Social worker resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three child welfare social worker resumes at caseworker, child protection and supervisor level, rendered in a real template and annotated line by line. What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Assessments and on-call in view

Child protection social worker, LMSW, 140 assessments a year, on-call. Child protection postings ask for investigations, after-hours emergency coverage and court work, so the headline answers all three.

  2. 2

    Court work counted

Testimony in 38 removal and permanency hearings and every court report on time. Providing testimony on custody is a listed task for the occupation, and the count shows the experience a supervisor needs.

  3. 3

    The license above experience

Licensed Master Social Worker with the state board and the dates. Postings at this level require licensure or set a deadline to obtain it, so the credential sits where a screener looks first.

  4. 4

    Response time as a rate

One hundred forty assessments a year with 96% of first contacts inside the 24-hour window. Response time is the first measure of a protective services unit, and a rate shows it across a full caseload.

  5. 5

    Children kept safely at home

Safety plans with 62 families and 81% of children at home through closure. It shows judgment about when a child can stay, which is the hardest call in child protection.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The BSW and the bachelor-level license come first, then the first in-home caseload in four counted bullets: families and children with visit compliance, structured reassessments entered on time, referrals with their completion rate, and court reports filed early. The county field placement keeps one line with its hours.

Typical titles: Family services caseworker, Child welfare caseworker, Social worker I

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The default view. A child protection caseload in the units a supervisor reviews: assessments a year with the response-time rate, safety plans with children kept home, court testimony and reports, joint investigations, and on-call weeks with emergency placements. The in-home caseload keeps one line, and the MSW sits beneath.

Typical titles: Child protection social worker, CPS investigator, Social worker II

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces the caseload: seven caseworkers and 160 children with no overdue court report, visit compliance raised with a method, permanency outcomes by type, turnover cut by mentoring, and kinship homes licensed. Child protection keeps one line with its assessments and hearings, the first caseload one.

Typical titles: Child welfare supervisor, Social work supervisor, Child protection supervisor

04Summary

Weak

Compassionate and dedicated social worker with a passion for helping children and families, strong communication skills and experience in case management and advocacy.

Strong

Child protection social worker with six years in child welfare, the last four completing abuse and neglect assessments for a county agency: 140 assessments a year, 96% of first contacts inside the 24-hour window, 38 hearings testified.

A child welfare supervisor reads the program, the workload and the court experience before anything else. The strong version gives all three with a response-time rate they can compare with their own unit. The weak version could open any social work resume.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for investigating reports of child abuse and neglect and working with families to keep children safe.

Strong

  • Built safety plans with 62 families in 2025 that kept 81% of children at home through case closure.

Developing service plans with families and following up on them is a core task for the occupation, and the hardest call in child protection is whether a child can stay home. The strong bullet gives the number of families, the method and the share of children who stayed safely at home. A supervisor can check it against case closure data, and the weak bullet repeats the job posting.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Acronyms a screener has to decode

Fix: A state social work association's resume reviewer says they often have to look up the acronyms on members' resumes. Write structured decision making, termination of parental rights and the license name in full at least once, then use the short form if you need it.

  2. Duties where outcomes should be

Fix: The same reviewer calls five years in a role with no accomplishment a red flag, and asks for numbers. Count what changed for families: visits completed, children kept safely at home, permanency reached, referrals completed. Duties alone read like the posting.

  3. A caseload with no program attached

Fix: Postings split this work into investigations, ongoing in-home services, foster care licensing and school roles, each with different demands. Name the program, the caseload size, the ages served and whether you worked after hours.

  4. The license left vague

Fix: All states license clinical social workers, and senior postings require a master's-level or clinical license, while some entry postings set a deadline to obtain one. Write the license level in full, the state and the dates. Never list a license you are still waiting on as held.

  5. Field placement written as coursework

Fix: For a new graduate the placement is the only social work experience on the page. Write it as a role: the agency, the program, the hours and what you did, counted, such as assessments observed and safety plans co-written.

08Format and template

Executive Classic keeps plain headings and puts the license block high, so a county or state screener checks the credential before reading the caseload. This example uses Executive Classic. The same content moves into Standard, Warm Classic or Blue Professional. Whichever you choose, keep the license level in the headline, spell out every acronym once, use counts and rates rather than client details, and give every role its dates in months.

09Questions social workers ask

Do I need an MSW to work in child welfare?

Not to start. The handbook lists a bachelor's or master's degree in social work as the entry education, and O*NET's respondents split 69 percent bachelor's and 26 percent master's for new hires. Caseworker postings take a BSW or a related bachelor's, sometimes with a year of human services experience. Supervisor postings ask for an MSW and a clinical-level license. The entry example starts with a BSW, and the mid example earns its MSW while working.

Which license should go on a social work resume?

The one you hold, written in full with the state and the dates. The handbook says all states license clinical social workers and some also license nonclinical ones. CareerOneStop lists the Association of Social Work Boards exams at bachelors, masters, advanced generalist and clinical levels, which most state licenses build on. Put the license in its own block near the top, as all three examples do, and never list a license as held before it is issued.

How much do child welfare social workers make?

The May 2025 median for child, family and school social workers was $59,550, against $61,780 for all social workers. Setting moves the number for social work overall: hospitals paid a median $77,440, educational services $68,850, state and local government $65,100 and individual and family services $51,980. Name your employer type in the headline, because a county agency and a private foster care agency read the same title differently.

How do I describe cases without breaking confidentiality?

Use counts and rates, never names, initials or case details. Maintaining case records and preparing reports is the occupation's top-rated task, so you already track the numbers that belong on a resume: families on the caseload, assessments completed, visits made, reports filed on time, children reunified or adopted. The examples use only totals and percentages, and nothing in them could identify a family.

Can I move from child welfare into school social work?

Yes, and O*NET counts both as one occupation. School postings usually ask for an MSW and a state school social work endorsement or certification, and the National Association of Social Workers offers a school social work specialist credential after post-MSW experience in schools. Move your strongest school-facing work to the top: attendance, behavior and family engagement with teachers, with counts.
