What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

A training role in the headline

Field training officer on a county 911 service. Agencies lose many new hires in the first year, so a crew member who already trains others is the kind of EMT they want to keep.

  2. 2

    Chart audits against a target

Ninety-eight percent protocol compliance against a 90% target. Chart audits are how a medical director checks care, so a steady score is the quality measure an EMS supervisor reads.

  3. 3

Call types on a 911 unit

About 2,100 calls a year, with cardiac arrests, strokes and trauma. Naming the call types tells a reader this EMT has worked high-acuity calls beside a paramedic.

  4. 4

    Trainees cleared on time

Fourteen new EMTs trained, and 12 cleared to work alone within 8 weeks. A pass rate with a time frame shows the training worked, which is what an operations chief needs.

  5. 5

    Chute time with a method

Night chute time from 2 minutes 10 seconds to 58 seconds. Getting the unit rolling is the part of response time a crew controls, and restaging the station is a fix anyone can copy.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

Education sits above the jobs, and the headline gives the certification, the state, the service type and the call count. Bullets cover calls by type, charting, driving and rig checks. Clinical rotations fold to one line with the ride time and patient assessments completed.

Typical titles: Emergency medical technician, EMT, EMT-Basic

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

The headline names the certification, the training role and the service. Bullets give 911 calls by type, new EMTs trained, chart audit scores and chute time. The private-service years fold to one line with annual calls and the trauma course earned.

Typical titles: Emergency medical technician, EMT field training officer, 911 EMT

  • Senior

    7+ years

Scope replaces call counts: the size of the shift, response-time compliance, crew injuries, hospital wall time and mass casualty drills. The field years fold to one line with annual calls, EMTs trained and the year the Advanced EMT certification was earned.

Typical titles: EMS operations supervisor, EMS field supervisor, EMS shift supervisor

04Summary

Weak

Compassionate and hardworking EMT who thrives under pressure and is dedicated to providing excellent emergency care to patients in need.

Strong

Emergency medical technician with six years in EMS, the last four on a county 911 service running about 2,100 calls a year. Trains new EMTs as a field training officer, and has held 98% protocol compliance on chart audits since 2024.

The service type, the years, the call volume, a training role and a quality score. A hiring supervisor can compare each with their own crews. The weak version promises calm and care without a service, a call count or a measure.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responded to emergency calls and provided basic life support and transport to patients.

Strong

  • Trained 14 new EMTs as a field training officer, and 12 cleared to work alone within 8 weeks.

A role, the number trained, the share who passed and a time frame. An operations chief can ask what the field training program covered, how progress was signed off and why 2 did not clear. The weak bullet describes what the certification already permits, with no service, no call count and no result, so every applicant in the pile could send it unchanged.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. No service type named

Fix: Interfacility transfers, 911 response, fire-based EMS and emergency department tech work are different jobs on one certification. Name your service type in the headline, because a 911 agency reads your calls differently from a transfer service.

  2. No call volume anywhere

Fix: An EMT's experience is measured in calls. Give calls a year or a shift, and split them by type where you can, such as transfers and 911, or the share of cardiac arrests, strokes and trauma, so a supervisor can judge what you have seen.

  3. Skills outside your certification

Fix: Advanced airway devices, IV fluids and most medications belong to advanced EMTs and paramedics. Listing them on an EMT resume raises questions about scope. Show what an EMT does well instead: assessments, charting, driving, lifting and trauma care.

  4. Certification and state left out

Fix: Every state requires a license where you work, and many postings also name the National Registry. Put both in your headline or certifications with dates, and add BLS and any trauma course, since postings screen on them before reading anything else.

  5. Driving record ignored

Fix: Postings ask for a clean driving record and sometimes a defensive driving course. If yours is clean, say so with miles or years driven and any emergency vehicle course, because you are being trusted with a heavy vehicle and a patient.

08Format and template

One column, reverse-chronological order and standard section headings, with every figure written as text. Put the National Registry certification, your state and service type in the headline. Give calls by type and the measures your agency tracks, such as chart audits or chute time. List each certification with its issuer and date. This example uses Green Academic. The same content works in Standard, Warm Classic and Beige Border.

09Questions emergency medical technicians ask

How should an EMT list certifications on a resume?

List the National Registry certification and your state license or certification separately, each with its issuer and date, then BLS and any trauma course such as PHTLS. The National Registry recertifies EMTs every two years, with 40 hours of continuing education or an exam, and active status requires affiliation with an EMS agency. Put the certification level in your headline so a supervisor sees it first.

What numbers should an EMT put on a resume?

Give calls a year or a shift and split them by type, such as transfers, 911 calls, cardiac arrests and trauma. Add chart audit scores, charts returned for correction, chute time and driving miles without a collision. Field training officers should give the number of new EMTs trained and how many cleared on time. Supervisors should add response-time compliance, wall time and crew injuries, always with a before and after.

How do I write an EMT resume with no experience?

Put your EMT program first, then clinical rotations with ride time, emergency department hours and the number of patient assessments. List your National Registry and state certification, BLS and a clean driving record. EMT career guides suggest starting in interfacility transport when 911 jobs ask for experience, so apply to both, and show any volunteer, lifeguard or patient care work with numbers.

Should I list interfacility transport experience on a 911 application?

Yes, with numbers. Interfacility calls still involve assessments, monitoring, lifting, driving and charting, and many transfer services also run 911 backup. Give the total calls and the share that were emergency responses, then name the call types you handled. A 911 agency can see from that split how much emergency work you have already done and how much field training you will need.

Which certifications help an EMT stand out?

The National Registry and state certification come first, with BLS. Trauma courses such as PHTLS, a defensive driving or emergency vehicle course, and incident command training appear in EMT postings as required or preferred. Many EMTs move to Advanced EMT or paramedic next. List each credential with its date, and name the certification level in your headline when it matches the posting.

How do I move from EMT to field training officer or supervisor?

Show the lead work you already do. Precepting new hires, keeping chart audit scores high, running rig checks and helping with drills all count. Give numbers for each. EMS trade press reports high turnover across the field and many new hires leaving in their first year, so a resume showing that the people you trained stayed and cleared on time reads as ready for a lead role.
