Plumber resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three plumber resumes at apprentice, journeyman and master level, rendered in a real template and taken apart line by line. Every one opens with the license tier and the state, because in this trade that is the line that decides the callback.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Journeyman, state, average ticket

The tier, the state and the ticket in one sentence. Average ticket is the number a service manager runs their whole board on, so quoting it places this plumber on that board immediately.

  2. 2

Backflow listed as its own license

Backflow certification comes from the state environmental agency rather than the plumbing board, and on the jobs that need it, it gates the hire ahead of the journeyman card. It gets its own dated line.

  3. 3

    Revenue with the call rate

Two hundred and eighty-four thousand billed, at six to nine calls a day and a six-hundred-dollar ticket. All three together let a manager work out whether this plumber fills a truck, without asking.

  4. 4

    A quality number beside volume

A callback rate over more than a thousand tickets is the one figure that separates a fast plumber from a good one. Volume without it invites the question every service manager asks second.

  5. 5

    Backflow tested, not just held

Two hundred and forty assemblies tested on commercial accounts. The certification alone says eligible. The count says the work was actually run, which is what a commercial account manager checks for.

  6. 6

    Construction years in one line

Units, fixtures and inspections passed first time. It proves the same person can rough in a building, and first-time inspection pass is the quality figure that side of the trade actually keeps.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Licenses sit above the jobs at every level on this page, and at apprentice level the hours come first. The two roles are deliberately different segments, so a reader can see both service and new construction, and each is counted in that segment's own unit: calls on one side, fixtures on the other.

Typical titles: Plumber's apprentice, Drain technician, Tradesman plumber

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The license tier and the state open the page, then the service numbers carry it: revenue, ticket, calls a day, and a callback rate over a big enough sample to believe. The construction years compress to a single line that keeps fixtures and first-time inspection passes, because that is the other hiring pool's currency.

Typical titles: Journeyman plumber, Service plumber, Backflow specialist

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope becomes the shop: trucks, revenue, permits, apprentices moved to their own licenses. The commercial foreman years stay as one line because medical gas under a nitrogen purge is the ceiling claim, and the earliest service job keeps a single call count so eleven years still fit one sheet.

Typical titles: Master plumber, Plumbing foreman, Service manager

04Summary

Weak

Hardworking plumber with years of experience in residential and commercial plumbing, known for reliability and quality workmanship.

Strong

Texas journeyman plumber with 9,600 logged hours, running residential service out of a one-ton truck at a $612 average ticket. Backflow assembly tester certified, with a 3.1% callback rate over two years.

Tier, state, hours, ticket and a quality number. A service manager can price this plumber against their own board in one read. The weak version never says which license is held or in which state, which is the first question anyone in the trade asks and the reason most plumber resumes get set aside.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for installing and repairing plumbing systems in residential and commercial buildings according to code.

Strong

  • Maintained a 3.1% callback rate across 1,180 completed tickets over 2 years.

A quality rate over a sample big enough to mean something, with the period it covers attached. Callbacks are what a service manager remembers about a plumber, so putting the number on the page answers the question before anyone has to ask it. The weak bullet is the occupation definition with according to code bolted on the end, and every plumber who has ever applied for anything could have written it.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Writing plumber with no tier and no state

Fix: Every posting names the license it wants and the state that issued it. Put the tier, the state, the number and the expiry in a block near the top, and list a second-state or reciprocal license on its own line.

  2. Blurring service and new construction into one job

Fix: They are different hiring pools with different units. Label each role service, new construction or commercial, then use that side's currency: tickets and callbacks on one, fixtures and inspections on the other.

  3. Volume with no quality figure beside it

Fix: Calls run and units piped say how fast. A callback rate, a first-time inspection pass rate or a first-visit fix rate says how well. Give both, and say over how many jobs and how long.

  4. Leaving selling off a service resume

Fix: Service shops publish conversion and agreement targets inside the job description and expect the plumber to quote, close and collect. Estimate-to-close performance and average ticket belong on the page like any other skill.

  5. Claiming code knowledge without locating it

Fix: Knowledge of plumbing codes is unverifiable. Name the code and edition you work to, the authority that inspects you, and your inspection record. Specialty work should name its own standard instead.

08Format and template

Plain headings, no photo, and the license block above the work. A service manager reads for tier, state and expiry before anything else, so those go where the eye lands first. This example uses Standard. The same content works in Executive Classic, Blue Professional and Brown Sidebar. Keep driving-record and on-call availability on the page as well, because both are insurer and scheduling gates that decide whether an otherwise strong application goes forward.

09Questions plumbers ask

I have hours but have not sat for journeyman yet. Apprentice or hours?

Both, in that order. Write the tier you actually hold, then the hours logged and the date you registered, because in most states no hour counts toward a license until the registration is on file. A shop reading six thousand hours and a registration date can work out exactly how far you are from the exam, which is what they are trying to establish. Claiming a tier you have not earned is the one thing that will end an application outright.

I am licensed in one state and moving to another. Does my card carry?

Partly, and never automatically. Licensing here is state and sometimes city level, with hundreds of separate licenses across the country, so the new board decides. Several states waive the training-hours requirement for an out-of-state journeyman or master but still require their own exam. Write your current license with its issuing state, then a line saying you are sitting the new state's exam and by when. That reads as a plan rather than a gap.

All my time is new construction. How do I get a service shop to call?

Translate the work into service units and be honest about the rest. Rough-in, top-out and trim across a named number of units and fixtures shows volume and code discipline, which service shops respect. Then name the parts that carry over: diagnostics, water heaters, repipes, customer contact. Service postings usually want verifiable years in a service operation, so apply where a shop trains, and say plainly that you want to move from production into service.

Should I put revenue on a plumber's resume?

Yes on a service resume, because the shop already runs on those numbers. Average ticket, billed revenue and service-agreement conversion appear inside the job descriptions themselves, so quoting them is speaking the employer's language rather than boasting. Pair every revenue figure with a quality figure, though, because a high ticket with a high callback rate is a problem rather than an achievement, and a service manager will read the two together.

Do I need a license to work as a plumber?

In most states, yes, and it is the defining fact of this trade. Most states and some cities license plumbers, typically after two to five years of experience and an exam, and the ladder usually runs apprentice, then a limited or tradesman tier, then journeyman, then master. Backflow testing and medical gas are separate endorsements issued by separate bodies. Because the rules are local, the resume has to name the issuing board rather than say licensed.

Is it worth listing backflow and medical gas certifications?

Yes, on their own dated lines. Both are gates rather than nice extras: a backflow job will not consider anyone without the tester certification, and medical gas work is governed by its own standard and requires the endorsement. They are invisible on jobs that do not need them and decisive on the ones that do, so listing them costs nothing. Include the issuing body, since backflow certification usually comes from a state environmental or health agency rather than the plumbing board.
