Cloud engineer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three cloud engineer resumes, from a first account baseline to leading a two-cloud platform team, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each one counts what a cloud hiring manager checks: accounts, networks, guardrails, migrations, spend and recovery time.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    The foundation, named

Cloud engineer, AWS landing zone, networking and guardrails. Cloud foundation postings ask for account vending, networking primitives and identity, so the headline answers all three.

  2. 2

Spend down with a reporting line

Cloud spend down 23%, or $1.1M a year, reported monthly to finance. Advising on costs is a listed task, and a monthly report shows the saving was tracked rather than estimated.

  3. 3

    Account vending in minutes

A Control Tower landing zone for 140 accounts, with vending cut from three weeks to 20 minutes. It is the self-service paved path postings describe, measured by how long teams wait.

  4. 4

    A network simplified

Sixty-four peering links consolidated into one Transit Gateway hub for 140 accounts and two data centers. Hub-and-spoke networking is named in foundation postings, and the count shows the cleanup.

  5. 5

    Guardrails that closed findings

Thirty-eight guardrails as policies and rules, with every HIPAA cloud audit finding closed. Regulated employers hire cloud engineers to pass audits, so the outcome sits in the bullet.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two years in four counted bullets: account baselines in reviewed Terraform, migrations with no failed cutover, monthly spend cut with the method, and access reviews automated against audit findings. The student IT job keeps one line, and the certification sits at the foot with its expiry.

Typical titles: Cloud engineer I, Associate cloud engineer, Junior cloud engineer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years of cloud foundations in the units a platform lead weighs: account vending time, network links consolidated, spend cut and reported to finance, guardrails tied to audit findings, and recovery time for claims systems. The bank role keeps one line with its migrations, and two dated certifications sit beneath.

Typical titles: Cloud engineer, Cloud infrastructure engineer, Cloud foundations engineer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Platform leadership replaces hands-on builds: seven engineers and 310 accounts across two clouds, an acquisition absorbed under one policy set, self-service measured by adoption, unit cost cut while usage grew, and audits passed through code. The landing zone and bank years keep one line each.

Typical titles: Lead cloud engineer, Principal cloud engineer, Cloud platform lead

04Summary

Weak

Results-oriented cloud engineer with knowledge of AWS, Azure and GCP, strong troubleshooting skills and a passion for automation, security and scalable infrastructure.

Strong

Cloud engineer with six years in banking and health insurance, the last four running the AWS foundation at a health plan: 140 accounts on one landing zone, account vending in 20 minutes, spend down 23%.

A cloud hiring manager reads the platform, the scale of the estate and what changed before anything else. The strong version gives one cloud, an account count, a vending time and a spend result. The weak version lists three clouds and proves none.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for managing the AWS environment, including networking, security and cost optimization, for multiple teams.

Strong

  • Designed the AWS landing zone with Control Tower for 140 accounts, cutting account vending from 3 weeks to 20 minutes.

Directing the analysis, development and operation of complete computer systems is one of the occupation's highest-rated tasks, and in cloud work that system is the landing zone. The strong bullet names the service, the number of accounts and how much faster teams got a new one. A manager can ask about any part, while the weak bullet only restates the job title.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Every cloud listed, none proven

Fix: Sample resumes claim knowledge of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud in one line. Postings usually name one cloud first. Put your main platform in the headline, name the services you configured in the bullets, and add a second cloud only where you ran something on it.

  2. Savings with no base or period

Fix: Cost is the top challenge cloud teams report, so savings get read closely. A percentage with no starting figure tells the reader nothing. Give dollars a month or a year, the method, and whether usage grew at the same time, as the senior example does with unit cost.

  3. An uptime figure with nothing behind it

Fix: Competitor examples quote a nines-style uptime with no period or system named. Recovery time is easier to believe: say which systems, the recovery time before and after, and how often you tested the restore, as the mid example does for claims systems.

  4. Identity and guardrails missing

Fix: Cloud foundation postings ask for IAM, account structure and policy, and regulated employers add auditors to the list. Count the accounts under guardrails, the policies you wrote, the access reviews you automated and the audit findings you closed.

  5. The starter project, unchanged

Fix: The best-known beginner cloud project already asks for infrastructure as code, a pipeline, tests and a write-up, so finishing it as written puts you level with everyone else who did. Add something of your own, such as a second region, a cost alarm or a module others reuse.

08Format and template

One column and one page, in the order summary, experience, education, skills, certifications. Put your main cloud and your infrastructure-as-code tool in the headline, and keep accounts, spend, recovery time and audit results as text in the bullets. List certifications with their expiry dates, since cloud certifications lapse, and drop older roles to one line before the page runs over.

09Questions cloud engineers ask

Do I need a degree to become a cloud engineer?

The handbook lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry education for the occupation group that counts cloud engineers. O*NET's own survey for computer systems engineers and architects is less strict: 41 percent of respondents said a postsecondary certificate, 27 percent an associate degree and 23 percent a bachelor's degree. A degree helps, but shipped infrastructure and a dated certification carry as much weight.

Which cloud certification should I get first?

The one for the cloud your target employers use. In O*NET's count of 2025 postings for the occupation, AWS appears in 31 percent and Azure in 26 percent. CareerOneStop lists 58 certifications for the code, none of them from AWS, Microsoft or Google, so do not read that list as a guide to vendor certifications. An associate-level architect certification is the usual start.

How much do cloud engineers make?

BLS counts cloud engineers in computer occupations, all other, whose May 2025 median was $116,580, or $56.05 an hour in O*NET's figures. The group's largest employers are professional, scientific and technical services, with 26.0 percent of jobs, and the federal government, with 19.9 percent. Senior cloud foundation roles at large employers pay well above the group median.

Is a cloud engineer the same as a DevOps engineer?

They overlap, but the bullets differ. O*NET's sample titles for the occupation include infrastructure engineer, IT architect and solutions architect, and its top tasks are about system requirements, secure implementation and component choices. A cloud engineer's resume carries accounts, networks, identity, guardrails, spend and recovery. A DevOps resume carries delivery pipelines and deploys. Pick the title your bullets support.

How do I show cloud cost savings on a resume?

As money with a base and a method. Providing advice on project costs is a listed task for the occupation, and finance teams will check your number. Give the spend before and after, in dollars a month or a year, say what you did, such as rightsizing, commitments or tagging for chargeback, and add a unit cost if usage grew at the same time.
