Sales representative resume examples & writing guide for 2026
Three sales resumes at inside, outside and national accounts level, each rendered in the template the page names and pulled apart note by note. Every one gives the size of the book, the quota behind the number, and the margin it was sold at.
Written by the Resumi editorial team for a fictional candidate. Role facts come from O*NET and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Strength band is Resumi’s optimization score, not a ranking any employer sees.
What makes this resume work
Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note. Hover a note and its marker lifts.
1
Accounts and book up front
Two hundred and forty accounts, a book worth two million. A sales manager reads scope before anything else, because it decides whether this person is being asked to step up or sideways.
2
Attainment against a stated quota
One hundred and twelve percent of a number the reader can see. Attainment with no target behind it is the most common unreadable claim in sales, and naming the quota removes the doubt in one line.
3
Margin held, not only volume
Gross margin at twenty-four point three percent beside the attainment. Any rep can hit a number by discounting, so the two figures together are what tells a branch manager how it was hit.
4
Lines per order, with the tool
Three point four to four point six, and the attachment sheet the desk kept using. It is the metric inside sales is actually run on, and the tool is proof the gain was built rather than lucky.
5
Win-backs counted out of the pool
Thirty-eight recovered out of a hundred and forty lapsed, with the dollars behind them. Giving the denominator turns a nice number into a hit rate the reader can compare with their own.
6
The service year taught the catalog
Four thousand orders and three hundred claims, and nine thousand parts learned. Most distributor reps start on the service desk, and the catalog knowledge it buys is a real qualification.
1
Territory size before anything else
Six point eight million across eighty-four accounts. Outside sales is bought and sold by territory size, and a reader who has that number can place this candidate against their own open patch immediately.
2
Three straight years of attainment
Not one good year. Consecutive attainment is the thing hiring managers say they screen for, because a single number over quota can be a house account or a lucky bid rather than a rep.
3
New business named by source
One point four million opened, twenty-two operators signed, and fourteen of them taken from the leading rival. Where the business came from is the difference between hunting and being handed accounts.
4
Margin against the branch average
Twenty-seven point one percent against a branch running under twenty-five. A margin figure alone means nothing to an outside reader. Set against the house average it becomes a ranking.
5
Club finish with the field size
Third of forty-one, twice in three years. Plenty of companies give the trip to the top half of the room, so the placing and the field are what make the award mean something to a stranger.
6
Inside years down to two lines
The desk job keeps attainment and the win-back dollars, and drops everything else. The territory is what this reader is hiring for, so the territory is where the lines went.
1
Book, partners and states
Twenty-one million, six distributors, fourteen states. Selling through partners is a different job from selling direct, and the shape of the channel belongs in the first line where nobody can miss it.
2
Growth from a stated base
Sixteen point four million to twenty-one over three years. Senior sales resumes often give the current number alone, which cannot be read as growth, inheritance or decline until the starting point is there.
3
Programs, then the volume
Four annual programs negotiated, and the two largest partners moving nearly a third more. A negotiated agreement is an input. What the partners did afterwards is the part worth reading.
4
Partner sellers trained and measured
Forty people trained on the line, and their attachment rate more than doubled. Enabling other people to sell is most of a channel job, and almost nobody puts a number on whether it worked.
5
Forecast error the plant acted on
Twenty-two percent error down to nine, and three slow parts pulled out of stock on the strength of it. Forecasting is where sales meets the factory, and this is evidence of being believed there.
6
Territory years, a single line
Six years in foodservice keep the territory size and the attainment record, and nothing more. Ten years fit one page because the older work keeps two numbers and loses the description.

The headline gives accounts and book size. The summary pairs attainment with the quota it was measured against. The bullets carry margin, lines per order and a win-back rate with its denominator, and the service year stays because it is where the catalog knowledge came from.
The headline is the territory. The summary claims three consecutive years rather than one, then new business with its source, margin against the branch average, and a club finish with the size of the field. The inside years keep two lines.
Scope moves from a territory to a channel: book size, partners, states, growth from a stated base, programs with the volume that followed, sellers trained with their attachment rate, and forecast accuracy the plant acted on. The earlier territory keeps one line.
Results-driven sales professional with a proven track record of exceeding targets, building strong customer relationships and consistently delivering revenue growth in competitive markets.
Strong
Outside sales representative with five years in industrial and foodservice distribution, carrying a $6.8M territory across 84 accounts. Closed at 118% of quota for three straight years and opened $1.4M of new business last year.
Two industries, a territory size, an account count, consecutive attainment and the new business behind it. A sales manager can compare all five against their open territory in about four seconds. The weak version exceeds unnamed targets in unnamed markets, and it is the single most common opening line in the sales pile.
05Bullets
Weak
Consistently exceeded monthly and quarterly sales targets while building lasting relationships with key accounts across the assigned territory.
Strong
Held gross margin at 27.1% through two supplier increases, against a branch average of 24.8%.
A margin rate, the pressure it was held under, and the house average to compare it with. It answers the question every branch manager actually has, which is whether the number was bought with discount. The weak bullet has no territory, no target, no margin and no number, and it survives being moved to any sales resume in the stack.

