High school teacher resume examples & writing guide for 2026

Three high school teacher resumes at first-year, experienced and department-chair level, each rendered in the template the page names and taken apart note by note. Every one leads with the state certificate, the subject taught, the student load and one end-of-course number.

What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Headline names the course load

AP Biology, grade 9 biology, the team role and the certificate field in one line. A department chair with an AP vacancy knows in a second whether to keep reading, which science teacher alone never tells them.

  2. 2

    Team and campus scope first

Five years, six teachers, 610 students and a campus end-of-course rate that moved from 49% to 67%. The state test result is what the principal is measured on, so it belongs in the opening lines.

  3. 3

    Advanced Placement roster growth

Twenty-four students to sixty-one in three years, with the share scoring 3 or higher moving from 38% to 59%. Access and results together answer the question an AP posting is really asking.

  4. 4

    Team routine named, not adjectives

Four-week common assessments and a shared reteach block for students under 70%. That is the mid-level claim: the routine belongs to this teacher rather than being something the campus ran around them.

  5. 5

    Earlier classroom keeps its numbers

Course failures from 27 to 9, absences from 11% to 6%, and one unit adopted by four teachers. Two years of physical science stay on the page because each line carries a result rather than a duty.

  6. 6

    Endorsement dated beside the certificate

The professional certificate with its field and the gifted endorsement, each dated. Georgia districts verify both in the state database, and a resume that already shows the dates removes a phone call.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Education and the dated certificate lead, then the first classroom, the tutoring job and the student teaching semester with its weeks and scores. The headline carries the certificate field because districts screen on it. Every bullet holds a section count, a student count or an end-of-course percentage.

Typical titles: Biology teacher, Science teacher, grade 9, First-year secondary teacher

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline adds the courses and the team role. Each classroom opens with sections and students owned, then the end-of-course and Advanced Placement measures with their baselines. The earlier school keeps three lines with their own numbers, and the certificate block shows both credentials dated.

Typical titles: AP Biology teacher, Science PLC lead, Lead teacher, science

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces the classroom: teachers led, sections covered, observations completed, budget owned, Advanced Placement enrollment moved. One AP section stays to show the chair still teaches. The earlier campus keeps one result, the first job keeps its dates, and the master's degree closes the page on one sheet.

Typical titles: Science department chair, Instructional coach, science, Lead teacher, grades 9–12

04Summary

Weak

Dedicated secondary educator with a passion for inspiring young minds and creating an engaging classroom where every student can reach their full potential.

Strong

Biology teacher with five years in Georgia public high schools, the last three leading a 6-teacher science team across 610 students. Took the campus Biology end-of-course proficient-or-above rate from 49% to 67% in two years.

Subject, years, team size and a state end-of-course result with its baseline. A principal can pull the campus report before the interview and check it. The weak version would open any teacher's resume in any subject and gives a hiring panel nothing to ask about.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for teaching biology to high school students, creating lesson plans, grading assignments and maintaining a positive learning environment.

Strong

  • Moved AP Biology scores of 3 or higher from 38% to 59% of examinees in two years, with 14 Saturday review sessions a year.

An exam, a baseline, an endpoint and the routine that moved it. An interviewer can ask who came to those sessions and how the roster changed. The weak bullet is the duty list every district posts and would sit unchanged on any secondary resume in the country.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. The content field left off the certificate line

Fix: A secondary posting names one field, so name yours. Write the state, the certificate level and the field with its grade band, then the expiry. A resume that says certified teacher makes a screener open the state database to find out in what.

  2. A subject named, but no sections or student count

Fix: High school loads are described in sections. Give yours: 5 sections of grade 9 biology, 142 students, 31 on an IEP or a 504 plan. The count tells a principal what preparation load and what mix you have already carried.

  3. End-of-course and Advanced Placement results left off

Fix: Biology, algebra, American literature and US history all carry a state end-of-course exam, and the school already reports the rate. Give the measure, the start and the end. Add the share of AP examinees scoring 3 or higher if you teach one.

  4. Lab teaching described only as hands-on

Fix: Lab management is the part of a science job a paper screen cannot see, so count it: wet labs run in a year, the safety contract on file for every student, the supply budget you order against. A chair reading that knows the labs actually ran.

  5. Coaching and mentoring written without a result

Fix: Supported new teachers proves nothing. Write the scope and what followed: two induction-phase teachers mentored and both cleared the professional certificate, or 108 observations a year with seven of nine teachers up a rating.

08Format and template

Single column, standard headings, no photo, no text boxes. District systems and the chairs behind them read the certificate line and the experience block in order, and a two-column layout with icons can split the field from its grade band. This example uses Green Academic, which carries a credential line under the name and a dated certifications block. The same content works in Standard, Warm Classic and Beige Border.

09Questions high school teachers ask

How do I write my teaching certificate on a high school teacher resume?

On the line under your name and again in a dated certifications block near the top. Write the state, the certificate level and the field with its grade band, the way the state database shows it. Add any endorsement, such as gifted or ESOL, on the same line. Secondary postings name one content field, so a reader must be able to see yours without opening another window. If you are finishing a program, write the certificate as pending and give the exam dates.

How should I describe my teaching load so a principal can picture it?

In sections, then students, then the mix. Five sections of grade 9 biology, 142 students, 31 on an IEP or a 504 plan says more than three lines about engaging instruction. Add the preparations if you carry more than one course, because two preps and four preps are different jobs. Then give one measured result with its baseline. Postings describe secondary vacancies in exactly these terms, so a resume that matches them is easy to screen.

Should I put end-of-course or Advanced Placement scores on my resume?

Yes, as class or department results with a baseline, never as individual student data. A proficient-or-above rate that moved from 49% to 67%, or AP examinees scoring 3 or higher moving from 38% to 59%, is what a principal already reports and can confirm. Name the exam, the start, the end and the period. Leave off any number you could not explain in an interview, and never name a student.

What goes on a first-year high school teacher resume with no classroom yet?

Education first, then the certificate with its field and dates, then student teaching as its own block: grade, subject, weeks of solo teaching, students and sections, and your evaluation result. Add tutoring, coaching or paraprofessional work as experience with a count of students per day. Most districts hire between March and May, so have the content exam passed or scheduled before postings open and list any pending exam by name and date.

How do I show leadership without leaving the classroom?

Write it inside the teaching role with its scope and a result: lead of a 6-teacher science team, 4-week common assessments, two induction-phase teachers mentored and both retained. Department chair and instructional coach postings ask for several years of teaching and evidence that students in other people's rooms grew. National Board Certification adds a voluntary credential many districts pay a yearly stipend for.

How long should a high school teacher resume be?

One page through about ten years, which the department-chair example holds by cutting the earliest jobs to a line each. District applications ask for transcripts, the certificate and references separately, so the resume does not have to carry everything. A second page is fair for a chair or coach accounting for several campuses. When you cut, drop the oldest duties first and keep every section count, percentage and exam name.
