What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

Enrollment and staff in the headline

Seven hundred and forty students and 52 teachers, next to the license. A district hiring for a 400-student elementary and one hiring for a 2,000-student high school are not hiring the same principal, and the headline settles it.

  2. 2

    Budget stated as a figure

A $6.4M operating budget in the opening lines. Principals are accountable for money as well as instruction, and a resume that never mentions a budget reads as someone who has not yet held one.

  3. 3

    State assessment with a baseline

Mathematics proficiency from 28% to 41% over three years, with the data cycle that moved it. The state report card is public, so this is the one claim a search committee can verify before the first interview.

  4. 4

    Retention tied to a decision

Retention above 90% for three years, held by rebuilding the schedule around weekly planning time. Turnover is the problem superintendents are hiring against, and naming the lever is what separates this from a statistic.

  5. 5

    Hiring counted and rated

Twenty-seven teachers hired and the share rated above expectations moved from 44% to 66%. Anyone can report hiring volume. The evaluation outcome is what says the hires were good ones.

  6. 6

    Assistant principal years retained

Two lines with their own numbers rather than a title and a date range. The first administrative post is where a search committee looks for whether this principal was built or promoted, so it keeps its evidence.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Administration leads, then the teaching years that qualify it, then the preparation program with its hours. The headline carries the administrative license because it is screened before anything else. Every bullet holds an enrollment figure, an observation count, a referral count or an attendance percentage.

Typical titles: Assistant principal, Dean of students, Administrative intern

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline adds enrollment, staff and the license. The principalship opens with students, teachers and budget, then the assessment, retention, attendance and hiring outcomes, each with a baseline and the lever that moved it. The assistant principal years keep two numbered lines.

Typical titles: Principal, Middle school principal, Elementary principal

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces the building: students, teachers, assistant principals, budget, graduation rate, seats opened, vacancies filled. Each bullet pairs the number with the program or partnership behind it. The middle school years keep one line, the first post keeps its dates, and the specialist degree closes the page.

Typical titles: Executive principal, High school principal, Director of schools

04Summary

Weak

Visionary and collaborative school leader dedicated to building a positive culture where every student and staff member feels supported and empowered to achieve their best.

Strong

Middle school principal with five years in administration, running a 740-student campus with 52 teachers and a $6.4M budget. Raised TNReady mathematics proficiency from 28% to 41% while holding teacher retention above 90% for three years.

Enrollment, staff, budget and two outcomes a district already publishes. A search committee can open the state report card and check the first one before it calls. The weak version would open any school leader's resume in any state and gives a committee nothing to ask about.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Provided instructional leadership and fostered a collaborative culture focused on continuous improvement and high expectations for all students.

Strong

  • Held teacher retention above 90% for three years by rebuilding the master schedule around 240 minutes of weekly planning.

A retention rate, the period it held for, and the scheduling decision that produced it. An interviewer can ask what came out of the schedule to make the room, who objected and what it cost elsewhere. The weak bullet is the posting's own language handed straight back, and it would sit unchanged on any principal's resume in the country.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. No enrollment, staff count or budget anywhere

Fix: A principalship is sized by the building. Give enrollment, teaching staff, support staff and the operating budget for every post. A committee hiring for a 1,940-student high school cannot tell from a resume that only says principal whether you have run anything close.

  2. The administrator license written as a teaching license

Fix: Most states license principals separately, often in tiers, and a district screens on the administrative one. Name it with its tier, the issuing state agency and the expiry, and keep the teaching license below it rather than in its place.

  3. Leadership described in adjectives

Fix: Visionary, collaborative and student-centered appear on every principal resume and separate nothing. Write the decision and what followed: the schedule rebuilt, the retention rate held, the credit-recovery program and the graduation rate it moved.

  4. Classroom years cut out entirely

Fix: Principal postings set a teaching minimum, usually several years, and a committee has to find it. Keep one line for the teaching record with the subject, the grade and the load, and add any department or grade-level leadership you held then.

  5. Only assessment scores, nothing operational

Fix: Proficiency matters, but so does whether the building ran. Add the operational evidence a superintendent worries about: vacancies filled before the first day, attendance moved, testing administered without an irregularity, a budget closed inside its line items.

08Format and template

Single column, standard headings, no photo. District search committees read the administrative license, the enrollment and the outcomes in that order, and a two-column layout with icons scatters all three. This example uses Green Academic, which carries a credential line under the name and a dated certifications block. The same content works in Standard, Warm Classic and Executive Classic, all single column.

09Questions principals ask

What belongs in the header of a principal resume?

The administrative license, its tier and the grade band, then the location. Most states license school administrators separately from teachers and often in levels, and a district screens on that credential before it reads anything else. Put the teaching license in the certifications block below rather than in the header. If your license is the aspiring or provisional tier, say so plainly with the program you are completing and the date it converts.

How do I show the size of a school I led?

Give four numbers for every post: enrollment, teaching staff, support staff and the operating budget. Add the assistant principals if you led any, because leading administrators is a different job from leading teachers. A committee hiring for a comprehensive high school is reading to find out whether you have run an operation of that scale, and a title alone never answers it.

Which results should a principal put on a resume?

The ones already published about your school. State assessment proficiency, graduation and credit recovery, chronic absenteeism, discipline referrals, teacher retention and evaluation distributions, and access figures such as dual-enrollment or Advanced Placement seats. Give each a baseline, an endpoint and a period, and name the program or decision that moved it. A gain with no lever beside it reads as weather rather than leadership.

How much of my teaching career should stay on the page?

One line, unless you are applying for your first administrative post. Principal postings set a minimum number of classroom years, so a committee has to be able to find yours, but the detail of a teaching career stops earning its space once you have run a building. Keep the subject, the grade band, the load and any department or grade-level leadership, then give the room to the administrative record.

How do I move from assistant principal to principal?

Show that you already owned a share of the building. Name what you were responsible for rather than what the role is called: discipline and attendance for the whole school, the observation load, testing administration, the master schedule, a grade level. Then give the outcome for each. Districts promote assistant principals who can point at a number that moved while it was theirs, and the license tier you hold decides which postings you are eligible for.

How long should a principal resume be?

One page is enough through about ten years, which the executive example holds by cutting the earlier posts to a line each. Two pages are reasonable for a candidate with several buildings and a district role, and district applications ask for references, transcripts and the license separately. When you cut, drop duty descriptions first and keep every enrollment figure, budget, rate and baseline.