Attainment given as a percentage with no target behind it
Fix: A hundred and twenty percent of what? Put the quota in dollars next to the attainment, for every year you claim. A percentage alone is the easiest number on a sales resume to inflate, and managers read it that way until the target is named.
2
No territory, account count or book size anywhere on the page
Fix: Scope decides whether your record transfers. Give the territory dollars, the account count, the counties or states, and what you sold. A rep who closed the same number on twelve accounts and one who did it on two hundred have different jobs.
3
Revenue with no margin anywhere beside it
Fix: Volume bought with discount is not a result, and distributors and manufacturers both know it. Put the gross margin rate, the price increases you held through, or the contract terms you protected next to the revenue. It is the fastest way to separate yourself from a discounter.
4
President's Club listed without the size of the field
Fix: Some companies give the trip to the top three, some to the top half. Say where you finished and out of how many, high on the page. Without the placing and the field, the award reads as decoration rather than a ranking.
5
Activity counts standing in for outcomes
Fix: Calls made, demos booked and miles driven describe effort, not results. Lead with what closed: revenue, attainment, margin, accounts opened, accounts kept. Activity belongs on the page only when it explains a result, such as the win rate on the quotes you actually sent.
08Format and template
Reverse chronological, one page, and the scope numbers in the top third where a scanning manager will find them. Put attainment, quota and any club placing in the summary or a short awards line rather than burying them in the third bullet of a role. Keep the numbers in the text, not in a graphic. This example uses Blue Professional. The same content works in Standard, Executive Classic and Beige Two Column.

09Questions sales representatives ask
What numbers belong on a sales representative resume?
Quota in dollars and attainment against it for each year, territory or book size, account count, gross margin rate, new business opened and where it came from, retention or win-back rates with their denominators, and any ranking with the size of the field. For channel roles, add the partners and states. If a number cannot be checked in a reference call, leave it off, because a sales interview is the one place where every figure gets tested.
How do I write this resume if I missed quota?
Give the real attainment and the context around it. Territories get cut, product lines get pulled, a plant misses six months of deliveries, a category drops. Say what the territory did against the branch or the region, what you held, and what you grew inside a bad year. Sales managers have all missed a number, and they hire people who can explain one. A page of unbroken triple-digit years with no targets named is the version that gets doubted.
Do sales representatives need a license or certification?
Not for the job itself. The federal listing shows no license on the seller and ten optional certifications from nine organizations, mostly product-specific ones such as the manufacturers representative and construction product credentials. What does exist is licensing on certain goods, such as alcohol, grain, feed and livestock, where the state licenses the transaction rather than the person. If your line carries one of those, say so, because it is a barrier to entry your competition may not clear.
How do I show a territory I built versus one I inherited?
By giving the starting number. An inherited book at eight million and a book you grew from five to eight read identically unless you write the base. Say what the territory was worth when you took it, what it is worth now, how many accounts you opened yourself and which ones came from a competitor. Inheriting a strong patch is not a weakness, but it is a different claim than building one, and pretending otherwise falls apart in the interview.
Is distributor sales different from software sales on a resume?
Yes, and most resume advice online is written for the software version. This occupation is overwhelmingly distribution and manufacturing, where the reader cares about margin rate, lines per order, account count, supplier price increases and share of the customer's spend, not annual contract value or a sales methodology acronym. Write for the branch manager who will read it. If you are moving between the two worlds, translate the metrics rather than keeping the vocabulary of the one you are leaving.
How long should a sales representative resume be?
One page. Even ten years fits once earlier territories collapse to a line holding their size and their attainment record. Cut the product-training list first, then the methodology acronyms, then anything describing daily activity. What survives is quota, attainment, territory, margin, accounts and rankings, which is the same list the hiring manager was going to score you on before they opened the file.
