What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

Headline adds the grade and subject

Grade 4 math and science, grade-level chair and the certificate in one line tell a principal which vacancy this resume fits before the summary starts. Elementary teacher alone fits every posting in the district equally.

  2. 2

Summary carries state and district scores

Five years, a 4-teacher team, 92 students and a STAAR meets rate that moved from 44% to 61%. The state test is the number every Texas principal is measured on, so it belongs in the first two lines.

  3. 3

Class, team and data cycle owned

Two sections, the grade-level team, common assessments every three weeks and a shared unit plan. That is the mid-level claim: the classroom and the routine around it are this teacher's, not something attended.

  4. 4

    Growth measured against a baseline

MAP Growth projections met by 52% of students, then 68%, with the instructional block that changed named beside it. A gain without the starting point is a claim. With one, it is a result a data coach can confirm.

  5. 5

    Mentoring with a retention result

Two first-year teachers, both renewed and still on the team, is the only mentoring line a principal can verify. Districts lose a large share of new teachers early, so a mentor who keeps them is worth naming.

  6. 6

    Two credentials with expiry dates

The standard certificate with the reading exam and the ESL supplemental, each with issue and expiry. A principal checks the state database anyway, and a resume that already shows the dates saves the step and the doubt.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Education and the certificate block lead, then the first classroom, the aide job and the clinical teaching semester with its weeks and scores. The headline carries the certificate because screeners confirm it first. Every bullet holds a count, a percentage or an assessment name a campus data wall would show.

Typical titles: Elementary teacher, Classroom teacher, grade 3, First-year teacher

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline adds the grade, the subjects and the chair role. Each classroom opens with the sections and students owned, then the state and district measures, each with a baseline. The second grade years keep three lines with their own numbers, and the certificate block shows both credentials dated.

Typical titles: Fourth grade teacher, Grade-level chair, Classroom teacher, grades 3–5

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces the classroom: teachers led, students served, observations completed, attendance moved. Every bullet pairs a team result with the routine that produced it. The chair years keep one number, the first classroom keeps its dates, and the master's degree plus National Board Certification close the page on one sheet.

Typical titles: Multi-classroom leader, Instructional coach, Teacher leader, grades 3–5

04Summary

Weak

Passionate and dedicated elementary educator committed to fostering a love of learning in every child and creating a nurturing, inclusive classroom environment.

Strong

Fourth grade math and science teacher with five years in Texas public schools, the last three as grade-level chair for a 4-teacher team and 92 students. Took the team's STAAR math meets-grade-level rate from 44% to 61% in two years.

Grade, subjects, team size and the state test result with its baseline. A principal can check the STAAR number against the campus report before the interview. The weak version could open any teacher's resume in any state and gives a committee nothing to verify.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for planning and delivering engaging lessons, differentiating instruction and communicating with parents about student progress.

Strong

  • Increased second graders reading on grade level on mCLASS DIBELS from 10 to 19 of 22 by May, with daily guided reading groups.

A count, a baseline, the assessment it was measured on and the daily routine that moved it. An interviewer can ask what the groups looked like and how students were placed in them. The weak bullet is the job description every district posts and could sit on any elementary resume in the country unchanged.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. The certificate named only as a degree in education

Fix: A degree is not a license. Write the state, the certificate name and grade band, the supplementals and the expiry on the line under your name, exactly as the state database shows them, because the screener will check it there.

  2. A grade taught, but no class size, subjects or student mix

Fix: Postings describe the vacancy by grade, subject and program, so describe your room the same way: 22 students, self-contained, 6 English learners, 3 IEPs. The mix tells a principal what you have already managed.

  3. Growth claimed without a baseline or an assessment name

Fix: Improved reading scores could mean anything. Give the measure, the start and the end: 9 to 16 of 22 on grade level on mCLASS DIBELS, August to May. Campus data walls use those numbers and a principal can match yours to them.

  4. Student teaching squeezed into one line of the education entry

Fix: For a first-year candidate it is the only classroom evidence there is. Give it its own block with the grade, the subjects, the solo weeks, the student count and the evaluation scores, and put it above the aide or tutoring jobs.

  5. A soft-skills list where the tools should be

Fix: Patient, nurturing and passionate are on every teaching resume and no committee screens on them. Name the platforms and assessments the district runs: Seesaw, Google Classroom, i-Ready, MAP Growth, DIBELS. Then show each one inside a bullet.

08Format and template

Single column, standard headings, no photo, no text boxes. District application systems and the screeners behind them read the certificate line and the experience block in order, and a decorative two-column template with icons hides both. This example uses Green Academic, a single-column template with a credential line under the name and a dated certifications block. The same content works in Standard, Warm Classic and Beige Border. Keep the certificate line, the class details and the assessment names in every one of them.

09Questions elementary school teachers ask

Where do I put my teaching certificate on an elementary teacher resume?

On the line under your name, then again in a dated certifications block near the top. Write it the way your state database shows it: the state, the certificate name and grade band, any supplemental such as ESL or bilingual, and the expiry date. Districts screen on certification before anything else, and postings name the exact certificate they need. If you are finishing a program, write the certificate as pending with the exam dates, which is what most postings say they will accept.

How do I describe my class so a principal can picture it?

Give the grade, the subjects, whether the room was self-contained or departmentalized, the student count and the mix: English learners, students with IEPs, any program the campus runs. Then add one measured result with its baseline and the assessment it came from. A 22-student third grade with 6 English learners and a reading move from 9 to 16 on grade level says more than three lines about engaging lessons. Postings describe vacancies in exactly these terms.

What should a first-year teacher resume include with no classroom of my own?

Education first, then the certificate with its dates, then clinical teaching as a full block: grade, subjects, weeks of solo teaching, student count and the evaluation scores your cooperating teacher gave you. Add aide, tutoring or substitute work as experience with a student count per day. Districts hire most first-year teachers between March and June, so have the certificate exams passed or scheduled before the postings open, and list any pending exam by name and date.

Should I list STAAR, MAP or DIBELS results on my resume?

Yes, as class or team results with a baseline, never as individual student data. A state test meets rate that moved from 44% to 61%, or the share of students meeting MAP Growth projections from 52% to 68%, is what a principal is measured on and can confirm against the campus report. Name the assessment, the start, the end and the period. Leave out any number you could not explain in an interview, and never name a student.

How do I show leadership as a classroom teacher?

Write it as a line inside the teaching role with its scope and a result: grade-level chair for a 4-teacher team and 92 students, common assessments every 3 weeks, two first-year teachers mentored and both renewed. Postings for multi-classroom leaders and instructional coaches ask for three or four years of teaching and evidence that your students grew more than others did, so the numbers you already track are the case. National Board Certification adds a voluntary credential that many districts pay a stipend for.

How long should an elementary teacher resume be?

One page through about ten years, which the teacher-leader example holds by giving the earlier classrooms one line each. Application systems ask for transcripts, certificates and three recent letters of reference alongside it, so the resume does not need to carry everything. A second page is fair for a coach or department chair with several campuses to account for. When you cut, drop the oldest duties first and keep every count, percentage and assessment name.
