What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

Quota and account mix up top

A $3.4M quota across distributor partners and direct projects. Selling through distributors and selling direct are different skills, and naming both tells the reader this rep can do either.

  2. 2

First of 12, with the number

One hundred and seventeen percent of quota and first on a 12-person team. A stack rank with the team size is the claim a hiring manager believes, because they can check it with a reference.

  3. 3

    Quote follow-up as a habit

Every quote called within 48 hours, and close rate up from 29% to 38%. Most inside desks let quotes sit, and a rule with a result shows where the extra revenue came from.

  4. 4

    Distributors trained to sell

Fourteen distributor salespeople trained, and their quoted volume rose from $1.1M to $1.9M. Selling through a channel means making other people better at your product, and this bullet shows it worked.

  5. 5

Furniture years kept to one line

Seven hundred and eighty thousand dollars closed against a $700,000 quota. The earlier job keeps the one result that proves quota was beaten before this company, and drops everything else to save space.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Education sits above the jobs, and the headline names the lead sources. Bullets cover response time, quotes with a close rate, quota with stack rank and an outbound cadence with booked reviews. The customer service job stays because it turned service calls into sales.

Typical titles: Inside sales representative, Sales development representative, Inside sales associate

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

Ownership moves to the front: the quota, the distributor partners and the project size, then attainment with a stack rank. Quote follow-up, distributor training and forecast accuracy each get a bullet. The furniture dealer years shrink to one line of quota and result.

Typical titles: Senior inside sales representative, Inside account executive, Inside sales specialist

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces activity: the team and its quota, revenue growth, the share of reps above target, ramp time cut, a coverage model for mid-size accounts and the metrics used in coaching. The rep years fold to one line of quota record and rank.

Typical titles: Inside sales manager, Inside sales team lead, Director of inside sales

04Summary

Weak

Motivated inside sales professional with excellent phone skills and a proven track record of exceeding targets and building strong customer relationships.

Strong

Senior inside sales representative with five years in manufacturing sales, carrying a $3.4M quota across 45 distributor partners and direct warehouse projects. Finished 2025 at 117% of quota, first of 12 inside reps.

The quota, the account mix, the attainment and the rank on a named team size. A sales manager can see the size of the number this rep carried and how they compared with peers in one read. The weak version claims to exceed targets without saying which target or by how much.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Made outbound calls and followed up on leads and quotes to generate new business and meet monthly sales goals.

Strong

  • Increased quote-to-close from 29% to 38% by calling every quote within 48 hours and adding a site-video review.

A conversion rate before and after, and the two habits that moved it. An interviewer can ask what happened on the site-video calls and how many quotes a week that covered. The weak bullet restates the job description, names no product or buyer, and gives no number a manager could compare with their own desk.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Quota percentage with no target or rank

Fix: One hundred and twenty percent of what? Give the dollar quota, the attainment and where you ranked on a team of stated size. Recruiters check these with references, so a specific number you can defend beats a large one you cannot.

  2. Call counts presented as results

Fix: Sixty calls a day is effort, not outcome. Keep one activity number if your manager tracked it, then show what the calls produced: meetings or site reviews booked, quotes sent, close rate and revenue.

  3. No mention of how fast you answered

Fix: Inside sales often wins on speed. If you cut lead response time or quote turnaround, put it on the page with the before and after. Sales managers at manufacturers and distributors watch these numbers daily.

  4. Order-taking described as selling

Fix: Processing orders and answering inquiries is customer service. Many inside desks spend most of their time there, which is why proactive selling stands out. Show outbound work, quotes you chased and accounts you grew.

  5. The same resume for software and manufacturing roles

Fix: Software inside sales is measured on meetings and new logos, manufacturing on quotes, close rate and project value. Rewrite the top bullets for the posting's world, and name the products and buyers you sold to.

08Format and template

Reverse-chronological order, standard section headings, and every number written as text. Put the quota, team size or lead sources in the headline. Keep attainment, rank and team size together in one bullet so a recruiter can check them in one place, and a reference can confirm them. This example uses Blue Professional. The same content works in Standard, Executive Classic and Beige Two-Column.

09Questions inside sales representatives ask

What numbers belong on an inside sales resume?

Quota in dollars, attainment as a percentage, and your rank on a team of stated size come first. Then the numbers that explain them: leads worked a week, response time, quotes sent, close rate, average deal or project size and new accounts won. Activity counts such as calls a day belong on the page only when they sit next to what they produced, such as booked meetings or quotes.

How do I show quota attainment if I missed quota?

Give the context and the rank. If the whole team missed, say what share of the team hit target and where you ranked. If you missed in one year but beat it in the next, show both. Pair the number with a result you controlled, such as a close-rate increase or a cut in response time. Recruiters ask about quota anyway, so an honest number with context reads better than silence.

Is an inside sales certification worth getting?

It can help early in a career, but it rarely decides a hire. The American Association of Inside Sales Professionals offers a Certified Inside Sales Professional program built around prospecting, presenting and closing. BLS notes that certification is not required for these sales representatives, though some choose to earn it. Most sales managers weigh your quota record and stack rank far more heavily than any certificate, so put results first.

How is inside sales different from a sales development role?

A sales development representative usually books meetings for someone else to close, so the resume centers on meetings set, connect rate and pipeline created. An inside sales representative usually carries a revenue quota and closes deals by phone and video. If you have done both, show the quota you carried and the meetings you booked in separate bullets so a recruiter can tell them apart.

How do I move from inside sales to outside sales?

Show that you can own accounts, not just transactions. Bullets about a book of accounts you grew, projects you managed from quote to delivery, and distributor or partner relationships you built all point that way. Add any site visits, trade shows or video site reviews you ran. Keep your quota record and stack rank prominent, since outside roles carry larger quotas and the hiring manager will want proof you can scale.

Should I list my sales tools on an inside sales resume?

Yes, in a bullet and on the skills line. Inside sales depends on the CRM and the cadence tool, and postings name them, most often Salesforce alongside an engagement platform such as Salesloft. Show what you did with them: a cadence that booked meetings, a pipeline forecast built in the CRM, dashboards you used to manage your day. A tool named in a result counts for more than a list.
