Site reliability engineer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three site reliability engineer resumes, from a first set of SLOs to a staff-level reliability program, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each one counts what an SRE hiring manager probes: objectives held, incidents led, toil removed and failure tested.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Domain and incident role named

Site reliability engineer, payments, SLOs and incident command. Senior SRE postings ask for incident leadership as well as objectives, and the domain tells the reader what a minute of downtime costs.

  2. 2

Error budget that changed a launch

A 99.95% objective at 40M transactions a day, with three launches paused on a spent budget. An error budget proves itself when it changes a release decision, and this bullet shows it did.

  3. 3

    Incidents led and measured

Twenty-six major incidents commanded, with median time to mitigate from 52 to 19 minutes. Leading incident response and driving corrective action are listed in this year's postings.

  4. 4

Toil as a share of time

Team toil from 48% to 22% of on-call time. The best-known SRE practice guide caps operational work to protect engineering time, so a falling share is the number to show.

  5. 5

    Failure tested before it happened

Quarterly game days proving regional failover in under four minutes before the holiday peak. Few teams test failure regularly, so a resume that shows it stands out.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two years in four counted bullets: objectives set with service owners, a manual task automated away, on-call with a response rate and postmortems, and dashboards the weekly review relies on. The internship and part-time year keep one line with the flaky tests fixed.

Typical titles: Site reliability engineer I, Junior SRE, Production engineer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years in the units an SRE lead weighs: an objective held with launches paused on its budget, incidents commanded with mitigation time cut, toil as a share of on-call time, failover proven on game days, and capacity forecast for peak with latency held. The streaming role keeps one line.

Typical titles: Site reliability engineer, SRE, payments, Production engineer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Program leadership replaces the pager: 60 services with 34 teams owning objectives, availability raised by cell isolation, major incidents cut through readiness reviews, reliability work priced in revenue, and incident commanders trained across teams. The authorization and streaming years keep one line each.

Typical titles: Staff site reliability engineer, SRE lead, Principal reliability engineer

04Summary

Weak

Dedicated site reliability engineer with a passion for building highly available, scalable systems and strong experience in monitoring, automation and incident response.

Strong

Site reliability engineer with six years in streaming and payments, the last four on card authorization at 40M transactions a day. Held a 99.95% SLO with error budgets and cut median time to mitigate from 52 to 19 minutes.

An SRE hiring manager reads the system's stakes, the objective and the incident record before anything else. The strong version gives transaction volume, an SLO with its budget and a mitigation time. The weak version describes every reliability engineer alive.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for monitoring production systems, responding to alerts and participating in the on-call rotation for critical services.

Strong

  • Reduced team toil from 48% to 22% of on-call time by turning 11 runbooks into automated, self-healing jobs.

Monitoring the system to keep it operating to specification is a listed task for software developers, and site reliability work turns that monitoring into automation. The strong bullet measures toil as a share of time, before and after, and names how it fell. A reviewer can ask which runbooks went first and why, while the weak bullet describes a rotation anyone can join.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Uptime that rose by a percentage

Fix: Sample resumes claim uptime rose by a large percentage, which is impossible for a service already near full availability. State the objective, the measured availability before and after, the period, and what the error budget did, as the mid and senior examples do.

  2. Firefighting presented as the job

Fix: Hiring leaders say they want SREs who automate what they would otherwise repeat. A resume of heroic overnight saves suggests the toil never went away. Show the pages you stopped, the runbooks you automated and the share of time that toil now takes.

  3. Objectives named but never used

Fix: Writing SLOs is easy. Postings ask for SLOs, error budgets and readiness reviews that change decisions. Say what the objective was, who owned it and one time the budget paused a launch or redirected a sprint, so the reader sees the practice working.

  4. Reliability with no link to the business

Fix: Industry surveys find few reliability teams connect their work to revenue or customer outcomes. Name the user journey you protected, such as checkout or billing, and if you can, the revenue at risk per minute or the declines avoided. It is the bullet a director reads twice.

  5. A certification that does not exist

Fix: Some sample resumes list a Google site reliability certification. Google's matching credential is the Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, and the common Kubernetes one is the Certified Kubernetes Administrator. List the exact name, the issuer and the dates, because interviewers check.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills, certifications. Put the reliability practice and your main language in the headline, and keep objectives, availability, incident counts, mitigation time and toil share as text in the bullets. Link to a public postmortem or talk only if it shows your own work, and drop older roles to one line.

09Questions site reliability engineers ask

Is site reliability engineering a software job or an operations job?

Both, and the resume should show it. O*NET counts SREs with software developers, whose listed tasks include modifying software to correct errors and improve performance and monitoring systems to keep them within specification. The best-known SRE practice guide caps operations work to protect engineering time, so give at least as many bullets to what you built as to what you responded to.

Which tools should a site reliability engineer list?

The ones behind your bullets. In O*NET's count of 2025 postings for software developers, Python appears in 29 percent, AWS in 26, Kubernetes in 14, Docker in 13, Linux in 9, Terraform in 6 and Go in 5, while Splunk sits at 2 and Grafana and Prometheus at 1 each. Monitoring tools are rarely named in postings, so the practice matters more than the brand.

How much do site reliability engineers make?

The handbook counts SREs with software developers, whose May 2025 median was $135,980, with the lowest tenth under $82,460 and the highest tenth over $214,670. Software publishers paid a median $164,550, finance and insurance $135,460 and computer systems design $132,050. Reliability roles at payments and large consumer platforms tend to sit toward the top of that range.

Do I need a certification to get an SRE job?

No, but one can help a career changer get read. CareerOneStop lists 75 certifications for software developers, including Google's Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer and Linux Foundation credentials. The Certified Kubernetes Administrator is common on SRE resumes. List one, with its expiry date, below experience. A postmortem you wrote or an objective you set says far more in an interview than any exam score.

How do I move from operations or support into site reliability engineering?

Bring the code forward. Software developers typically hold a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field, and SRE interviews include coding. Pick the operational task you know best, automate it, and measure the hours or pages it removed. Then show one objective you defined and one incident you led or wrote up, as the entry example does in its first year.
