300 jobs, as more industries use data and market research, with about 82,000 openings a year. Research leaders writing in the trade press say AI now handles coding and transcript synthesis, so entry roles reward judgment about whether AI output is right. Show that judgment on your resume.

Which software should a market research analyst list?

The tools your target postings name. O*NET's count of 2025 postings for the occupation puts Excel at 16 percent, PowerPoint at 13 and SQL and Tableau at 4 each, because the code also covers marketing specialists. Research postings read for this page asked for SPSS, R, Python, Sawtooth and syndicated data from Circana, Nielsen or SPINS. List each in the bullet where you used it.

Is the IPC certification worth it?

It is voluntary, as BLS notes for the occupation's certifications, but it is the research-specific one. CareerOneStop lists 19 certifications for the code, including the Insights Association's Insights Professional Certification, while most others are general marketing credentials. The association says the credential must be renewed with continuing education, so list it with its expiry date below your experience and renew it before it lapses.
