What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

Plant, scope and systems up front

Supply chain manager at a medical device plant, owning S&OP and inventory in SAP and Kinaxis. A recruiter sees the industry, the two jobs the role owns and the systems before reading the summary.

  2. 2

    Team and network sized

Six planners and buyers, eleven hundred fifty SKUs, two lines and a hundred forty suppliers. Recruiters say they screen for the size of the network a candidate managed, and this bullet answers before they ask.

  3. 3

    Inventory down, backorders down too

Inventory from 38.6 to 31.2 million dollars in eighteen months while backorders fell. Cutting stock alone is easy, and showing service improved at the same time is what makes the number believable to a plant leader.

  4. 4

    S&OP built, with adherence

A monthly plant S&OP with sales, finance and quality, and schedule adherence from eighty-one to ninety-three percent. Manager postings ask for someone who can run S&OP, and this shows it running with a result.

  5. 5

    Second sources after tariffs

Nine single-source parts given a second source after the 2025 tariff changes, with no line stoppages. Trade press through 2025 and 2026 tracked tariffs reshaping sourcing, and a second source is the plant-level answer a hiring manager can check.

  6. 6

    CPIM dated before the promotion

CPIM earned three months before the manager role began, beside a Green Belt from the plant's Lean program. Postings list APICS credentials as preferred, and the dates show the study that went with the step up.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The degree and the capstone lead, then two years of planning sized in SKUs and co-manufacturers. The bullets carry a fill rate with its safety stock method, forecast accuracy on a named category, excess inventory cleared in dollars and a dashboard the planning team uses. The co-op keeps one line.

Typical titles: Supply planner, Supply chain analyst, Inventory planner

  • Mid-level

    3–7 years

Ownership moves from SKUs to a plant: six planners and buyers, a hundred forty suppliers, inventory cut while backorders fell, a monthly S&OP built from nothing, write-offs cut and second sources secured after the tariff changes. The planner years keep one line.

Typical titles: Supply chain manager, Supply planning manager, Materials manager

  • Senior

    8+ years

Scope moves from one plant to four: OTIF to distributors, inventory as a share of revenue, an SAP IBP launch with forecast accuracy, second sources that cut landed cost, and managers grown from the team. The manager and planner years keep one line each.

Typical titles: Director of supply chain, Senior supply chain manager, Head of supply planning

04Summary

Weak

Results-driven supply chain professional with excellent communication skills and a proven track record of optimizing processes, managing vendors and reducing costs in fast-paced environments.

Strong

Supply chain manager with seven years in planning, leading 6 planners and buyers at a medical device plant. Owns plant S&OP, safety stock policy and 140 suppliers, and cut inventory from $38.6 million to $31.2 million while backorders fell.

The strong version gives the plant, the team, the supplier count and an inventory figure with service holding. Recruiters say labels like results-driven mean nothing without concrete examples, and the weak one is made of nothing else.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for managing inventory levels and supporting procurement activities across the plant.

Strong

  • Reduced plant inventory from $38.6 million to $31.2 million in 18 months while backorders fell from 112 lines to 35, by resetting safety stock by SKU segment.

Supply chain recruiters say describing what you did rather than what changed is the most common reason qualified candidates do not advance. The strong bullet gives the inventory before and after, the period, the service result and the lever pulled. The weak one repeats the job description word for word.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Duties listed where results belong

Fix: Supply chain recruiters call listing responsibilities instead of accomplishments the single biggest resume mistake they see. For each role, write what changed because of you: the inventory, service, cost or schedule number before and after, and the lever you pulled to move it.

  2. Scope left for the reader to guess

Fix: Recruiters screen for the size of the network managed, the spend owned and the systems implemented. Put the SKUs, suppliers, plants, inventory dollars and team size in the first bullet of each role, so the reader knows the job's weight before judging the results.

  3. A team size with nothing after it

Fix: One recruiting firm notes that managing a team of five tells a recruiter nothing about how well you managed. Follow the headcount with what the team delivered or how its people grew: planners promoted, turnover kept low, a process the team now runs without you.

  4. AI-polished summaries that all sound alike

Fix: Recruiters on a 2026 supply chain careers podcast say polished resumes leave hiring managers with five perfect candidates and nothing to tell them apart. Keep the summary to your network, your systems and a result only you can claim, and be ready to defend each number.

  5. Certifications placed above the experience

Fix: Postings list APICS and ISM credentials as preferred rather than required, and one recruiter notes that with twelve years of experience the experience does the work. Put CPIM or CSCP in certifications with the year earned, and let the bullets carry the page.

08Format and template

Standard headings, no photo and no graphics, with the headline naming the industry, the planning scope and the systems. Keep it to one page, and open each role with the scope bullet: SKUs, suppliers, plants, inventory and team. Put APICS or ISM credentials in certifications with the year earned. 09Questions supply chain managers ask

Do you need an MBA to be a supply chain manager?

Not for most manager roles. In O*NET's survey, 67 percent of supply chain managers say a bachelor's degree is required and 19 percent a master's, and current manager postings mostly ask for a bachelor's with the MBA as a preference. Recruiters say the MBA starts to matter at director level and above, where postings for senior planning leaders prefer or require a master's degree.

Is APICS CPIM or CSCP worth getting?

Usually, if your work is planning or inventory. CPIM covers planning and inventory in depth, and ASCM launched an updated version of the exam in June 2026. CSCP is broader and suits people moving toward end-to-end supply chain roles. Postings list both as preferred rather than required, so they help most early and mid-career, when experience alone does not yet separate you from other planners.

How do I move from supply planner to supply chain manager?

Take ownership of something before the title changes: a category's forecast, the safety stock policy, a supplier review or the monthly S&OP deck. The BLS lists 5 years or more of related work experience for the manager group, and manager postings ask for people who can lead planners and buyers. Put the process you owned, the metric it moved and anyone you trained on the resume.

Which planning systems should a supply chain manager list?

The ones you used, with the module. SAP is the system current postings name most often, followed by Oracle and NetSuite, then planning tools such as Blue Yonder, Kinaxis, o9 and SAP IBP. O*NET finds Excel in about a fifth of postings for the occupation, and SQL and Power BI are common asks at planner level. Name a system on the skills line only if a bullet shows you using it.

Which metrics belong on a supply chain manager resume?

The ones your leadership reviews: OTIF or on-time delivery, forecast accuracy and bias, inventory dollars or days of supply, excess and obsolete write-offs, backorders, schedule adherence and working capital released. Gartner's 2026 supply chain ranking replaced inventory turns with inventory as a percentage of revenue, a useful measure at director level. Pair each with its period and scale so a hiring manager can compare it.
