Industrial designer resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three industrial designer resumes following one designer from consultancy projects to leading a consumer audio company's hardware design, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. Each counts what a design director checks: products shipped, units, tooling and CMF.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Category and DFM in headline

Industrial designer, consumer audio hardware, CMF and DFM. Naming the product category and two manufacturing skills tells a hardware company this designer works on physical products, not screens.

  2. 2

    Shipped units lead the role

Three portable speakers taken from research to mass production, 410,000 units sold in their first year. Shipped volume is what a design director weighs first, so it opens the current role.

  3. 3

    CMF held at first article

CMF for two product families across seven colorways, with 96% of first-article parts passing color and finish checks. Monitoring how a design is manufactured is a listed task, and this measures it.

  4. 4

    Grips tested with real users

Four rounds of grip and button prototypes tested with 60 users, handling complaints down 35% after launch. Researching how a product will be used and by whom is the first duty BLS lists.

  5. 5

    Surfaces released without rework

Rhino and SolidWorks surfaces for three enclosures, released to the toolmaker in six weeks with no re-surfacing requests. A clean release shows CAD skill that goes beyond rendering a pretty model.

  6. 6

    Make skills traced to bullets

Design for manufacturing, injection molding and prototyping sit in the sidebar, and each is backed by a bullet. A skill a reviewer can trace to a result reads as experience rather than a keyword list.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree leads, then two consultancy years in four counted bullets: products taken to tooling with one product's sales, prototypes built faster in-house, manufacturability issues caught in CAD with their savings, and renders and CMF boards that won approval. The internship keeps one line.

Typical titles: Industrial designer, Junior industrial designer, Associate product designer

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. Six years in the units a design director weighs: speakers shipped with first-year units, CMF held at the factory, tooling changes cut, prototypes tested with users, surfaces released to the toolmaker and concept reviews supported. The consultancy role keeps one line.

Typical titles: Industrial designer, Product designer, hardware, Senior industrial designer

  • Senior

    7+ years

Leading the design team replaces drawing every part: four designers and nine products shipped, a design language and CMF library that sped up new colors, part count cut with savings per unit, recycled plastics at equal cost, and designers promoted. The two earlier roles keep one line each.

Typical titles: Lead industrial designer, Industrial design manager, Principal industrial designer

04Summary

Weak

Innovative industrial designer with a passion for creating beautiful, functional products and strong skills in sketching, CAD and rendering.

Strong

Industrial designer with six years in consumer products, the last four at a consumer audio company. Led industrial design on 3 shipped portable speakers that sold 410,000 units in their first year.

A design director reads for the products you have shipped, the category and the scale before opening the portfolio. The strong version names the category, the number of shipped products and their first-year units. The weak version lists tools and a passion, which every portfolio already shows.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Worked with engineering to make sure designs could be manufactured and to resolve issues during development.

Strong

  • Reduced tooling changes 40% by reviewing draft, parting lines and wall thickness with engineering at every CAD milestone.

Modifying and refining designs to conform with production limitations is one of the occupation's highest-rated tasks. The strong bullet names the manufacturing details checked, when they were checked and the drop in tooling changes. The weak bullet says only that the designer worked with engineering, which every industrial designer does each week and no reviewer can measure.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Products improved, none named

Fix: Competitor samples say a designer revamped products to enhance efficiency and quality, with no product, volume or method. Name what you designed, the manufacturing method and what shipped, with units sold or the date it went to tooling.

  2. No sign you design for the factory

Fix: Design recruiters look for evidence of manufacturing knowledge such as draft angles and wall thickness. Count the issues you caught in CAD before tooling, the tooling changes avoided or the parts merged, and say what each saved.

  3. CMF left to someone else

Fix: Hardware postings ask industrial designers to specify color, materials and finish for user-facing parts and check production parts against it. If you own CMF, say for how many products and colorways, and how first-article parts measured up.

  4. Final renders hiding the process

Fix: Postings this year say the portfolio must show process, problem-solving and prototyping, and recruiters want loose sketches beside the renders. Mention the prototypes and user tests in your bullets, so the resume points to the process the portfolio shows.

  5. Too many projects to judge

Fix: Design studios say their first decision rests on the opening slides of your portfolio, and that a few strong projects are enough. Lead the resume and the portfolio with the same shipped products, so the strongest work is what they see first.

08Format and template

One page with the portfolio link in the header. Lead each role with products shipped, units and the manufacturing method, then give tooling, CMF and testing results as text rather than inside images, since screening software reads only text. Keep CAD and rendering tools in the sidebar and the bullets where you used them. This example uses Orange Creative. The same content works in Standard, Pink Accent and Red & Gray Modern.

09Questions industrial designers ask

What degree do industrial designers need?

Usually a bachelor's. BLS says industrial designers typically need one, in fields such as industrial design, fine arts, engineering or architecture, and should build an electronic portfolio of design projects. O*NET's respondents mostly agreed: 68 percent said a new hire needs a bachelor's degree, 12 percent an associate degree and 15 percent some college. On a resume, put the degree first at entry level and the portfolio link in the header.

How much do industrial designers make?

The May 2025 median for industrial designers was $83,910, with the lowest tenth under $53,460 and the highest tenth over $139,770. By industry, management of companies paid a median $101,570, architectural and engineering services $97,730, specialized design services $90,360, wholesale trade $81,740 and manufacturing $79,920. Manufacturing employs the largest share, at 33 percent of the occupation.

What software should an industrial designer know?

CAD, rendering and Adobe tools. O*NET's count of 2025 postings for the occupation names Figma in 15 percent, SolidWorks in 14, Illustrator in 10 and Photoshop in 9. Rhino, KeyShot and Alias do not appear in that count, but hardware postings and design recruiters read for this page ask for them. List each in the sidebar and in the bullet where you used it.

Is an industrial designer the same as a product designer?

Sometimes. O*NET lists product designer among the reported titles for commercial and industrial designers, who design manufactured products such as appliances and toys. Many software companies use product designer for digital interfaces instead. If your work is physical, say so in your headline with the category and the manufacturing methods, so a reviewer cannot mistake you for a screen designer.

What should an industrial design portfolio include?

A few shipped or prototyped projects with their process. A hardware posting read for this page required a portfolio showing process, problem-solving and prototyping, and preferred a PDF. Recruiters look for loose sketches, evidence of design for manufacturing and CMF documentation beside the final renders. Studios say their first decision rests on the opening slides, so lead with your strongest shipped product.
