What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Service count in the headline

A delivery platform for one hundred sixty services, then GitHub Actions, Argo CD and Terraform. A recruiter matching a DevOps posting finds the scale and the three tools that decide the first screen before reading the summary.

  2. 2

    Templates teams adopt without tickets

Two hundred ten Jenkins jobs became twelve shared workflows that product teams pick up on their own, and lead time fell from nine days to twenty hours. It reads as an enabler, not a gatekeeper, with the throughput to prove it.

  3. 3

Change fail rate with its cause

Canary releases with automated rollback on error and latency checks took the change fail rate from eighteen percent to seven. Naming the check that triggers a rollback is what lets an interviewer test the claim.

  4. 4

    An audit closed through code

Thirty-eight AWS accounts on shared Terraform modules with a nightly drift check, and every infrastructure finding in the bank audit closed. Regulated employers want compliance shown as automation, not as a spreadsheet someone updates by hand.

  5. 5

    Recovery time instead of uptime

Failed deployment recovery time from three hours to twenty-two minutes, through deploy-linked monitors, runbooks and on-call review. It reports stability the way delivery teams measure it now, rather than an uptime percentage anyone could claim.

  6. 6

    Two certifications, both dated

The Kubernetes administrator exam and the Terraform associate, each with its month. Both expire and get renewed, so the date tells a reader the knowledge matches the versions of the tools in use today.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree comes first, then two years at a cleared contractor sized in services, servers and hours. Each bullet shows a DevOps concern: a pipeline with its merge-to-test time, STIG hardening with a scan result, environments built from code and access requests automated. The homelab project shows Kubernetes run by choice.

Typical titles: Junior DevOps engineer, DevOps engineer, Software engineer, platform engineering

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

A delivery platform replaces single pipelines. The bullets carry the service and engineer count, a Jenkins consolidation with its lead time, canaries with the change fail rate, Terraform standards that closed an audit and recovery time cut through monitoring and on-call review. The contractor years keep two lines.

Typical titles: DevOps engineer, Senior DevOps engineer, Release engineer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope moves from a platform to the people who use it: a team of six, a golden path measured by voluntary adoption, release safety through holiday peaks, cloud cost cut in dollars and policy checks on every infrastructure change, AI-written ones included. Earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Staff DevOps engineer, Lead software engineer, DevOps, Principal platform engineer

04Summary

Weak

Results-oriented DevOps engineer with extensive experience in CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, containerization and automation, seeking to streamline processes and improve efficiency.

Strong

DevOps engineer with five years across defense contracting and banking, running the delivery platform for 160 services at a regional bank. Consolidated 210 Jenkins jobs into GitHub Actions and Argo CD, cut change lead time from 9 days to 20 hours and brought the change fail rate from 18% to 7%.

The strong version sizes the platform, names the old and new tools and reports two delivery measures with their baselines. A hiring manager can ask how lead time fell or what the canaries checked. The weak one lists four categories every DevOps posting already names and shows none of them working.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for maintaining CI/CD pipelines and deploying applications to Kubernetes using Jenkins and Terraform.

Strong

  • Reduced the change fail rate from 18% to 7% by adding canary releases with automated rollback on error-rate and latency checks.

It names the stability measure a delivery team is judged on, the mechanism that moved it and the starting point. Interviewers will ask what the canary compared and how fast a rollback fired, and the candidate has an answer ready. The weak bullet describes a duty every DevOps engineer holds and says nothing about whether releases got any safer.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Kubernetes on everything, with no reason given

Fix: Engineers in recent industry threads call it resume-driven development: clusters added to small apps so the tool lands on a resume, then cloud bills and incidents climb. Show judgment instead. Name a workload you kept on something simpler, or clusters you retired, and say why.

  2. A platform with no one shown using it

Fix: Recruiters for platform roles say the most common rejection is missing product thinking. Internal engineers are your users. Next to what you built, give voluntary adoption, a new service's time to first deploy or the tickets your self-service removed.

  3. Written as the gatekeeper of production

Fix: A resume that says you approved every release or owned every pipeline reads as the bottleneck DevOps was meant to remove. Describe templates, runbooks and access that other teams now use without waiting on you, and count those teams.

  4. No incident on the page at all

Fix: Engineers who interview for DevOps and reliability roles say production experience, structured troubleshooting and postmortems should decide most of the evaluation. Put one incident on the page: what failed, how long recovery took and what changed so it did not happen again.

  5. Clearance and STIG work buried at the bottom

Fix: Defense contractors hiring DevOps engineers list the clearance level, Security+ and STIG hardening as requirements, not extras. Put an active clearance in the headline or summary, the certification with its date, and the hardening work with a server count and a scan result.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills and certifications. Put the delivery stack in the headline, then size the work with services, environments, change lead time, change fail rate and recovery time as plain text in the bullets. Date every cloud and Kubernetes certification so a reader can see it is current, and put a clearance in the summary. This example uses The Jake's template. Standard, Minimal Dark and Executive Classic hold the same content in one column.

09Questions DevOps engineers ask

Should I call myself a DevOps engineer or a platform engineer?

Use the title the posting uses. O*NET lists DevOps Engineer among the reported titles for software developers, and recruiters still search for it. Postings put it beside platform, infrastructure, release and site reliability engineer, often for overlapping work. Match the headline to the posting, then let the bullets show whether your work leans toward pipelines, a self-service platform or production reliability.

Which DevOps tools matter most on a resume?

The ones you ran in production, matched to the posting. In 2025 postings for software developers, Kubernetes and Git each appeared in 14 percent, Docker in 13, Linux in 9, Jenkins in 8 and Terraform in 6. Banks and defense contractors still ask for Jenkins and Ansible, while product companies lean toward GitHub Actions and Argo CD. Name each tool inside the bullet where it changed a number.

Which DevOps certifications are worth getting?

CareerOneStop lists 86 certifications from 33 organizations under a DevOps search, including AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional and Microsoft's DevOps Engineer Expert, and the Certified Kubernetes Administrator under Kubernetes. Defense contractors often require Security+ before a cleared engineer can start. Elsewhere a certification supports production work but rarely replaces it, so list one or two that match the posting's cloud, each with its date.

What should a junior DevOps resume show?

Automation that other people used. Junior postings ask you to support pipelines, run basic Kubernetes, handle environment access and write documentation. Show a pipeline you built, an access or onboarding task you automated and a small cluster you run yourself through GitOps. Practitioners advise building your own apps on the tools, so you can speak to their limits when an interviewer pushes on a design choice.

How do I show DORA metrics on a resume?

Pick the measures you actually moved and give the baseline. Deployment frequency and change lead time show throughput. Change fail rate and failed deployment recovery time show stability. Write each as a before and after with the mechanism, such as canary releases or smaller changes. Present them as results of a change you made, not targets you hit, and never compare your team with another team.
