What makes this resume work

Each marker on the page has a note here. Press a marker to jump to its note.

  1. 1

    Two seats in one shift

Window and account desk, named together. The universal banker title means different things at different banks, so saying which two jobs the shift actually covers is worth more than the title itself.

  2. 2

    The goal and the result

A 20-lead monthly goal cleared at an average of 22. Naming the target next to the number tells a branch manager the quota existed and was met, which a bare count never does.

  3. 3

    A year of account openings

Two hundred and sixty-eight deposit accounts and 41 loan applications, dated to one year. The desk half of the job is measured in what was opened, so the count belongs beside the year it happened in.

  4. 4

    Window volume held alongside

Fifteen hundred and forty transactions a month while covering the desk 3 days a week. The worry about a universal banker is that one half of the job quietly stops. This answers it.

  5. 5

    Float years, not a footnote

Balancing standards held on 96% of 620 shifts across 3 branches. Floating is a separate sub-role with its own requirements, and the shift count makes the claim checkable.

  6. 6

    A certificate nobody required

The teller certificate is a course bundle, not an exam credential, and no posting asks for it. It reads here as initiative, which is the only thing it can honestly claim to be.

03The same resume at three levels

The tinted row is the level shown above.

  • Entry-level

    0–2 years

The headline gives the duration and the daily count before anything else. The grocery register stays because postings take cash handling experience of any kind. Every bullet on the teller role carries a count, a filing or a dollar figure, and no certifications section exists because no certification does.

Typical titles: Teller, Bank teller, Member services representative

  • Mid-level

    3–6 years

Both halves of the universal banker job are measured. The lead goal sits beside the result, the window volume is held while the desk is covered, and 41 currency transaction reports are counted rather than named. The float years show the same person balancing under three branch routines.

Typical titles: Universal banker, Relationship banker, Personal banker

  • Senior

    7+ years

Supervision is measured the way a branch measures it: the size of the line, the audit streak, outages per teller a month, turnover with the plan that moved it, and the vault and recyclers the title carries. The two earlier seats hold one line each, so nine years fit one page.

Typical titles: Head teller, Lead teller, Teller supervisor

04Summary

Weak

Detail-oriented banking professional with excellent customer service skills and a proven ability to handle cash accurately in a fast-paced branch environment.

Strong

Universal banker at a credit union, five years in branches after starting on the teller line. Runs a window and an account desk in the same shift, opened 268 accounts last year, and clears a 20-lead monthly goal at an average of 22.

Years in branches, both seats named, a year of account openings and the monthly goal against what was actually done. A branch manager can check every one of those against a scorecard the branch already runs. The weak version would sit unchanged on a retail resume.

05Bullets

Weak

  • Responsible for processing customer transactions accurately and providing excellent customer service while adhering to all bank policies and procedures.

Strong

  • Closed out a $6,000 drawer to the penny on 243 of 247 shifts and reported both outages that day.

The drawer limit, the shift count and the misses. A teller who writes 243 of 247 is telling a branch manager something an audit could confirm, and the two outages reported the same day say more about the person than a perfect record would, because nobody who works a window believes in a perfect record. The weak bullet describes the job rather than the person holding it, which means every applicant for the same opening could send it without changing a word.

07Mistakes to avoid

  1. Cash handling claimed with no duration

Fix: Postings ask for it in months and years, because that is how the requirement is written. Give the months on a window or a register, the drawer limit you carried, and the transactions a day behind it. Accurate with money, on its own, fails the first filter.

  2. Numbers no branch actually tracks

Fix: Excellent customer service is not a measure. The ones a branch already computes for you are transactions a day or a month, drawer variance, audit findings, referrals or leads a month, and how long you stayed. Use those and the reader can check them against their own reports.

  3. Compliance words used as decoration

Fix: BSA, CTR and Regulation CC appear in nearly every posting, so listing them proves nothing. Write what you did with each: the reports you filed, the threshold that triggered them, the holds you placed. A line about a filing beats the acronym on a skills row.

  4. A certificate written as a requirement

Fix: No employer requires the teller or universal banker certificates, and federal data lists no license for the occupation at all. Hold one and it reads as initiative, which is worth having. Present it as a qualification and it reads as a misunderstanding of the job.

  5. Schedule and mobility left off the page

Fix: Saturdays are standard, branches move people between sites, and float roles list reliable transportation as an actual requirement. Say which of those you can do. Candidates get screened out on availability for reasons that have nothing to do with their skills.

08Format and template

Single column, standard headings, no photo. A branch manager reads the cash-handling duration, the transaction count and what the drawer did before anything else, so all three belong above the fold, and a two-column layout can strand the duration away from the title it belongs to. This example uses Executive Classic, which gives a certificate a dated row without pretending it is a license. The same content works in Standard, Warm Classic and Maroon Elegant, all single column.

09Questions bank tellers ask

Do I need a certification to work as a bank teller?

No. Federal data lists no license, certification or registration for the occupation, and new tellers are trained on the job by a head teller or another experienced teller. Certificates exist from the bankers' associations, and they are course bundles rather than exams, so holding one says you paid for training before anyone asked you to. That is worth something as a differentiator and nothing as a qualification. The credentials that genuinely gate a career here are the ones at the banker desk, not at the window.

How do I show that my retail or restaurant experience counts?

Write it in the units a branch uses. Months on a register, the size of the till, the number of transactions in a shift, who counted the safe at close, and whether you were trusted with the deposit. Postings for the job commonly accept cash handling, sales or clerical experience in place of teller experience, which means the register years are not a gap to explain but the qualification itself. Name the reconciliation you did at close, because that is the same act as balancing a drawer.

What numbers belong on a bank teller resume?

The ones the branch already computes. Transactions a day or a month, the drawer limit you carried, how many shifts balanced and how many did not, currency transaction reports filed, referrals or leads a month and how many converted, and tenure at each branch. At head teller level the unit changes: the size of the line, audit findings, outages per teller a month and turnover. Leave out anything you cannot source to a report someone else ran.

Will a background or credit check keep me out?

It depends what is on it and which seat you are applying for. Banks run criminal background checks under federal banking rules and, for some roles, a credit check under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and a felony inside seven years is a hard bar for licensed banker roles. A thin file or old debt is not automatically disqualifying and varies by employer and by role. None of that belongs on the resume. Answer it when it is asked, in the interview, rather than volunteering it on the page.

How do I move from the teller line to personal banker or loan officer?

Change what you count. The window is measured in transactions and accuracy, the desk in accounts opened, products placed and referrals that converted, so a resume aiming at the desk leads with relationship outcomes and keeps the transaction volume as evidence of accuracy. Then deal with licensing, because that is the real wall: banker and relationship roles commonly require securities exams, a state insurance license and registration on the mortgage registry within a few months of hire. Time spent getting sponsored counts more than resume wording.

How long should a bank teller resume be?

One page, at every level on this page. The work compresses well because it is measured in counts: a current seat with five bullets, the previous one with two, and a line each for anything older. The head teller example here holds nine years and three employers on a single sheet by keeping only the scope and one number for each earlier role. A second page is not something this occupation ever needs.
